Land Rover Discovery 3/4 LR3/4 Gullwing Installation - A REAL DIY JOB
If you are planning on doing a gullwing installation your self, no matter the car brand, or just want to see how it's done, then this is the video for you!
In this part 3, of the Gullwing install series, I am doing the actual diy install with the help of my brother Christer. I will share with you all the details and issues that we encountered while doing the install and some tips and tricks that could help you in your install.
I have never installed a window before, and more so, never installed a gullwing, so this is really is a true DIY gullwing installation. Learning the process of window removal, window sealant and rivet nuts has been a fun experience and something I will get use for later in this Discovery overland build.
If you haven't seen part 1 and 2 then you can take a look at them afterwards. Links below.
The Gullwing Product was supplied by Out-Rack, free of charge, and this is the link to their website: www.out-rack.com/en/prodotto/...
More info about the gullwing at the bottom.
I want to thank the people over at Out-Rack for sending it to me and for letting me test it out in proper winter condition. In return I will give them feedback on the product on how it copes with the tough arctic winter conditions and the salty roads we have here.
Thank you for watching this one and I wish you best,
Simon Mastermo 👍😊

Out-Rack Gullwing Information
"
The Gullwing side panel for Discovery L319 from Out-Rack is the ultimate component for those who want to prepare their vehicle for Overlanding.
The kit forms the basis of an expandable and modular loading system, which allows space inside and outside the vehicle that would otherwise be unused to be utilised.
The Gullwing for Discovery L319 replaces the side glass of the third row and is installed either with screws, not visible when the operation is complete, or with normal window sealant.
The basic kit consists only of the panel that is installed in place of the glass. Made of stainless steel and powder-coated, it is manufactured using the best components on the market. In order to get the most out of the product, Out-Rack recommends installation by qualified personnel (body shops).
Practical gas dampers make it easy to open and close the door, and a pair of locks with a key allow the door to be securely closed. An automotive gasket prevents water from entering through the door opening, even under the most demanding conditions such as high-pressure washing.
Two aluminium ‘Airline’ rails firmly fixed to the panel offer the possibility of anchoring Out-Rack accessories or other objects outside the vehicle. They are supplied in natural aluminium as standard and are also available in black, powder-coated on request.
As a complement to the panel, there is also the specific internal cabinet equipped with panel springs and shelves.
NOTE:
The product is compatible with 5- or 7-seater vehicles.
Removing the right glass also removes one of the radio’s two FM antennas. From the tests run, this does not prevent good channel reception. For basic audio systems (6-button radio), however, the installation of an external FM antenna (not included) is recommended.
By removing the left glass, the TV antenna is removed. In this case, it was not possible for us to carry out tests ourselves.
Material: Stainless Steel
Finish: UV-resistant powder coating
Kit contents:
no. 1 gullwing side panel with door
nr. 2 “Airline” rails
hardware required for installation

Totally awesome gullwing not sure if I do this to my lr3 only because I have molle panel on inside window but I also bought a 2004 land rover discovery ll I'm building into a overlanding build because I always liked the discovery 2 platform soild axles front and rear very easy to work on and it has that look of let's go camping, the company you bought the gullwing from good company fast shipping I bought from them a few times next you want the terrafirma swing out spare tire carrier and a snorkel, front runner roof rack there's no end anyway nice gullwing

Hey James and reading this I’m thinking you got the LR-bug bad as I do. 😂😂 Thinking I will put up a molle panel on the other side and put my electrics on that sides D2 is awesome and I would love to get my hand on one with a TD5 and a manual. Great setup if you are doing some more hard core overlanding and off-road. 👍😊 I would love a swing away but I’m already hitting that wait limit if I put the whole family in the car. 😅 Next for me I think is to prioritize an awning with some sides. Rain and wind seems to be the biggest factors here in Norway while going overlanding. Best, Simon

Well done mate I agree drilling holes in your car is off putting at times but a necessary evil at times 🙄 cheers

So we’ll put, necessary evil. 😊 Glad I did it as I learned new skills and it turned out so well. Will have to put the skills to use soon as I need to cut and replace some, let’s say crispy, metal on the sills. 😅 Best, Simon

Hi Simon, I cheated and fast forwarded the drilling bits but so good to see it in place and the end product looks fantastic and worth the time and effort you put into the job. Always buy good drill bits as you said. I haven't seen the riv nuts with the hex sides on them I have only used the round ones which are easier to ensure they are central and aligned with your holes. I have a manual tool to insert them though not a posh air tool like you 😂😁great job and I look forward to seeing you serve your hot dogs and ice cream to Perry and Erik in the next adventure 😂
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
Hi Simon and no worries, it’s a long video. Was thinking of making a short version later. 😊 I have never used river nuts before so couldn’t tell if they were good or bad, but round ones would probably enter the hole more easily. Looked like the centering issues was inside the river nuts them selves. I have some round ones for the light bar so will get to check out the difference later. 👍 I will need to make a sketch with Perry and Erik 😊 Maybe English tea time. 😂

@@LandRoverDrive Hi Simon, it's correct the rounded riv nuts gives a easier installation but we chose the hex type because it's stronger and safer😉

@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
@@carminetarquinio4877 Thanks for the update! 👍Stronger and safer is always better. I found them to be okay to use, not too difficult, and I guess it all depends on how big of a hole you make. I was on the smaller/tighter end I think and adjusted as needed with the drill bit. 😊

I think if your awning was on that side it would be a great hatch for brew kit and snacks.
@LandRoverDrive

Yeah, a lunch stop snack hatch. 😊 A self held awning, small 180 or big 270 is on the top of my list at the moment of mods. 😅

Hi Simon, looked like a nervous time when drilling those holes in the disco. I think you need better quality HSS drills when working on the car as the steel used is high tensile. Looks great now that its fitted, when is the other side going in ?
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
Thank you Nick and you are so right. I initially used some generic brand HSS drills, which I shouldn't had, thought they would suffice, but I did switch over to a better set for the small holes after the struggle in the beginning. The big holes I only had a a generic brand one, but it was brand new so worked okay. But I need to get a full set of proper drill bits, the tools are half the job I've learned over the years. 😊 I'm not sure if the other side is going in, I have a plan of putting up a electrical power board on the other side, thinking I don't need access to both sides of that, but of course it would be nice. 👍 But it won't be prioritised now, so much other stuff I want to get done first, and something I need to get done this year. 😅 Simon

Hi Simon, It's looking good but it's so small. There seems to be room left, especially on the width. Why did they make it so narrow? It also looks like they could have gone a few centimeters lower and shape the gullwing door following the window angles. Anyway, nice job on the installation! Cheers!
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
Hey, I'm not really sure and hopefully they can come on here and give some answers around their design. Due to the form faktor, the bend to fit the discovery body, and the construction of the internals of the Discovery, there's almost nothing to go on in height. On the width, you could maybe expand it with one inch, but that's about it. I guess if you spent more money on engineering and design they could find a different solution but the gain would be very small in the end, my thoughts. 😊 And thank you, I'm happy with the result. 👍 Simon

Hm. At first, as commented on your last video, I felt really tempted to add one (or two) to my own MY08. But in hindsight I'm kind of glad I decided against it. At least againt this gullwing type in particular. Now having seen it mounted, the gullwing itself, the opening, is way too small. I really wonder why they made it that small. There's plenty of space around to make the opening bigger.
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
Yeah I remember, and I’m still not sure but can ask them. I would think maybe the strength of the panel and limiting the flexibility. Maybe are some mathematical numbers here that I don’t know about. 😂 When it comes to the usability I don’t see it as a problem yet, but will test it out more and let you know if I find it to be an issues. 👍 What would be your use case?
