On this adventure, I explore the EPIC Cairngorms National Park, discover some fantastic new locations for landscape photography near Aviemore, freak out as I discover that ticks have swarmed my dog, fend off hordes of hungry midges while photographing the stunning Loch Morlich, watch as Storm Alex passes over the enormous Cairngorm Mountain Plateau and for the first time ever, I have to leave Coops behind.
An epic experience in the Scottish Highlands full of ups and downs - like all great adventures with my camera - and yes, I still use a DSLR in 2022 🤭

Have you ever had bad experiences with Ticks or have you got a favourite memory from the Cairngorms? I’d love to hear about them!

My misses went for a pee in a hedge... shortly after noticed the biggest ticks you have ever seen crawling up her legs... about a dozen.. Eeeerrrrr... bluddy gross things... still haunted by the size of them... Make me shudder just thinking about it! In Scotland of course..

🤒🤒🤒 I shouldn't be, but I'm laughing! Me and the Mrs were camping in Glen Rosa (Arran) a few years back and the midges were absolutely horrendous, clouds of them. I was p*shing myself laughing as she attempted to go for a pee before bed and I eventually had to stand guard with a flamethrower made from a deodorant can 😂 ...didn't help!

I lived in Phoenix, Arizona, U.S.A.... the ticks were absolutely horrible, all the time, everywhere. Now I'm in Michigan, and this year, they are really bad here; not sure why. When my daughter finds a tick, on a dog or a kid, she picks them off and puts them in a ziploc bag; I have no idea what that's about. Poor Coops, thank goodness you were paying attention. You got some beautiful shots. Thanks for sharing.

I apologize for being off topic...is it possible for an update on the tent after using it few times..... Any more mods you can think of ? Thanks very much... Excellent videos 👍

@@NotASheep100 that’s ok mate, always happy to help! What sort of updates? There wasn’t any wild camping on this trip as it was a wee family holiday. Hoping to get back onto the Arran also very soon for a proper wild camp in the Hexpeak 👌🏻 Regarding mods, I might have found a super lightweight 3 season inner (100g) - but I haven’t had a chance to measure everything before buying it. It’s a sea to summit bug net inner 😯

Hi Rich, thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed it! The ticks... aye, they are despicable wee creatures. I've only ever had two, but they give me the heeby jeebies! Coops isn't phased, though I may have developed PTSD from that long night in the bathroom haha!!

Love the video. We went out to Long Island in Roaringwater Bay, Co Cork 10 days ago and yep the dogs came back covered in ticks. They seem unphased, we were horrified! Still have great memories from my first trip up the Cairngorms in the 1980's, we went up for the wildlife and saw dotterel, snow bunting, ptarmigan and best of snowy owl, loved the place.

Thanks David, I appreciate that! It doesn't seem to be faring well in terms of views or reach, but f*ck it, I like it too! Argh! It never seems to get any easier to pull them off, I'm always a bit sickened by them, literally no redeeming factor when it comes to ticks! That sounds amazing, I've a photographer friend from near me that swears by the 'Gorms for the wildlife & I cut the spoken section out of this video, but while up there I had the pleasure of seeing various frogs, insects (the wood ant nests are incredible!), woodpeckers, cuckoos, dragon/damselflies, owls and even my very first pine marten! I couldn't believe it! 😀

Ticks 🤢🤢🤢 Your Loch Morlich scenes with the midges brought back favourite !!! memories lol 😆 We were married up in Grantown on Spey 25 years ago in July and had a timeshare in Coylumbridge which meant we were there every year for our anniversary. One year hubby decided that rather than go for a lovely anniversary meal, we would take a picnic (plain bread bacon sandwiches but that’s another story !) down to Loch Morlich …well I think you’ll know the outcome ….picnic and wine all set out when a tsunami of midges descended…OMG..never seen anything like it ….picnic ended up in the car and back to lodge 😳😳😳. Your photos are crackers as usual Scott 😊

Hahaha! I'm quite partial to midge flavoured food myself 😅 I know the feeling though, they can definitely ruin a good time if you're unprepared - I don't know how many times I've done the angry dance until I finally gave in and bought gloves/nets. The googles are just so I can see my camera 🤔 Thanks for watching! 🙂

I watched 1 of your videos a few months ago and not seen anything since, I have hit the bell now 🤣. Some great pictures well done. A great decision not to climb up to the top Cairngorms I think the weather was bad enough where you were. ATB Gus

Fantastic Scott! Absolutely stunning images. I bet the loch morlich shot needed some spot removal with that cloud of midges. Seems all the beasties are out in force this year! Cheers, Kris.

Hi Kris, thanks for watching 😃 Thankfully not, this was a long exposure and there was no directional light to back light them, the normal exposures though, are covered in them whizzing by 😅

@@outlawedlandscapes I suppose they can be forgiven for just the biting then, as long as they don't mess with the images! Thanks for reminding me to buy a new midge net before I go on holiday too!! 😄

A great video and some superb photographs. A bit "hairy" coming off the hill I'll warrant! I'm glad Coops wasn't phased by the ticks and quickly recovered from his ordeal. Made my stomach churn. So you have another inner for your V4A? Hope you can do a review soon. Cheers. Ken

Thanks Ken, I appreciate it! Glad you enjoyed it. Aye, I got down just in time before it kicked right off, amazing what a wee bit of height can do in terms of weather.. I don't have a new inner yet, but on the way home I found a super lightweight bug net by Sea To Summit, 240g. I need to get the measurements and see if it could work with the Hex - it's only £20-30! Edit; the 'Nano Net' isn't going to work as it's too wide.

Nice edited video & audio. Try placing something in Foreground..wide angles are sweet but flat otherwise. Foreground interest shows scale, depth of field & walks you through an image. Try it & let me know. 👍

Hi mate, are you referring to the photography? If so, I’ve spent long enough working with the standard “rules” of composition and I’m currently freeing up my mind by shooting more open images - I just haven’t shown much of my work on my channel so far 😉👍🏻

To me its quite off putting which is a shame because I do love the outdoors, the natural thing would be cover up and make a fire but even that can be dangerous and I don't wanna be that guy that causes a massive wildfire so for that Scott I "doff my cap" because you are a stronger guy than me or just crazy I can't make up my mind haha.
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Haha, aye, I always say that no matter what the weather, there's going to be something in the way. The best days are the crisp, clear winters days with perfect visibility, a wee nip in the air and nice crunchy vegetation under your feet! The Cairngorms are very sensitive to wildfires, so I'd defo never be lighting anything. You do get wee anti mosquito gadgets now - but I haven't tried any. It's just part and parcel of being out the house and enjoying the outdoors 😀
