I had always thought that feathering a DT mask actually encouraged it so snap to edges and that increasing the feather radius widened the area that the mask would "Look" at in order to try and find an edge. Always good for me to learn something new.

Thanks for this. Learned quite a bit about darktable in this video. The C key for identifying which parametric method to use best and your technique for enhancing bland skies will come in particularly useful. Thanks :)

A useful tip I would add when using drawn or drawn & parametric masks: after drawing the mask(s) clicking the 'show & edit mask functions' icon to turn it off, as well as hiding the mask outline, prevents accidental editing of the mask shape and opacity. A specific drawn mask can have the opacity reduced or increased by selecting the mask in the mask manager and mouse scrolling whilst holding the Ctrl key. Using a mask with multiply blend mode is also a favourite method of mine to improve a bland sky 😀. Nice demonstration of dt's excellent, very powerful masking and a very pleasing final result showing much more detail. I have picked up a few tips. Thank you.

Certainly a great tutorial with your techniques. One recommendation, however, perhaps you might want to not whisper too much, I found myself adjusting the video volume too often. thanks!

@@randpresley1666 thanks Rand. I was quiet in this one - if you check out my other videos you'll hopefully find the audio gets progressively better as I got a better mic and learned how to use OBS more effectively!

If you are interested in feed back, here it is: Small edge sensitive retouch operations are often easier done with the clone tool over the healing tool in the Retouch module. The healing tool by nature includes remains of the things we want to go away, and it can be a pain - as you demonstrated. The feathering of a drawn mask will be sufficient for the blending. A "average viewer" standard is not really interesting. I can't help circling around the lens spot? to the left of the tree. It can be reduced to invisible with a new instance of Color calibration and a circular diffuse mask while using Grey and a blend mode like you did for the sky. Remember you can adjust the density of a drawn mask by pointing at it and holding down Ctrl while decreasing/increasing the density with the mouse wheel. To my taste the subtle details in the splash of the fall - and the vertical streaming lines - are essential to bring the fall alive. I would exaggerate the whiteness without increasing the contrast. The edge of the mountain against the sky is still not ideal. I would work further with that transition. I think you would too, if this editing wasn't a presentation limited by time and the communication via YT. Otherwise, a very good image with a lot of potential. And you demonstrated a way to use the new Enlarge canvas module. Some DT users have received it with some skepticism. I welcome any new module as a new tool in my tool box. Unfortunately the 4.8.0 manual has not been released yet. I hope the manual will explain more about this module.

At one point you go into CAT module and bump up the Red channel in the grey tab to put some drama into the sky What is the thinking behind that ?
