In 2012 I tested and reviewed the Land Rover Discovery LR4 by testing it on a arduous, no fluff off-road track called Baboons Pass in Lesotho. This is a re-edit of a series of videos previously shown on this channel.

The pinnacle of auto journalism, Andrew. I bought an LR4 after watching this series 5 years ago. And as you said in your long-term review, it is indeed the best all-around 4x4

This is my favourite Drivers review of the Discovery 4 by far, it is also quite possibly the best Sales Video ever produced as well. Everything put together however is absolutely stunning and if you're wanting an off road vehicle I think the Discovery 4 is ideal.

Well done, Sir! You have certainly opened up the neural pathways again! As a huge Landcruiser, Landrover Series and Defender, Discovery 1 and Jeep TJ and CJ fan you've taught me something here. I believe all my series and 110 Defender Landies would have done this as well as my diminutive Jimny. I am seriously impressed with the underlying capabilities of the LR4. It just goes to show how preconception can be so wrong. Oh, and, the amazing Mercedes Geländewagen, now we're talking! Thank you for your e excellent cinematography and content that touches the heart of someone who grew up in a Natal Parks Board family in the Bush driving Jeep CJ 2a's, landies and Landcruiser FJ45's offroad from a young age. I love your work and your authenticity. Bayete!

Had an LR4 that I modded with 18s, larger hybrid AT/mudder tires, ARB bumper and a winch. Wheeled it everywhere. Did the same trails my buddies in Jeeps did, just sometimes couldn’t take the same line. For traction, it was better than Jeeps without lockers. And it never lacked for traction, you just needed to know how to drive it. Didn’t have nearly the articulation, and that wasn’t a traction problem, but a safety problem sometimes. There is not much scarier than having your front wheel 3 feet in the air on the downslope on a mountainside. And the air suspension was one of those subconscious anxieties- I didn’t regularly think about it failing and leaving me stranded, but it was always in the back of my mind. Eventually it had engine problems after an accident, and I needed more room anyway to carry my mountain bike. So now I’m in a Jeep Gladiator. Fits my wheeling and carrying needs better and I love it. But still a fondness in my heart for Roger, my LR4. We had a lot of great adventures together.

If you maintain a Disco properly, including the electronics, they are the best car for anybody with a big family who wants to go anywhere, wants to tow anything, etc.I love my Disco 4 2015, and I invested in TuffAnts 18" wheels. I always counter Andrew's comment on the big 20" wheels as standard. He always puts new wheels and tyres on his Troopie ;-)

@philhealey4443
@philhealey4443 9 дней назад
@realtoverland My 290GD owned for ten years was disastrously unreliable, experiencing a wheel bearing failure shortly after a front tyre ripped a wing off a Volvo in a roundabout lane clash, with no body damage whatsoever. Stronger than Time and G Wagens can cost you less than nothing in long-term depreciation. I'm still getting tempted to try an elderly Land Cruiser though, if I can find one not looking like a bar of soap or a Tonka toy and it would need to be propelled by 4.2 litres of non turbo perpetual rotation. And I've had a 1978 Range Rover since 2002; that is a completely different breed to later Land Rover products being reasonably reliable and devoid of electronics bar the alternator diodes and electronic ignition.

LR4 Best Car by far, In the process of purchasing a 2013 V8. Sold by SDV6 for a Ranger Rover Sport 2017. Sold it after a year lots of Luxury but a LR4 for the Money, Power, Comfort and Space compared to others of the same year and newer its just awesome. I just love my Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6, 2005 model. I still off-road on very challenging trails here in South Africa and even with 360,000 km on the clock, it still can go anywhere relatively easily. I am only now needing to change the injectors for the first time. It is expensive, but this vehicle is like a family member, so we'll worth it. I know when I drive this vehicle, my family is safe and secure. When I show clients farms that I sell, they cannot believe how capable it is and how comfortable it is over rough terrain. It also simply looks good. My 24 year old landy is still my daily runner. If you look after this vehicle, you will enjoy hundreds of hours of total bliss.

Andrew, - love your videos and your honesty. I bought my 2016 D4 Landmark a year ago - yes, 20" wheels.... My biggest problem is tyres - being in Europe I need all season, all terrain tyres with the snowflake symbol to make them legal in winter in places like Germany and Austria. I have only found a single tyre on the market that fulfils this at the standard 255/50/R20 size and that's the Yokohama Geolander. There is the Falken, Wildpeak which is an excellent tyre, but that is 255/55/R20 which is slightly larger - hopefully it will fit as I rather like these. But the D4 really IS the perfect vehicle - great for the 1,000 mile cross Europe drive I will do in a few days time, mostly on the Autobahns - but then, as you say, it's also perfect for driving the mountain trails in the Alps and the mountains of Central Europe. Much better than the D5 which replaced it - which is why I bought one of the very last D4s.
@andrewjones-productions
@andrewjones-productions 12 дней назад
I thoroughly enjoyed that! Especially as I own a Discovery 5 which I have found does everything I ask of it. Unfortunately, here in Japan, there aren't any trails as difficult as Baboon Pass to take it on, but I had to drive across an extremely muddy rough solar panel construction site in the mountains of Fukushima. I had normal stock tyres and I didn't even have to take it out of high gear. Far better than my 3 litre petrol engines manual Pajero which I owned before it. Other cars (SUVs) struggled even on the flat parts of that construction site, but my D5 didn't even spin or slide on the steep hills. I only wish it didn't come with (stupid) 20" rims!! My biggest gripe with the D5 is that the rear window should be about 5cm lower at the base as trying to reverse on a single track lane is a challenge due to the poor visibility. Yes, I do it old school by turning my head to look down the middle of the car and out of the back window. That allows me to check for obstacles on both sides as well as the road behind me. Now, .....the only question that remains from this fantastic video is whether Andrew bought a pair of frilly underwear for himself or not! :-) Well, that is for Andrew to know and we to wonder about.

Like most internet sayings. There isn’t as much truth in it as you might think. The Discovery 3 and 4 are far more robust and better engineered than some think. modern luxuary road suv's are much joked about but even some of those might get quite far in the environment they are thought at. that is rough roads and slippy grounds, imagine this as a short road section at your own farm. LR has a core market here but there are some others that might be better than most people think. take first gen mercedes ML that one from jurassic park as example. i wonder how far it actually would get, or the budget nissan xtrail. we rarely learn about actual limitations, just complains about missing this and that instead. there are videos online showing how scandinavian people are pushing their station wagons through deep mudtracks for fun. that amazed me more than another jeep on the rocks tbh. great video and what an amazing country.

I personally think that Discovery was at prime with first version, 89-98, very good and reliable engines 200tdi or 300tdi, easy to fix. Next disco generations spends unfortunately more time at mechanix due to advanced electronics and romances with different companies that were delivering engines bmw/ford. No offense to anyone, if they are well maintained they could be reliable but you can’t go wrong with D1. Thank you for uploading videos, cheers 🍻!
