The Luxe Hexpeak v4a is a lightweight hexagonal pyramid (or teepee) tent that is said to withstand some seriously bad weather and in this video, I hike into Galloway for an exposed solo wild camp in the hills to see how it performs in real world conditions after a scary night in the Lanshan 2. I also discuss some of the wild camping equipment that I use on my adventures - since I always forget to show you while filming!
On the day, the skies were full of low altitude cloud so I opted to camp on slightly lower ground to avoid any high winds prevalent above 700m and to avoid getting clagged in and being left without anything to photograph. This particular location (Cornish Hill) is a great wee spot to leave the real world behind and escape for while!

Hi Dave, thanks for watching 🙂 It’s a fantastic wee spot for when the weather is a bit iffy on the main hills, hoping to get back the summits when things cool off a bit - especially with the Hexpeak! It’s a serious bit of kit, with lots of options for inners / bivvying etc. Bit of a steep learning curve when pitching but I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it soon enough 😊

It's a cracking area down there and just rugged enough and remote enough that the masses stay away, although getting more popular. That does look a spacious tent and a nice idea on the silver mat I might adopt for Sid (our JRT). Having space is what its all about and after the few weeks I've had / having I can't wait to get back out. Take care good fellow and looking forward to seeing more of your outings.

The tent is smashing, really looking forward to getting onto some proper summits with it 😍 Would defo recommend the material, it’s very lightweight and packable, but very well insulated. Great Vid, I am a big fan of the hex peak, I have been using it for a while and am really happy with it. Apart from the palacial porch, my other favorite feature is that when the weather is really bad, you can pack up everything except the outer and pegs from within the tent, which is amazing.

Good thing is, the fly is 660g, the stock inner is 684g - so depending on whether you either want to use the fly as a simple shelter with no inner, or get a lighter inner (Lanshan 1) there is some serious weight to be lost 👌🏻

@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Hi Gordon, thanks for watching! When I was researching the tent, my main concern was the size of the inner. I opted just to go with the Luxe 1.5p & it works very well, however, I have been looking at the inners on ali as they seem to be a good few hundred grams lighter! Once I've used the tent a few times I'll know what will work & there are plenty of options out there :D I love that the inner can be unhooked and dropped when not in use, the size is incredible!!
@whenigotothemountains1203
@whenigotothemountains1203 2 года назад
@@outlawedlandscapes yep you could even use it out with midge season without an inner which is great for size. The asta inners fit perfectly however the “4 season” ones with solid walls only have mesh at the very top so you can’t see out. I’ve got 3 variants depending on what I want! Gordon

@@whenigotothemountains1203 Excellent to hear, from what I've seen the Asta inners have the doors on the right as opposed to the left, are these the ones you mean? 4 season 1.5 just over 400g (200g saving) 4 season 2p around the same weight as the Luxe inner, with space left for a vestibule. The latter might be my choice for winter camps!

Thanks for watching! Aye, a single pole if it can be extended between 135mm and 140mm, if not backpacking light do a joint piece called 'the missing link' depending on the type of pole you use (this is what I have). @outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Yes, definitely! I'm waiting on a four season inner coming to block out the wind a bit more (especially handy for when the winds are subzero) & I'm excited to see how well it sheds snow. There are videos out there of the Hexpeak in deep snow over in the states & obviously I'm based in the UK where snow drifts aren't quite as mental, but the shape should allow any snow build up to just roll off. Something else I'm interested in, is pitching it to the ground - how much that will stop spin drift, how it will insulate from the freezing winds and how much condensation will arise from that. Every tent I've had so far has frozen inside and out - but I'm not so worried about condensation in a deep freeze, as it ices over as opposed to dripping.

I'm trying to decide between the minipeak xl and the onetigris ironwall since I'd like to be able to use a stove. Most of the videos show these tents being used lower down, obviously where the wood is. But my question is, do you think these tents could take the kind of battering they'd get in the Lake District and Scotland? I really like the idea of going up higher but then coming down to dry your kit and warm up. I too have the Lanshan 2 Pro so I really felt for you in your earlier video. Oh yeah, also what about the hexpeak winter version with the snowflaps? looks like you could really nail that one down. Thanks mate.
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Hi Mate, After the Lanshan failed, I went into full research mode in search of something that would suit my needs in terms of a) space for me & the dog, especially on the long winter nights, b) Strength / weatherability in rough conditions & c) within my budget. I haven't had the chance to really test the v4a on summits as of yet, but I've had it pitched in the garden in very high winds and really heavy rain for days at a time & it's been solid. The only thing I've had to do was retension the tie outs as the silnylon stretches a bit in heavy rain. My main research was finding wind tests & seeing folks posts on forums/fb groups & the general consensus is that these things handle the wind like a boss (talking50/60mph)! In terms of the winter model, I didn't find that until after I'd purchased the standard. The snow skirts would be handy to have, but I pitch as low to the ground as possible & in snow I reckon the fly will cut in anyway. I'm currently looking into 4 season 2p inners for the winter, as there's no point having all that space if half of it is wet/snowy ground. I'll be doing a video very soon focused on everything v4a, I want it to be as comprehensive as possible as the info can be pretty hard to find online without digging deep. In terms of Luxe/One Tigris, I've never tried the latter, but the build quality/material of the v4a is superb. The support offered by Bob over at Backpackinglight.co.uk is excellent too, whilst there is chat/rumours of OT being pretty scummy as a company. Hope this answers your question :D
@jimjam3877
@jimjam3877 2 года назад
@@outlawedlandscapes Thanks a lot for that. Based on what you've said, I think I'm leaning towards the F6e winter model because I'd like the stove jack, although apparently, this option isn't available in the UK so I'll have to get it from the LuxeOutdoor site. No worries. The footprint starts to get a little large but looking at the Lanshan, that's not exactly small, either. Every thing's a trade off, isn't it? I look forward to a video on the v4A and thanks again, mate.
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
@@jimjam3877 Fantastic! I'll have an abridged version of my wind test up shortly, so you should be able to get a good idea of it's performance. I think the F6E is HUGE!! Also, I believe the stove conversion does require it to be sent away. Aye, I'd thought about that as well, going from the OEX Phoxx 1 & 2 where you can slot them into tiny spaces then the Lanshan was a bit of a jump. You do have to be careful in terms of pitch choice with a mid, but the good thing with the Hexpeaks (not sure if others do it) is that you can position the inner to suit. Main video will take a wee while as I don't want to miss any details, but the wind test will be up soon :)

@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
Hi Adrian, thanks for watching :) What are your thoughts on the tent? I've made a couple of wee mods (video coming soon) just to help it out. I'm hoping to get a 4 season 2p inner for the winter, as I don't want to add any more weight by adding a groundsheet to the list - snow on the ground isn't great for storing things, haha! So far I'm pleased with it, I actually like the stuff sack as it packs down very small compared to my last bag & I've been warm enough in it. I was hoping to replace my 4 season snug pack with the OEX Leviathan, as it's half the weight and the ratings are very similar. Hard to find good reviews on it though :o
@adrian_baker
@adrian_baker 2 года назад
@@outlawedlandscapes that's good to hear, I look forward to the mods video. I think for winter I'm going to drop the height of the flysheet and have no inner. I have some tarps from a website with eyelets in them. I want to try staking that out and then putting the tent over this. Don't know how but I will try a way 😂. I know that the Luxe 2p inner is majority 80% mesh, but that floor will be great for winter. It has a little hole with a tall wall that can be cinched tight around your walking pole. I think that's the bag my old man has, he thinks it's good if I remember correctly. For winter I will still use my MW Everest down extreme! Great bag. Think it's about £130 on Amazon for now too
@outlawedlandscapes
@outlawedlandscapes 2 года назад
I generally pitch my tents as close to the ground as possible, I've found that if you give the tie outs 6 inches with a pole height of 135/140 that gets you to the ground. I'd like to try just a groundsheet as well, the only problem with that is you don't get the additional shelter/insulation from the inner. Would be a massive weight saving though, maybe using a survival bag would work? I was looking at the inners on AliExpress, 600g and full nylon. It's a cracker of a bag, but at 2.1kg it's a fucking tonne weight to be humphing with other winter kit :o I'll have a look and see, Big Agnes do something similar at around £150 as well
@adrian_baker
@adrian_baker 2 года назад
@@outlawedlandscapes You're right, I like what Robin Wallace does with the trailstar and survival bag duo. Maybe try that at one point. The bag is heavy yeah, but I put it in a 3fUL gear compression sack and it packs down nice, but the weight still sucks. Hoping to get a thermarest NEOair Max soon when the wages come in and possibly a lighter bag. I like RSs bag the SeaToSummit Spark 3 but that's like £400 from what I've seen. A little bit much for just now 😂

@@adrian_baker Cash is the obstacle eh, haha! I've decided to live with my 700g Sea to Summit mat, it's absolutely roasting and pretty small in terms of packability. Robin has been a great help to me, we actually did a big walk and I didn't film it (see his Rhinns of Kells video).
