Land Rover Discovery 3/4 LR3/4 Gullwing Installation - First Impressions
If you are planning on doing a gullwing installation your self, no matter the car brand, or just want to see how it's done, then this video series is for you!
In this part 4, of the Gullwing install series, I am removing the tape and I finally get to push the buttons and open the gullwing window. Hear my first thoughts as I inspect the the new addition to my Discovery overland build.
If you haven't seen part one, two and three, then you can take a look at them afterwards. Links below.
The Gullwing Product was supplied by Out-Rack, free of charge, and this is the link to their website: www.out-rack.com/en/prodotto/...
More info about the gullwing at the bottom.
I want to thank the people over at Out-Rack for sending it to me and for letting me test it out in proper winter condition. In return I will give them feedback on the product on how it copes with the tough arctic winter conditions and the salty roads we have here.
Thank you for watching this one and I wish you best,
Simon Mastermo 👍😊

Out-Rack Gullwing Information
"
The Gullwing side panel for Discovery L319 from Out-Rack is the ultimate component for those who want to prepare their vehicle for Overlanding.
The kit forms the basis of an expandable and modular loading system, which allows space inside and outside the vehicle that would otherwise be unused to be utilised.
The Gullwing for Discovery L319 replaces the side glass of the third row and is installed either with screws, not visible when the operation is complete, or with normal window sealant.
The basic kit consists only of the panel that is installed in place of the glass. Made of stainless steel and powder-coated, it is manufactured using the best components on the market. In order to get the most out of the product, Out-Rack recommends installation by qualified personnel (body shops).
Practical gas dampers make it easy to open and close the door, and a pair of locks with a key allow the door to be securely closed. An automotive gasket prevents water from entering through the door opening, even under the most demanding conditions such as high-pressure washing.
Two aluminium ‘Airline’ rails firmly fixed to the panel offer the possibility of anchoring Out-Rack accessories or other objects outside the vehicle. They are supplied in natural aluminium as standard and are also available in black, powder-coated on request.
As a complement to the panel, there is also the specific internal cabinet equipped with panel springs and shelves.
NOTE:
The product is compatible with 5- or 7-seater vehicles.
Removing the right glass also removes one of the radio’s two FM antennas. From the tests run, this does not prevent good channel reception. For basic audio systems (6-button radio), however, the installation of an external FM antenna (not included) is recommended.
By removing the left glass, the TV antenna is removed. In this case, it was not possible for us to carry out tests ourselves.
Material: Stainless Steel
Finish: UV-resistant powder coating
Kit contents:
no. 1 gullwing side panel with door
nr. 2 “Airline” rails
hardware required for installation

It's surprising that externally there hatch looks small but when viewed internally it could really only be a little wider, it's just that the external metal bit is so large to cover the whole area making the hatch appear small. Great finish and the installation looks smart. Time for that awning now 👍🏻

I haven’t thought of it that way but when you say it you’re quite right. The metal surrounding is closer than the outside pillars so definitely not to much to gain by expanding the opening. Personally I don’t find it too small, it’s going to be big enough for what I need it for by a long shot. 👍 Was just out on a one nighter this weekend, Friday to Saturday, and I definitely need an awning. 🚗👍 Awning with two side walls, have been so many trips that the only thing keeping us warm is the fire and the shelter from the wind. 😊 Just need to find an awning sponsor now.🤙 You are good at helping me out in that sense. 😉

A rubber strip on the inside of the hinge should catch any water and direct it either side of the hatch. With a small table on the air rail below the window it will be a great height for cooking and eating while standing. Also good for fridge access without having a fridge slide.

Yeah, maybe make a V shape thing. 👍 Yeah, I'm thinking both of those options, lunch, fridge and also I think recovery gear for those who offroad more than I do. 😊 We will see, I will try out different things to test it out. 👍

I was wondering why they didn't make the hatch about 4 or 5 inches bigger as it looks like it could take it. After seeing the shot from the inside it looks like they have made it as big as they could. Looks like a very nice install.

Thank you and I think you are right, not to much to do with the size, at least not with this type of gullwing and hatch mechanism. Campar van plastic windows maybe an option but not very overland tuff. 😊 I'm happy with the install my self and glad I did it. I think I will make good use of it, just need to figure what my best option are. 😊

Simon I have a jeep lover for years and almost traded my jeep wrangler for a land rover discovery ll but couldn't day of the deal , I build my vehicles into overlanding vehicles , to be honest I was on RU-vid and came across LR TIME channel working on vera lr3 so I started looking for a land rover lr3 , not sure in your country if you have copart its a auto auctions site for all types of vehicles and found a 2007 land rover lr3 chawton white clean title non running for 1100.00 us and I bought it sense then I have done a lot of upgrades for myself I its the perfect vehicle to build on and do small exterior upgrades that will change the look and keep them quessing and a conversion that never ends for and example I swap out my red lens tail lights for lr4 led it changed the tail look it really enhanced the look, I struggled if I was going to do a spare tire carrier, terrafirma sold me the instructions sucked only 2 youtube viedos one the guy paid for installation and other left out some key points so I made a couple mistakes, but still all in learning something new , the mistake I made was cutting out the swing arm mount before reconnecting the rear bumper corner back into place then use provided stencil so you won't be off center then you have to cut bigger hole , over all was extremely to install as long as you think twice cut once 😊 As you made a excellent comment drilling holes in your rover 😮 after first hole there no turning back 🤯. So I installed a snorkel , if you ever decide drilling into A pillar can be tough due to layers of metal and worrying if you going to drill into air bag , I believe it has a metal back plate facing A pillar, a snorkel will change your appearance will add more conversion, I upgraded my oem rims to black rhino arsenal rims 18" Mickey Thompson atz baja legend exp 275x65x18 , terrafirma rock sliders, a front-runner roof rack, arb awning, no light bar I choose the Hella 4in offroad lights bought 4, im still up in air on rooftop tent I want a Ikamper hard shell too expensive , man I wished I saw these gullwing window panel before I mounted a defender ladder and storage box , because I had to drill into body and modified to make them both work, as you know it's the little changes that get noticed most Buying a 2004 D2 is also a unique vehicle to build much easier than lr3 for instance soild axles front and rear, many choices to lift the vehicle the traditional headlights that makes a statement only on 03 to 04 last model the center taillights can fit 35" tires only thing it's missing is a split tail gate I bought this one also from copart 600.00 us I have a few plans upgrades on D2 much cheaper that new land rover but D2 got a bad rap on its 4.6 v8 engine having some issues and dealership charging a mint to fix the engine another youtube channel called lost cause ranch installed a 5.3 ls engine swap and if you put in search on RU-vid discovery 2 engine swap you see a title saying toyota beater it's a 2004 white discovery 2 very clean build he paid 8k sold it on bring a trailer site 45k mine is chawton white I hope I can build one this nice too I love good products like land rover passion, terrafirma, arb, front-runner brands and many new products waiting to come to life that help you build something unique and different that's reflects your personality there no reason to drive new when there's plenty of older vehicles waiting to be rediscovered keep adding good content it won't go unnoticed Nice gullwing Simon

You have done a lot. 😅 Much more than me. And 1100US, that is cheap, would be 11000US to get a TDV6 one here, V8 would be 20000US 😅 Some nice info and great that you share your experiences, many who come on here can read the comments, specially your terrafirma swing away experience. Sad they don't have some good instructions on it. Why I tend to make my videos very thorough. 👍 LR-Time is a great channel and the work they do is so good for the Discovery owners out there. 👌 Glad you are enjoying the videos and good to hear from another passionate LR owner. Best and have a great Sunday! New video out now. 😉 Simon

Yes, they supply the airline strips in black but you need to order as a special, mine are black as I don't like the silver finish
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
👍 Same, all black looks the best. Wonder if they are powder coated as well? 🤔 And have you got anything mounted on them now?
@chrishagain2833
@chrishagain2833 3 месяца назад
@LandRoverDrive Yes the are powder coated, but currently nothing mounted on them, awaiting LRP drop down table that mounts on the lower track, was supposed to be ready end of March

@@chrishagain2833 A table was my first thought as well, was thinking of making one my self. Basically to channel my self to pick up the welder again. 😊 Was also thinking small table inside that I can pull out and hook up. Just to save it from the elements, especially during winter and the salty roads.

Great work! Looks pretty good. One question: Can you also open it from inside? (As an emergency exit if the tailgate opener fails...)
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
Thank you! 😊 I’m not really sure, I need to test that. A really good question and something I will check out soon, safety is really key. I have gotten the rear hatch pull open kit from LRP so will install that soon. Have you seen it? You can use it if the tailgate actuator fails. I will also be installing a window breaker in the back, I don’t want to be stuck in there if the car catches fire for some reason. 😅

Hi Simon...looks good...however, not sure that you have the same problems in Scandinavia, but here in the UK that would have just introduced an easy way for a low-life to break in to my Disco. Those latches look like they could be just hammered/pried out? 😮
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
@AdeptHavelock I understand your concern and it's not a problem i Norway, not where I live or travel. Not sure how much the the latches can handle and if the internal will be affected, and I don't want to find out. 😂 If I roll the car or it becomes a write off I will try to remember and do the smash test. 😊 I have seen some videos from the UK and there is definitely a huge difference in the car theft levels, I would think 1% vs 20% of all cars. I would think for a smash and grab job the window would be much quicker. For cars with keyless it wouldn't really matter, gullwing or no gullwing.

I am surprised that the actual opening is so small, considering the amount of metal available to make the window. 🤷‍♂️👍🏻🙏🦘
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
Hey Grahame, looking from the inside I guess you could take out a bit more, say 1 inch in the length, but I wouldn't have gone further with a metal gullwing. If it were plastic, like camper windows, then maybe you could have even gone full size. If you look on the video-clips from the inside there is a lot less "opening space" available than it looks like from the outside. 😊 What where your thoughts around the usage, since you mention the opening size?
@grahameroberts8109
@grahameroberts8109 3 месяца назад
@@LandRoverDrive I’d probably build a box or buy one that sits under the gw so that I could access things I need while camping. It would be ideal under an awning. Cheers
@LandRoverDrive
@LandRoverDrive 3 месяца назад
@@grahameroberts8109 😊 Awning is on the top of the list so hopefully I could get one on before the fall. 👍 I have ha shelf system that is going in and in it, it will be room for either recovery gear or a light lunch kit. Will try to test out different solution on different trips and see what works. Recovery, lights and air would be a nice setup.
