Michael Mitchell's version of the song "Land of the Silver Birch
This song takes me back to being a small child, learning to sing this at school.
It always conjured up great images for me as I also remember the BBC TV series "Last of the Mohicans" being shown around the same time.
It always made me want to visit Canada, so I did.
I do not own the music or pictures and while there are only a few from this site I have to mention a great website for Native American art:-
www.firstpeople.us/
I do not make any money or financial gain form this video.

Sang this in my Primary School called Fairway , in Uganda 🇺🇬 , East Africa, Africa. I am not Canadian but love the minor keys and soul ful tone of the song. Brings back precious memories of my Mum and childhood. She taught us the song. Big up to Canada 🇨🇦 for this lovely folk song.
@filthyfrancis945
@filthyfrancis945 Год назад
damn Esther you're here telling big facts about the soulful feel of the minor keys, most people wouldn't catch on. as an ethnic canadian, I'm glad that we get to share in these memories. Now if only someone aside from Paul Simon can release an afrobeat album that pays homage to African contributions to popular music, that would be great.

I remember singing this in my first primary school when I was about 5, 50 years ago in London, England. I have never really forgotten it [the chorus that is], just that this is the first time I've searched for the song on RU-vid. In fact, I searched for it after watching a video about a rescued baby beaver [named 'Justin Beaver'] building a dam out of household items on the Dodo channel. People commented that a beaver [called Justin Beaver], pulling Lacrosse sticks was about as Canadian as you could get. I notice that someone has commented below that this is more Canadian than 'Oh Canada'.

Yes this is as Canadian as the loon and beaver. Never forget all of you who know this song .Remember up north. trips in canoes and camping .Singing at the fire, in the canoe as you were paddling . These are Canadian memories that were sung . Bring it back to how it used to be. Bring back the innocence of youth and adventure.

Absolutely more Canadian than Oh Canada. All of a sudden I'm transported to the gym sitting in the bleachers singing with my classmates during one of our assemblies. I don't know if any of my friends ever got tired of it but whenever the music started I was singing this out loud, my heart so full. I loved this song! I'm sure they looked at me like what the heck is she doing! This song still rocks!!

My 4th grade teacher was a descendant of William Wallace, so she insisted that we learned all songs relevant to the history of our land; this was near the front of our songbook, including the start of "dip-dip and swing."

Wherever Michael Mitchell is today (well, happy and singing right along, I hope), I hope he knows that when I get to feeling kind-of low, I call up this very page on RU-vid and drink in the inspiration and power he broadcasts! It's like all the dreams of my youth in southern Oklahoma with all my hopes for my children and grandchildren - and ALL those of people of good will throughout the Americas and across the world! Thank you sir -- while many of us have likely heard or sung this song in past years, YOUR interpretation is, as far as I'm concerned, the ideal! Heart and soul healing and strengthening!

Perfect song to read the subjective forms of the clouds and to follow with a tender eye the grooves of the stems of the trees; appreciate the complex writing of the nested branches, taste the colors of the decomposition of light into water droplets in a garden, and strongly feel the wet soil of ancestral forest to perceive the traces of animals from deep past

Wonderful! Found this in a RU-vid playlist of Canadian folk songs, and it took me right back to watching "Men with Brooms." So glad I finally know what this song is called, since they never put it on the movie's soundtrack. On a side note: How much Canadian music has loons calling in the background? It's far from a complaint, because my wife and I both love hearing them, but it's just something we've noticed. I've heard them in this song, Akwa Tuta, and even the "TransFormers: Beast Wars" soundtrack!

Move as the wildcat strikes, cut thrust and swing" I got a B on it. :P

I remember learning this song in the 5th grade. Dad was stationed at Goose AFB in Canada, with the American contingent. I also learned how to paddle a canoe there. I long to return and paddle a canoe on her blue waters again.

Talk about a throwback to grade 3 or so. Remember singing this often. God that was years ago. Needed the nostalgia today. Cheers.

When I learned this, I had an Irish music teacher. So this is a little bit different that what I was taught. But I love it all the same and it still brings me back to the fourth grade.
