Landing At Bancroft CNW3 You Can't See The Runway - Glen's Hangar
I knew that when I started posting these flying videos that it would bring out all sorts of negative comments from the armchair pilots. But this video seems to have triggered all sorts of people who keep telling me that my altitude and pattern here are sloppy.
Most of those comments I've deleted - One thing I've learned after having multiple successful RU-vid channels since 2007 is that when a commenter uses foul language and starts hurling insults... I just delete them. My life is too short to bothered by online trolls who can't manifest a civil conversation, with somewhat complete sentences.
As for this particular landing: One of the things that you should learn as a pilot is how to fly the 'perfect' circuit. Perfect altitude, distance, and heading in the downwind. Perfect power transition, speed control, and squared off turn into the base leg. Perfect glide, descent, speed and power control on final. Which is great when you are landing at the perfect airport on a large flat piece of land, with perfect sight-lines, no obstacles, and perfectly aligned runways for the wind and weather conditions - maybe even throw in ATC to help you along.
But life and flying aren't perfect. An even more important lesson to learn is how to read the airport. They aren't all the same. They don't all have great sight lines, and runways that are aligned for the wind. As a pilot you need to know when to say - "I need to be farther / closer, higher / lower, faster / slower". As a pilot you need to know when to fly a pattern that isn't a perfect box.
You need to know how and when to adjust, and not just blindly adhere to what was written in your flight manual or drilled into your head by a CFI.
Bancroft is one of those airports - if you fly the 'perfect circuit' you will end up the star of a @blancolirio video... or worse; end up on @Probable Cause: Dan Gryder
One other thing - you can't judge distance, altitude, or speed from edited GoPro footage. The lenses distort and compress elements of the image to the point that it's just impossible.

I'm semi local to Bancroft (a few minutes out if town and frequently use the atv trail (the trail at the end of the runway that you flew over as you landed) and I love watching y'all land. I'm hoping to get my ppl at some point in my life and do that landing at some point in time. I'm glad I found this video so I could see Bancroft from y'alls view. If you ever come again I recommend eating at The Granite (a little pricey but one of the best places in Bancroft to dine at). If you come and need a ride there so you don't have to walk/use a taxi I'd be more than glad to give you a ride given I'm free.

That was cool that you landed, planted a couple of cameras, took off, landed again to collect the cameras, then reversed the landing and the takeoff in your final product. Great production.

🚧🚧 You can put aluminum foil as a sun shield above your camera, it work great to keep the heat inside in cold temperature -20c so it should help to keep the heat OUT from the sun 😇👌👍Outstanding landing Sir 👍👌🧐Cheers 🍻🍻🚧🚧

I really enjoyed this video. It was interesting to me that you and Julie started out in forestry. I have been a tree seed collector for 34 years now and go to bancroft every autumn to collect conifer cones. It was fun to see it all from the air.

Great vid! CNW3 is tricky for sure. You did a great job coming in to land and I’m sure it will help other pilots attempting to land on 30 for the first time. I’m a member of the Bancroft Flying Club and fly the 172 (parked on the grass in your video). CNW3 is my favourite place to fly. Hope you can make it out for the pancake breakfast this year!

We have a airport here just across the Michigan line where there is a tree tunnel that I use to go to alot. The wind at the end of those trees can surprise you for sure. Nice flight Glen.

Most days it's pretty orderly and easy to navigate, even though it can be busy. ATC is always really helpful and understanding; I've heard pilots call out that they've never been there and ATC will spend some extra time with them.

Reminded me of learning to fly in Port Hardy BC back in the early 80s. Ex-WWII airbase. One 10,000-foot runway and a smaller cross runway. Usually used the big runway but once in a while the winds favored the smaller runway. This runway had a hill at one end that was just high enough that you could not see the runway on final. You would have to clear the hill with enough altitude to be able to make corrections to get lined up but then you also had to dump altitude as soon as you could see the runway. I don't believe that runway is maintained anymore.

Glen, I’ve watched your videos since you began renovating the 172. A thoroughly enjoyable journey to follow, while home here in Ireland. ☘️ This video was particularly enjoyable. From the interesting approach, to the colourful scenery. Separately, someone should tell the pilot of GHZJ that using the words ‘Take-Off’ over the R/T while another aircraft is on the runway is not how it’s done. It tends to give other pilots ‘the jitters’ and with good reason. ‘Ready for Departure’ is far more appropriate . Anyhow, thanks for bringing us along. Looking forward to the next flight.

Wild blueberries are amazing. I was so sad as a kid nearly 30 years ago when the wild blueberry bush on the street I lived was removed for a house. I have memories of picking blueberries and having blueberry pancakes for lunch/dinner.

I don't know how this video slipped past my attention, Glen! That was a really *great* flight into Bancroft - I wasn't even aware that there *was* an airstrip there! The aerial view of the streets brought back memories of driving through Bancroft on the way to my Wife's cottage near Barry's Bay. Imagine my excitement when you suggested flying on to that destination!! I hope you do, in a future video, and perhaps you could do a flyover of Paugh Lake, and the island therein? That's where our cottage is. Sorry I'm late, but THANK you for the flight!

Great video... you flew directly over my lake, Vanluven Lake... as a former pilot I never realised how difficult it can be for this small airport... the pancake breakfasts are great... would love to still fly, but diabeties has greately affected my senses... miss flying, but life continues..

Bancroft reminds me of landing to the north left base visual at South Lake Tahoe airport AA/AirCal 737-200 in the early 90’s before the FAA pulled out tower operators and closed down commercial ops. Could not see the runway until base to final turn.

So...for devices on the dash, I've been using a mylar bubble wrapper that some frozen meds came in. Extremely effective at protecting a Garmin GLO2 from over heating and the device can read the satellites through it. Check a postal outlet or a pharmacy and see if you can snag a used one. I cut the bag in half giving me a sleeve with two open ends and it works very well...hot days it's still cool to the touch inside the sleeve!

G,day Glen from Sydney Australia. Some great images, and I was really impressed with the camera angle location RWY grass area. Forestry and mapping. I believe LiDAR mapping is currently best practice; as * It shows density, height and species. In Australian conditions, the Eucalyptus Gums vaporise flammable gases and generate embers transported by wind. 🌏🇭🇲

LiDAR mapping makes sense - back when we were doing it, there wasn't even GPS (reliable GPS in a handheld package) we did everything with a compass and a chain.

I have a video production question Glen. How did you go about getting the "from the ground" POV shots of you landing and taking off from Bancroft Airport? Did you have to land, then set up the camera and then take off and land again, or did you have a friend in Bancroft record the landing and take off then send it to you later? Or perhaps something else? Regardless, it really added to the presentation. Well done.

A number of GA RU-vid creators do this and they do actually land, set up cameras, and then take off and land again. That gives them the landing and takeoff footage to use as inserts. It's a nice touch, even if it isn't the actual landing or takeoff being portrayed.

@@bodenmaddoxmain That's what I suspected. It's quite a bit of extra work, but it makes for a very professional production. (Very understandable in Glen's case as he's been a video pro for decades) But I do wonder if they have some concern that while they're taking off and landing someone will make off with their expensive camera equipment.

I remember a plane at our local airport that was a tight squeeze in the hangar. He used big chunks of styrofoam strapped with bungie cords on the wingtips so that if he scraped, he was destroying styrofoam instead of wing.

I was thinking I'd like to stop in there on my way from Carp to Orillia (it's right on the way) so glad I found this video! It looks like a challenging strip! I'm so gonna have to try landing the RV6 there! I also just bought a small USB powered fan to mount up on the top of the panel to keep the GoPro cooler... stay tuned to my channel for that :)

As we expect from a professional, great combination of flying, audiovisual, geography and commentary of the trip. We all marveled at the ground crew being there for the landing and takeoff! I really appreciate the closed captions and charts on the screen. Since I flew as a “steam gauge” pilot with Unicom it takes me a moment to get into the chart and atc audio. On another note, I haven’t heard about the forests of Ontario since I was in grade school in the 1950s. Thx for bringing us along. Ken PS, Did you close the flight plan?

Stuffing myself with wild raspberries on a hillside in Montana was amazing... until I remembered that bears probably enjoy it as much as I was and then it was nerve wracking. From what I saw from your cameras, it looks like for most of the approach to Bancroft, pushing the throttle and climbing away is an option if things get too squirrley - is that about right? (Of course departing narrows the margins.)

I bought these from Mountain Wave Aviation: mountainwaveaviation.com They have a few different models, you just give them your aircraft type and serial number and they'll figure out the exact size.

Not a requirement - It's recommended, in order to facilitate search and rescue but not required.

The requirement is either a flight plan or flight itinerary. The flight itinerary could be just you telling someone you’re heading out though for a flight and you’ll talk to them later.

@@GlensHangar From the video it looked low particularly on final. Traffic pattern altitude recommendations are typically for entry downwind. At airports like this extend the downwind and turn base higher and fly a longer higher final. You can't get too high in that airplane. It can come almost straight down with full flaps.

@@leeoldershaw956 Thanks for your opinion - but your mistake is to make assumptions based on what you see in the video. You cannot judge height or distance from distorted GoPro video footage. I was there, I've flown that approach (based on my logbook entries) at least 30 times in the last 25 years, and I have the logged telemetry data from the Dynon and ForeFlight for this flight. I know how to fly this approach, and I did it within recommended / standard altitudes.

With nothing but trees and houses below, a tighter and/or higher circuit would yield a much better outcome in the event of an engine failure in the circuit. There is no objective right or wrong here but maybe some food for thought. BTW, beautiful video! CNW3 is now on my To Do list.

The fact that go pros are black is dumb AF engineering. If you are making a camera for extreme conditions, it should be white to reflect heat and light, not black to absorb it. Do you know anyone with a cricut machine? have them cut you a vinyl wrap in white for that camera. Thank me later. Love your videos.
