Selection and step-by-step installation of a Long Ranger TR68L fuel tank into a Land Cruiser 200 turbo-diesel. The tank is a 180 litre replacement for the standard sub-tank, increasing total fuel capacity to 273 litres, almost doubling the driving range compared to a standard Land Cruiser 200.

Toyota should have one trim like this ready from the factory instead of gimmicky trims such sahara and heritage

Love your videos, a great reference source. I've settled on the combination diesel/water tank and its about to arrive, so I'm swatting up on the installation video. I notice the LR tanks have a lot of capacity above the breather port which would become air-locked, have you ever had the chance to verify the actual usable capacity of the tank? I was thinking of putting in slightly less than spec on the Ultragauge to compensate. Thanks

How does one buy a tank? I live in the USA and I can't seem to find it on ARB's website since it's a distributor.

Perhaps ARB don't sell them in the US. I'd suggest you contact them and ask. Failing that, try contacting the manufacturer at thelongranger.com.au

Has the installation of the long range tank affected your use of fast flow diesel pumps? Since fitting a long ranger aux in my 200 series I can use full flow until what feels like the front tank is full but then I have to slow flow down substantially otherwise the diesel backs up the filler neck stopping flow
@austimages
@austimages 2 года назад
Yes, it does limit the use if high-flow. Main tank fills fine. But as the long range tank starts to fill, the breather can't quite keep up and it trips off. I drop back to the second latch and it's OK.

It's an Ultragauge MX. Available direct from their website. Works with any modern vehicle. Provides various gauges, plus trip computer functionality and alarms for engine parameters.

I had one of these fitted at ARB 12 months ago & it’s a great Australian made product. However I believe this is considered a major modification and it needs to be signed off by an engineer and a modification placard fitted. How important is this and does anyone really do it TIAV

Good day new to looking at fitting long range fuel tanks and was wondering will the fuel full-emty gauge still operate the same
@austimages
@austimages 3 года назад
Not quite. The 200 uses a single gauge for both tanks, calibrated so the top 1/3 represents the 45L sub tank, and the lower 2/3 is the 93L main. The factory gauge still thinks the rear tank is only 45L, even though it's now 180L. So you'll find it takes a very long time for the gauge to drop to 2/3 (as the 180L is consumed), and it will then drop faster as the 93L main tank is consumed. Essentially, the top 1/3 of the gauge represents 2/3 of the new fuel capacity.

I have had a Brown Davis 180 litre long range fuel tank fitted to my 2019 LC200. Question is which tank empties first?
@austimages
@austimages 4 года назад
The engine draws fuel from the main (centre) tank. As it draws fuel from that tank, it's constantly refilled from the rear tank. So the rear tank effectively empties first.

I wonder if the removal of the tire carrier cross member affects the frame's structural integrity
@austimages
@austimages Год назад
No, it's just there for the tyre carrier. There's a massive boxed crossmember at the back, and a round one just in front of where the tyre was.

+bluesky I would love a Tesla P85D as my next on-road car.... However, for remote / long distance touring and towing, I suspect it will be a long time before electric 4WDs are a viable proposition. The technology just doesn't exist yet for sufficient range and viable recharging. Give it time and it will come though.
@cwehbe
@cwehbe 8 лет назад
Australian Images That's what I thought as well. But then I found out about 2 things, there is a company called VIA Motors. They basically are electric versions of GM commercial trucks with on board electric generators. All commercial fleets are buying them. Lets not forget about locomotive freight trains as well. All freight trains are electric with on board diesel generators. The instant massive torque of an electric motor is so perfect for heavy duty applications. I wish I could get a Land Cruiser that way.
@austimages
@austimages 8 лет назад
+bluesky It improves torque range, but it doesn't solve either the environmental or complexity issue though. In fact, it adds substantial complexity!
@cwehbe
@cwehbe 8 лет назад
Australian Images If you add the gas or diesel generator... yes and no, complexity in terms of systems involved increases, but the power train overall is simpler and more efficient. A good example would be the Chevrolet volt. When it is operating without charging at all, so the gas generator is providing all the electricity, it is far more efficient than a car that size with a regular gas engine of same size through a transmission. That's because you eliminate loss of efficiency through transmission, drive shafts, gears, axles... For long hauls as you were thinking, we have to assume purely gas or diesel generator since the battery at this point would be insufficient.

@saeedalblooshi3032
@saeedalblooshi3032 7 лет назад
What about the spare tire. Should be relocated or it can be installed in its place also what about fuel gauge will it work right
@austimages
@austimages 7 лет назад
For this tank you need to relocate the spare tyre. But they make a smaller version which allows it to remain in place. The fuel gauge still works, but it's not really accurate. The 1st third of the gauge represents the first 2/3 of the fuel capacity. The last 2/3 of the gauge represents the last 1/3 of the fuel capacity. Sounds odd, but it's fine once you get used to it.

Not towing, I'd get around 2100km on average, with a mix of highway/city/offroad, depending on weight. On an outback trip, heavily loaded and towing a camper (total weight was around 5.5T), range was 1600km, with a mix of highway and offroad.

@austimages

Well, you are adding 50-150kg of extra weight (depending on how full the tank is), so there is a minor affect on performance, just as with adding anything with that much weight.

This is an auxillary tank! not a replacement tank!! what is is the point of replacing a tank from 138 litres to 140 litres!!
@austimages
@austimages 7 лет назад
The LC200 has two tanks, a 93 litre and a 45 litre, although they essentially operate as one large tank. This Long Ranger tank is 180 litres and replaces just the 45 litre tank. So the total capacity increases from 138 litres to 273 litres.
