I know a lot more work went into this wonderful video than is apparent. Christian's craftsmanship is most excellent! I did similar (but more crude) testing with the oil pump of a 1.6L VW Rabbit (Caddy) diesel, so I can certainly relate. I found that pumping the oil heats it significantly, and somewhere I may still have those records. A larger displacement pump may create more heat, but I doubt this will be a problem for you. I would like to reinforce the comment about replacing the pump when replacing the timing belt! My wife had a 1997 Toyota Camry, and I wasted a great deal of time looking for an oil leak - even changing the oil pan gasket - to no avail. The leak was from the intricately shaped oil pump cover o-ring, which had hardened and cracked. After that, I made it a practice to change the o-ring when changing the belt - BUT - as you know, not all o-rings are the same! At one point, I purchased a belt change kit that included the belt, the cam and crankshaft seals, the oil pump seal, and the oil pump o-ring. That o-ring in the kit was not thick enough, and I still had to buy one from Toyota! At one point, I also bought a camshaft seal that leaked, even though it was new. It is disappointing when a large job is finished and there is a problem because of new part quality. This can happen even when a lot of attention is focused on the details. Thank you for your wonderful video, Vera and Christian!
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 2 года назад
We can fully relate to you. When we changed the oilpump on my Disco 3, we still had a oil leak. We keep an close eye on it since the oil it looses is only minute and just collects on the underbody protection. But we will be replacing the oilpump and all belts and hopefully eliminate that leak soon. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera

What an absolutely brilliant video. I can't believe the amount of engineering Christian does, to perfection, to demonstrate or test the functionality of a part. Vera's laugh whilst all the machining is going on is very contagious btw! Great episode, which I'm guessing took far far longer than the length of the video. Well done, again, you two, you really are a great couple. Take care.

Perfect timing with this video. My 2007 D3 is due it's timing belt and I know the pump was replaced with the upgraded FOMOCO one in the last change and so I was therefore considering whether I need to do the pump again. After seeing your tests I will do the pump again. Keep these videos coming as they are a real encouragement and source of great information and fun to watch.

Great video as usual and well needed education on this topic! The only thing I would have suggested had I been there would have been to adjust the precision flow valve such that 1 or 1.5 bar was maintained on all three pumps. You would then have demonstrated the difference in flow rate between the different displacements and levels of wear. Other than that, bravo!

Now that you have your test rig, you should test liquid moly and also Lucas fully synthetic additive with fresh and worn out oil in the different pumps to see how much they help. You might need an oil heater (sump heater). Thank you for the video.

I changed my 08 pump with the upgraded FoMoCo pump at 195k km and stripped down the original one - had no visible wear after that km. At 340k now. I've never been happy with the time it takes the oil pressure to build up in these engines - a good few seconds if the car hasn't run for a while, but so far mine is still running very well.

Really interesting video, nice one. I have heard that the biggest risk of spun bearing is right after an oil change, while the filter housing fills up. Why not have a filer housing with a removable plug so that the housing can be filled up with oil before start up? Keep up the great videos!

I Show in my essential maintenance video how to prime the pump and filter. The oil galley on a TDV6 does not fill slower than on other cars and there is a check valve to prevent draining as well. The bearing failure is not caused by this issue alone I think. Christian

Just replaced ours, I’m 4th owner, and she just clocked 220,000 on the original pump, wow, I’m glad it’s done! Haha 😆 first thing we did was the trans filter, at 160k. Too late it turns out….

Hi. Thank you very much for your hard work put on this channel. I have been watching the videos for last 3 years. Very informative and entertaining all the time. I am going to order timing belt of my disco 4 sdv6 engine with 180000km runtime. Seems like I should also change the oil pump

Yeah, we always change boths together, the oil pump and the rear fuelpump timing belt) at the same time. And we do that at about a 120000km running time. 👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

What a fantastic video. I bought a new oil pump from a Citroën main dealer I think in 2017 to fit to my Jag XJ 2.7 to get the reinforced pulley boss. I have no idea whether it's a 13mm or 15mm pump though. My car is now at 170k miles (272k km) and so I have moved to 10w40 oil. It rarely drops below freezing in London and I do sometimes drive to Southern Spain. If there any possibility that you could rerun your test to compare the default 5w30 with 10w40? My feeling is that the thinner oil is for lower emissions and better fuel economy rather than protecting the engine. What do you think?

That would be a good test - to see the viscosity differences.

Yes, 5w30 is for fuel economy. 10w40 is ok I think. I found only Total Oil with the necessary approvals. Testing oils requires heat. This is something for the pros. Thanks. Christian

@@Vera_and_Christian Project Farm has done many tests of the different brands of oil. I will have to check and see if he has done one on viscosity.

I read somewhere that a lube oil manufacturing company recommending the W40 oil instead of the W30 as viscosity at high temperature drops off thus offering no protection leading to breakdown. Better play it safe.

@@vs6300 and I am sure that I heard that the first Jaguar S-Types with the 2.7 specified a thicker oil, but then Jaguar Landrover changed it to a thinner oil later on.
