One trick I’ve learned from Gwynn Lewis is to use a plastic heat shrink on the damper housing, which when installed with a heat gun, protects the metal casing from stone chips preventing corrosion and keeping it in better condition. Might be useful next time you replace your dampers.

Fantastic work etc but whilst you guys have been grounded in Cape Town we have done a great tour of eastern SA and now well into Zimbabwe. Sure the old Defender is falling apart but it somehow keeps going. I think we'll be home before you are on the road again 😁

I had a Series 2 which I used primarily for trips from Durban to Sodawana Bay to go diving. This was in the 70's. I used to call it my hobby car. One weekend using it and one weekend fixing it. You need to be a mechanic if you own a Landrover! Today I have a Japanese 4FWD which gets used for trips to Fraser Island, Double Island and Moreton Island, an ocean away! Never work on it. But I had a good grounding in being a hands on mechanic!

Yes you're correct about the hub nut torque being very high, but that wheel bearing spacer isn't a crush tube, a crush tube crushes to attain a certain preload that can be set at a varying torque (like on a 110/130 Salisbury axle pinion) The spacer you're talking about is precision ground and is available in slightly different thicknesses from LR to set the wheel bearing end float. Most people throw the spacer away and buy 2 lock nuts and a tab washer, reverting back to the 300tdi type system, this allows you to adjust the wheel bearings without having to buy different thickness spacers from LR and the hub nut torque is much lower at 65Nm 👍

Toyota oil seals come with pregreased inner lip. About the torque. Not all the bolts need the perfect torque, Wheel nuts, head bolts, yes, I see a lot of people stripping threads when setting torque on engine oil and auto trans drain bolts. Just snug is what you need for those. Any 10, 12 and 14 mm, don't use long handle ratchets; for 17, 19 and up, yes longer gets it done. We have a 73 Ford Cortina (British made) and everything breaks and I learned wrenching thanks to it! yes, we still have it in awesome condition!

Nice work. Extra tip. you can your side shaft hub (5 bolt flange) as a tool to press the inside seal to the correct depth and square. TD5 also had the spacer (colour coded)(not a crush tube) and knock over nut. I cleaned up the old nuts and carry them as a set of spare lock type nuts. Cant wait for the next video update. Hi Lee, really enjoying the bears rebuilding process. You'll love the lof clutch, make sure those first 500 miles of bedding in are done properly. My only reservation is that clutch assist spring, I had one which broke very quickly & was replaced with the new thicker version, which unfortunately didn't last must longer than the first, so I replaced the clutch slave cylinder with a genuine landrover one & never looked back. Keep up the great work both of you.

Please! Next time you do the seals on that ball change that Helicoil out for a Threadsert! Helicoil's are cheap and nasty and DO NOT hold up for long. Reason being the helicoil's are basically hardened wire and the wire moves with vibration. A Threadsert is all one piece and will be as strong as the original! Also sorry I call them Threadelserts most other people call them Time-sert. I have just been a mechanic on off road vehicles for over 30 years and will no longer use Helicoils at all for anything. I learnt my lesson the hard way.
