Australia is a big country, a landscape that requires more than factory fuel tanks can handle. A decision to upgrade set a chain of new products for the rear end of the XploringOz Toyota Landcruiser.
In this episode I go over the issues I needed to fix and the rationale behind why I choose certain products to create the ultimate tyre carrier, fuel storage and water supply combination on my Toyota Landcruiser.
I finally decide on a product to carrier the spare tyre and remove it from underneath the vehicle where it is exposed to unnecessary damage before it even gets used.
Moving on I toss up between both ARB’s Frontier Long Range tank and The Long Ranger tanks and try and determine which tank is best suited to my requirements.
Once I’ve finally got the fuel system sort, adding convenient access to my water storage was next on the list.

I remove the back seats in my patrol for water, generator and fuel Keeps the weight low and central It’s just the two of us as the kids have moved out

I have a Longranger diesel/water combo with a twin Kaymar on the back. Was lucky enough to buy the car with those on it already. Love the fuel range & the convenience of the water storage, brilliant for long trips up north. The water pump/flow meter is taking it to the next level. Well done.

I've had an ARB poly tank on my 200 for approx 2 years. Not being baffled has not bothered me at all. I find when filling the tank I will get flow back out of the filler pipe at some pressure. I stand to one side so I don't get covered in Diesel. I have learned to listen for the googling and let go of the trigger. And then start to top it up a small amount at a time just to get the last 10 lts in, which is bloody time-consuming. The fuel gauge took a while to work out. Have since got a Scan Gauge. I have an Explorer twin wheel carrier on the back. All up with 275 lts of fuel, 60 lts of water in bladders, tools, fridge, draws, spares the list goes on. The vehicle weighs in at 3750kgs. She got a GVM upgrade to 4015kgs. I get approx 2000ks on the blacktop and 1200 off-road. Hope this will help anyone looking at a Polly tank.

Agreed this was another great video. Good to see somebody with the smarts to really think through the options, their pro’s & cons. My last build (79 single cab) I had a monster Long Ranger Aux tank to replace the 90lt Toyota tank. It was a great tank. I never noticed any increased fuel consumption on driving around with it full v it empty. As the vehicle was touring full time it always weighed either 3500kg with that tank empty & about 3650kg with it full & there was just no noticeable difference in fuel consumption. I put it down to something shaped like a brick at 100km/h with set gearing was doing exactly the same thing at either weight. I did notice however, stop/start driving was where weight was noticeable in every way …..so I guess I’m trying to say, if you are travelling at highway speeds for a day (to get to a destination) it made virtually no difference consumption wise & it was great not having to hunt fuel in places I had no interest in stopping at. Having 55lts of drinking water underneath is the bees knees although I’d suggest on long or remote trips it might still be a good idea to carry one of those old 20lt Jerry’s inside as well.

This will be good for when we hit the road in December 2022. Yes, I agree. I am hoping to do the CSR next year (if its open) and will be carrying a lot more water in addition to this tank. Another good video - I went a similar route to get advantage of on-board water when we travel without a trailer, with a few differences that might be of interest to fine tune your set up. - Check out the Frontrunner lockable water tap - its a ball valve mechanism and you can mount it in a position that gives good clearance to the tailgate and makes it accessible even when the wheel carrier is folded into storage position, for quickly washing hands on the go. You can also secure it if worried about leaks or tampering - To help with greasy hands and improve camp hygiene I cable tied a hand soap dispenser to back of the wheel carrier. - Rather than running the supplied fill hose I opted for a short hose under the rear, with male garden fitting on the spare NPT port - as well as giving me a gravity feed outlet it allows me to push the water into the tank for quicker fills - I looped a hose up behind the diesel filler as a tank breather, with gauze filter added to its end I'll send through some pics to explain further in case you're interested Cheers

Slee Rear bumper for The 200 series is the best in the market hands-down. Made of course you had to give your business to an Australian company. In the USA we do the same thing most of the time. But I have to say I just had it installed on my rig and it is a work of art. It probably belongs in a museum for four-wheel-drive and not on the back of my Land Cruiser but just the same. The welds the functionality the quality is the best in the industry. I think other bumper companies try to emulate them. Do you have a great rig thanks for posting.

@@brad69rambler Hey mate, so to be completely honest, I'm still playing around with the 'perfect' settings at the moment. I'm generally running on the stiffer side. Running the compression about 2 numbers higher than the rebound. This seems to work well, but obviously it would depend how heavy your vehicle is and the terrain you are driving as too how high you set them. I'm set right up the top end at the moment, but probably a little too stiff for an empty vehicle. Cheers.

@@XploringOz A couple of Q's if you don't mind Nathan - 1) Fill point near air filter under bonnet - did you expand / extend the 13mm PEX to allow for easy filling? 2) How long does the gravity fill take? Assume that's where the breather is also? 3) What flex hose did you use to access the Kaymar section? Any leaks thus far?

@@heathLC200 No problems, I'll help out where I can. So the filler pipe is supplied with the tank and is about 25 or 32mm in diameter, so not a PEX style pipe. Its a reinforced PVC type pipe that I've covered in some split conduit for extra protection. Given the large filler pipe, it fills very quickly. I've never managed to fill it too fast, even filling direct from mains water supply. There is a breather, it's a flexible hose that goes up and around a cross member underneath the rear drivers side of the vehicle and then back down again. This does spill a little when the tank is completely full, but otherwise works without issue. The flex hose between the PEX hose is just a short section of a thick anti kink regular hose from Bunnings. I know it's not food grade, but it's working well and the have been no leaks throughout the system thus far! I hope this can answer your questions, more than happy to clarify if I've missed something. 👍

@@XploringOz Thank-you again _ My tank installation is scheduled at ARB (Head office in VIC) for Monday and I'm still getting my head around what comes with the tank and what I should source to complete the water pump & monitor installation - pretty sure I have most of it (maybe too much!) as I didn't realize the filling PVC type pipe came with the tank. I have read that spillage from the breather is an issue especially on rough tracks.

@@heathLC200 No problems at all. The tank will come with the filler and breather hoses and my ARB dealer installed that filler point in the engine bay, as shown in this video. I think it works well there as it keeps it lockable. Plenty of PEX piping, adaptors, a little flexi hose and I needed an adaptor between the tank outlet and the PEX fitting, but I really can't remember the size of the adaptor. I have seen a very little spillage from the breather. There is just a little when the tank is full, but not too much when a little has been used.

Great clip mate, I wish Id thought about that stuff more when I bought my 200. I have 3.8TGVM upgrade (not enough lol) Kmar rear bar and swing aways, 180ltre long ranger tank amongst the other usual things. Last weight was 3.45T, Still lightening up a bit. The joys of not knowing at first lol. I too came from a GU with lots of gear and can relate. Have been thinking of removing the rear bar again and singe carrier like yours, just to lose some kgs. Hi Nathan in my opinion you have one of the best touring 200 series in Oz. Once again you have methodically thought through your options and implemented the best options for you and your family's needs. Another exceptional vid. Also I'm guessing you've put ~300 extra kgs on the cruiser with the new tanks, emu wing and wheel carrier. I'm thinking you may be close if not already looking another gvm upgrade. I have almost the same setup on my GX. Just about to fit the frontier tank, already had the kaymar wheel carrier. In the GX we can utilise the rear passenger quarter panel to install a 30litre water bladder. I love your tap on the wheel carrier idea so I’m going to steal that as I already have a pump. Love your work.

And weight is my main factor, even with a gvm upgrade and a bigger payload from factory with the GX. The frontier tank is only 22kg!,

Nice mate, good choice in your setup then! Yes, the GX does have some good little storage areas that are lost with electronics on the other models, so good to see they are being used. For sure, I initially thought I was set on the Frontier tank due to the lower weight, but after some careful consideration, the Long Ranger won in my eyes. Thanks again mate, Nathan.

I like the comparison and explanation of the choice process, you definitely research well!! The big rig is a Swiss Army knife now👌, we don’t have kids ,so it’s interesting to me the way we have the same end goal but slightly different set ups, eg: we went all fuel with the tank & with double kaymar (two Jerry’s and a spare) plus a 110lt fleximake bladder for the rear footwell for bigger trips. I've got a 2021 LC200 with a long ranger tank. Total fuel capacity 270lt. I get around 1500km towing my Drifta camper, or about 2200km without. Makes it easy to cover some country and buy fuel on cheap days...

G’day Nathan, excellent video and personalized information for your demand. Very nice setup too with the one spare wheel solution. As we can see your tires are next replacement project, recon your new van will run the same rims and tire size as the 200. Means 2 spare wheels fitted on the van rear. Sure can go solo and take the 2 nd spare wheel either on the roof rack or inside an move lighter bulky items to the roof rack. Going with 2 person, rear seat stay at home to make space or putting it into the van. Recon can’t double stack 2 wheels on your rw single carrier. Let us see what the “moment of truth” shows going on the weight bridge…new tires, full fuel and water tanks, all gear weights plus calculated 250kg ball weight, no person inside. Please keep modifying. sending…. PS. We want it all!!! Cheers

Thanks mate, I've been very happy with the current setup. Yes, the tyres are well and truely due for replacement and have been on order for some time now... hopefully replaced in the next week or two. I don't believe a second spare will fit on that carrier, given the size of these wheels and I don't believe the carrier is rated for that kind of weight either. Looks like I'll be going over the weigh bridge, seems to be a popular topic. Haha, I'm trying, but I'm getting heavy! Thanks again! Nathan.

Thanks Nathan, that’s an awesome run-through. Interested in weights too, but also if you are intending to do the CSR. I think the fuel/water combo would suit me best (Goldfields and Gascoyne overlanding mainly), but with CSR on my bucket list I’m wrestling with going all fuel… That said, your water setup with the pump is very attractive. I can’t fit drawers (business case to buy the 200 was approved by the missus requiring all 7 seats stay in place :)) but may be able to hide a pump away underneath somewhere. Again big thanks, I’ve been looking forward to seeing your setup before I finalise my plans (incl. GVM upgrade) for my ‘15 Sahara. Cheers, Tim

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. Yes, the weight topic seems to be very popular and I'll be going over some scales to see exactly how much I have really added... despite the anxiety... Yes, I'm absolutely loving the water setup and originally I was actually planning on mourning the pump near that drivers side grommet behind the rear wheel for ease of plumbing, however I changed my mind after wanting to protect the pump for exposure to the elements, but I definitely believe it is possible. Thanks mate, appreciate the feedback. So I can't confirm if the reverse sensors work, I just don't use them.... ever. I have been told they do (obviously minus the one that had be removed) but like I said can't confirm. Yes the reverse camera works perfectly. On the 200 series the reverse camera is offset to the passenger side and the signal drivers side tyre carrier barely interferes at all. Cheers, Nathan.

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it. So I used a PEX system from Bunnings. I just bought the junctions required and the matching 16mm hoses. It's a similar system to John Guest Fittings, just a different size and brand. Cheers, Nathan.

Thanks mate. So to be honest, I think the parking sensors still work, but I actually never use them, so I'm not sure. In regards to the camera, yes works perfectly. Because the camera on the 200 series is offset to the passenger side and I only opted for the single drivers side spare, it barely effects the vision. Cheers, Nathan.

hey Nath! Great video, i actually done the same thing a got myself a Single swing arm for my 200 as there was no where else to store! Quick question, where has that sensor disappeared to, did you get it relocated or is is removed and reprogrammed for 3 sensors?

Thanks mate, I'm very happy with the outcome. Yes, the sensor was removed and the system is still functioning correctly with the remaining three. I don't think it had to be reprogrammed for it though. Saying this, these sensors are not something that I regularly use anyway 👍

Great video, as it covers off on so many of those challenges that we face. I suppose the one question that I have is that if you require to carry a second spare, as you would in the case of doing a rough offroad trip (Canning Stock Route), would you carry just a tyre or a whole wheel and tyre on the roof, which then limits what you can carry up there and presents challenges with weights being carried on the rack? Interested to hear what your overall weight is now.

For sure, there are many compromises that have to be made when fitting this much weight to a vehicle. So in regards to your question, I'm actually currently planning a CSR trip for next year (pending the track opening) and my plan is to carry a tyre alone on the roof, without a wheel. Yes, this will determine how much I can carry on the rack, but this trip will only be my dad and I, so I'll have a bit more room in the vehicle. (apparently 2 weeks in the desert doesn't appeal to the family....) I'll get onto documenting a video regarding the weights. Cheers, Nathan.

Man this is going to be one heavy 200, even more so if you dump a van on the back. Your 4t gvm upgrade might not be enough!! Maybe you should get a 4x4 truck instead. G'day Nathan. Definitely would love to see the impact the new mods will have to the Cruiser. With the extra weight ( when both tanks are full ) plus the tow ball weight once you get your van, that feels like its a lot of additional weight to the back. What potential impact will it have on steering if any ? Great video and it makes me wonder at times that I may have fallen for the hype in that I need every mod .... well, of course I don't. Seems like the weight issue is definitely a popular topic and I'll be going over the weigh bridge soon enough to see how I'm going, despite the anxiety... I haven't noticed any steering impact, but I do believe this is largely due to the adjustable rear suspension airbags, which help re-distribute some of the weight back to the front axle. Hey, the most important thing is that you are happy with the setup you have, it's never about comparing with others. I probably go a little overboard with my gear, both for the purposes of RU-vid to compare and review, but also because I enjoyed the process so much (against the will of my bank account...) Hey Nath, great content and good pros and cons. I am doing the same with my big girl and had the "unable to drain" as a number one reason not to go ARB tank. Kaymar bar looks good, and as per usual (in my location), the shops could not be bothered offering these up. I have one dealer that has literally stopped trying to get my business because I am asking too many questions of him. Questions he can't answer (they walk around with a headset on and seem to only want to answer the phone). How has the Uni filter gone after all of this time? I have one that I have not installed, and only because o am getting no dust past my paper filter (13000 km). This is an area I am still concerned with, as I have a mate with my exact vehicle - who replaced the standard airbox and the tuner told him that the airbox he got is not good, and he says that the 'dusting issue' is due to operators NOT closing the airbox with all latches. His comment and others that have driven 200 series since they came out 2007, have said similar things. I have also heard the 150 does the same thing; of which I also had zero issues in five years of owning one. Thoughts???

Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed the video. Yes the inability to drain was certainly a big negative. I can see why ARB has done this, as adding a bung will severely effect the structural integrity of the unit, however this is the trade off in the end. That is very poor form from your local dealers and they definitely don't deserve your business. I hope you are able to find another good fitter in your area to help you out. Yes, my experience with the UniFilter is still positive, no visible dust on the clean side or the intake pipes. As a result, I'm going to continue to run until Donaldson release their aftermarket box, which will probably be mid-next year. Yes, the sealing issue is a rumour going around, but as you may have picked, I'm very particular with my gear. I check the seals after a service and I can guarantee you that my air filter was installed correctly and wasn't 'pinched'. I still had dust passing my box without a doubt. I know there are risks associated with the UniFilter, however I just can't sit back and watch my intake fill up with the standard filter. In regards to the Prado 150 series, I didn't have an issue at all with my pre-face lift either, however I have heard of people having issues with some of the newer units .Again, don't have personal experience with it, just what I've heard going around. Hey mate, I never managed to weigh the tanks empty, but there is no doubt that this tank is much heavier than the stock tank. The addition of this tank and all the weight that it holds when it is full has made a significant difference to the overall weight of the vehicle for sure.

Yeah, so problems with vans could be an issue, but this would be depending on individual setups. Because I run a decent lift, I use a drop hitch, which keeps the tow ball and associated parts out of the way. My new van has also been ordered with an extended drawbar which helps with room at the rear of the vehicle. Cheers, Nathan.

Great vid. I noticed u had a GU. I currently have a GU but for years really wanted a 200 but covid tax forced me to look for alternative (GU). I love 4wd,ing but also love touring and towing 3t outback van. Offroad, is the 200 as good as the GU? Would be nice to have the V8 pulling power up Hills, GU struggles a little with 3t. Love the water pump and tap set up. Cheers.

Hey mate, yeah I had a '09 GU auto. It was a good 4WD, although the wife might say different. Something was always breaking down. To be honest, the 200 is a beast. Obviously power wise it blows the GU out of the water and capability, well the 200 goes further without lockers. The GU was fairly capable, but the 200, particularly the Sahara and VX variants have mutlitaerrain select which is unbelievable off-road and I've only been stuck a handful of times. For what I do, the 200 wins hands down. The only thing I don't like with the 200 is the from suspension (CV axles). I'm on my 3rd front drivers side axle now... 😩

Sure is getting close to a perfect setup. There isn't too much more to do in terms of big items, there are a few small tweaks here and there I want to fix up, but overall it certainly has become the perfect vehicle for our family. I do like the look of the GR sport and the technology it comes with. I am a little concerned with the weights of the new cruisers, being little less that the 200's, which I've already run into issues with. To be honest though, with the price tag and my great vehicle, I won't be selling anytime soon. Cheers, Nathan.

Hey Nathan Can I please ask what it cost for rear wheel carrier installed. I got a 2020 Gxl and got told I'll lose the rear sensor and to go a rear bar instead. Now I'm thinking I can go without rear sensor as I haven't needed one in all my driving life anyway, and planning on keeping the vehicle for the next 15 yrs or so. I'm leaning towards going the same way you have. Extra weight is an issue for me to and don't tow anything. Cheers m8, and great video.

Hey mate, so from memory I believe it was around the $2500 mark (give or take a little). I'm still happy with the choice and the functionality of this system. Yes, I guess it would render the sensors ineffective as the carrier covers one up on the drivers side, however I too have never used them prior and don't really mind if they don't work. Weight was the biggest influence for me and this still has to be one of the best weight/convenience solutions to date. I actually have a video coming out next Thursday regarding the weight of the cruiser, so that may be one interest to you? Cheers, Nathan

Hey mate, as briefly mention in the video, the fuel gauge own't perform like it did form factory, there really isn't much we can do about this. I have however noticed that the distance to empty, although inaccurate when the tank is full, will still come down with the tank level until it's empty. So it becomes more accurate as the level is lower, if that makes sense. Yes, the reverse camera works perfectly. The 200 series camera is slightly offset to the passenger side and the single carrier on the drivers side barely has any effect whatsoever. Cheers, Nathan.

Hey mate, so the Kaymar products are available from most (if not all) ARB stockists. I personally got my one from ARB Wangara (Western Australia) and it cost around the $2000 mark fitted. It's not the most popular item that Kaymar have, so stockists normally have to order it in, so it could take some time and is something to consider. Cheers, Nathan.

@@XploringOz It is a great product. I fitted mine in 2012 and have no problem. At the time in Southern Africa getting quality fuel was a challenge in remote places hence I went with 180L. If I recall the 122/55 L was 15/16 kg heavier than 180L tank. Anyway my setup is pretty stable, I have capacity to carry 80L water plus 270 L diesel so no chance of changing.

@@grahameroberts8109 I doubt it, but then again the ECU isn't really the type of spare I was referring too. Don't get me wrong, I'm not brand loyal to any manufacturer. I buy the best vehicle (or anything for that matter) that suits my requirements. Having worked in remote regional towns of Western Australia for the last 10 years it cannot be argued that Toyota's are the easiest to find parts/spares for. Hence the phrase 'Landcruiser Country'. This doesn't mean that others can't be sourced, or that a Landcruiser will be fixed in a day, what this means is that its more likely that you will be able to find your part, or at least access the part quicker and easier with a Toyota then most other manufactures. To be honest if something happened to my cruiser, my replacement vehicle wouldn't be a Toyota, simply because of the high price and this therefore doesn't meet my requirements, however I guarantee it wouldn't be a defender... Everyone has their own requirements, but living and working in remote areas with dependents, I'm always going to choose a manufacturer that gives me the highest chance of survival and the ability to continue on my adventure and that is without a doubt, Toyota.
