@@Vera_and_Christian Mine were all good but I still replaced them while the body was off, if you leave them too long they become too difficult to replace. They are not expensive, and should be part of regular maintenance just like spark plugs on petrol engines. Not sure why is not the case..

This engine rebuild is an excellent series. Sadly, most of your viewers will never tackle such a beast as the LR engine, it is just to costly to get wrong, and the special tooling is beyond the means of many to make, and is expensive to purchase for a one-off build. I have done my share of engine works in my younger days, and have done works on my kids vehicles; but not on a modern engine like we have today. You guys are quite inspirational. I love your work!!

I also find it very inspiring as to the level that is possible. I work with dirty tools, dirty workshop in my back yard, measuring things by eye and feel and "that will do". This quality of work & dedication is just amazing , this quality of work would never happen at a JLR dealer. The price of labour & parts would be far in excess of the cost a replacement engine. Another greatly detailed video! I am reminded how I spent many hours testing the oil pump in my VW Rabbit diesel engine, and eventually making parts so the pump could be tested on my drill press in a pan of oil. One of my findings - which you may have also noticed - is that pumping the oil creates a noticeable amount of heat! In the end, I found my oil pressure problems arose from the fact that the expert shop that rebuilt the head had line-bored the cam bearings for use with a camshaft having oversized bearing journals, and had installed a camshaft having standard sized bearing journals. The oil just squirted out of the gap, especially when warm. The experts then sent me another rebuilt head that had insufficient valve relief, such that even with a head gasket of proper thickness and properly set cam timing, the valves contacted the pistons slightly. That was a lot of work, but not nearly as much work as you have put into the LR engine! My hat is off to you!
@Vera_and_Christian
@Vera_and_Christian 2 года назад
This Disco had perfect oilpressure, better than on mine Disco 3. We always keep an eye on the oilpressure because that is one indication of a n upcoming crankshaft failure. We did change the oilpump however because of the metal chip contaminated oil. Our video about the oilpumps comparison will be out soon. 😃👍🙋‍♀️Vera
@dustcommander100
@dustcommander100 2 года назад
Cool! I am looking forward to the video! I am presently helping a friend with oil pressure issues on his restored 1955 Cadillac. It looks like the issue with that car is a weird design that uses a floating oil pickup - supposedly to avoid contamination in the bottom of the pan - but the floating pickup has a moving joint that can be above the oil level if the level is low, - which allows it to draw in air. It is a classic case of overly complex design actually creating problems instead of preventing them.

Brilliant workmanship! It really has become a massive problem with these engines. I’m not sure if you remember but I mentioned that my mates were driving a disco 3 back from the Pyrenees to Bristol in the UK last week and joked about dropping it off to you for a engine rebuild. Well despite sitting outside for over a year not being touched the discovery started first time and made it all the way back fully loaded without a signal problem. It’s a 200,000 mile car and it performed just fine.

Fantastic - please see if you agree with me the oil cooler housing where the oil filter sits has a non return valve where the dirty oil enters from the pump side. It goes out clean through the middle hole of the oil filter to lubricate the engine internals. So, the oil content of the oil filter housing do not drain back into the sump through the oil filter when the engine is off. The oil filter stays full because of this non return valve. Problem is this NRV is always covered with oil when you change the filter. You can only see it on a new oil cooler assembly. I think this is a feature everyone is very confused about in the 2.7 thinking the oil is taking a long time each start to fill the oil filter chamber.

I got the old cooler saved and I will analyze it down the road. I also do not believe that the entire content drains back. I did test and compare various oil pumps of the LR3 and found surprising results. This video will be out in a few weeks. Christian

Maybe you could research swopping for a real engine one day BMW M57 that would be awesome to see. Absolutely, love your work and Vera you are fantastic.

I loved working on that engine, learned so much about it👍. And when we started it yesterday evening, it came back to live immediately. 🙋‍♀️Vera

Excellent, detailed and informative video as usual, Vera & Christian. We thought of starting a similar project on our side. Silvi is already practicing her: "Oh my god" , but is still not quite there, I'm ready with the tools. So, ... camera ready, light ready, ... but bloody hell, this damn Landcruiser refuses to break down. Bugger. Ok, we'll wait ... 🤣🤣🤣

You can see that in the recent videos when we rebuild our 2.7L Engine. And then you can also comment that we did not tap the valve caps. Engine has been running fine for 6000km now. 😃👍🙋‍♀️

Love watching these videos guys, I've been thinking of buying an LR3 for a while now, it does seem a bit daunting knowing what can go wrong, but your videos seem to make the choice much better, although a rebuild is way out of my league.! I will say that hear in Ireland nearly all LR3s for sale have close too or over 200,000 miles on them, there was one for sale a few months ago with 580,000kms on it 😳 who would of thought a disco 3 would do that, its crazy

Thank you 🤗. Same here in Germany with all LR3s, and prices go up. We are looking now for a project Disco 3 and that is really difficult. 👍🙋‍♀️Vera
