The Land Rover Series One Club presents the gear and levers guide to the Land Rover Series 1. In this video, we explain how the four wheel drive system works across all variants of Land Rover Series one, including the free wheel gearbox system, a permanent 4wd system.
We start with a 1950 Series 1 80inch, giving an overview of the high and low range system.
We explain how the system ‘free wheels’ when in reverse, which is why you only get rear wheel drive in reverse and why you can’t reverse up a slippery hill - and how you can lock the system to get four wheel drive in reverse. This is also very useful for when you are descending a slippery hill, maximising control.
We then move on to the four by two select gearbox and how this is a more conventional four wheel drive system - but it is only accessible in low range.
Then we move to the two wheel drive selectable four wheel drive system, which operates differently again. In normal road driving, you get rear wheel drive to reduce transmission wear - but this system can now engage four wheel drive in high range… but there is a trick to getting it back out of four wheel drive! Plus, low range is now engaged permanently in low range…
Please do watch the entire “Land Rover Series 1 - Gear and Levers Guide - How the 4wd system works” video for a full explanation.

Nice to see the yellow and red levers tied together with a genuine rover elastic band. As all rovers from the fifties to the eighties are obliged to have. Mine included.

I've been familiar with the 4-wheel-drive system on a Series Land Rover since I was 12.

Es fácil manejarlos, debe aprender a sincronizar cambios y hacerlos suaves para no quebrar la flecha corta

Doesn’t the transmission wind up if it’s in fwd all the time the power is on?

The first 80" looks neat, but not all original if it is an 1949/1950 model.. Is it the "lights behind the grille" Landy.! I could only see the 2 x later wiper motors, and the turning light (flicker) control arm. Eary models only had one wiper motor, and the switch for the flickers were on the hooter/steering centre.. Or am I wrong.. Just checking... Love the 4 wheel reverse lock, first time ever I have seen it... Only know about "the yellow knob". Thanks for a nice video. First time I hear about the 4wd design with the free-wheel in those very early LRs. It looks to me as a very bad engineering concept. I must wonder why Rover did not just adopt the Willys Jeep 2-lever 4wd system which is superior in concept to anything LR has designed since.
