I have got my self certate cxh 5000. Loving it so far however rod I use are bit unusual 10f rated max pe2 and cast 14 to 45g. Also have 9.2f pe2 casting from 15 to 30g. It's definitely chellenging then using cut bait as you need to be in specifically well structured place to fishing with lure. I am finding bit difficult finding good ledgy where I can access on foot around Auckland wokworth area.
Excellent info, Tony. I had a Supercasta and got the Slugger as well after your recommendation in the earlier 'how to' vid - the Slugger is a great rod for heavier softbaiting off the boat too. I'd recommend you get hold of some of the 5" Z Man Streakz curly tailz from Aussie (the wriggly action is dynamite on the drop in the shallow moocher territory you fish, and they actually measure 6" on a ruler - big enough for the bigger snaps to get interested).
Mate there awesome reels I have the 5000 ark. Do yourself a favour and pre-service it. The seals are dry so add some grease to the base seal and the drag knob seal. Also the gears in mine were dry of grease. I added some nice Reel grease on those as well easy to get to with bottom cap off. Also worth while if your going to be fight g decent fish is to change the drag washers to carbintec washers can also add a bearing to the shaft but the grease and drag washers are the most important part felts join St not up to lots of decent fish.
When you decide to give the stick bait a biff, are you still using the 30lb braid and 30lb leader? So are you able to target moochers and kings with the same reel set-up? Cheers
Yeh bro same leader. You need to do a whole lot more angling with a bit of luck in the mix to land a big king on this gear but definitely possible. Check out Sammy's 1m fish off the rocks on instagram. Few hairy moments in that fight!
Hey bro i have it cranked up pretty high for the strike...the reason is is that any big fish ive lost usually happens in the first big run (first 5 seconds). I try and turn their head quick as possible. With the SOL and the certate you can afford to lock up pretty hard. Depends on the area your fishing too. If its more clear can back off more
Great stuff! How long does it take to start having success with softbaiting? I haven't tried it before and curious how much of a learning curve it is, particularly off the rocks
After fishing with big baits and burley for years, we had success straight away with the softbaits. It did take some time to get the jighead weights spot on though. Better gear has also allowed us to land much bigger fish. Hard to get away with ultra light softbait setups from the rocks
