Thanks Todd, after a great bit of digging through the weeds I expect to put in an order with Canham for this same 8x10 in August, so it was really great to see it in action! I had read that the movements were a bit different and took some getting used to but after watching your review I feel even more confident in the decision. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

The only thing that’s really different and that you have to get used to a bit is how the focus locks. Other than that it’s great.

@GreggObst

One other advantage that the Canham wood field cameras all have is that 7 inch rear shift allows you to do multi-frame side-by-side diptychs and triptychs by shifting the rear without affecting the focus. It adds a layer of creative options. Another shout out to Dan Stone at Stone Photo Gear. He improved on previous designs, made them even more durable and versatile in the field and he continually innovates for the Large Format community. I have his film holder cases for 4x5, 5x7, 4x10 and 8x10 and his lens cases for the Linhof sized boards as well as the larger 6x6 boards. He also makes a really nice belt pouch for the Pentax Digital Spotmeter. Top quality, American made products made by hand.

@@toddkorolphoto I only had to replace the bellows on mine. And the extension rail isn't a perfect match, which makes it hard to use. But then again those new bellows don't have the same draw as the old ones. For portraits it's fine, and with both rear tilt and swing I imagine it would work well for landscapes, too. Yours will look very nice next to that Korona 5 x 7.

What a helpful video Todd! The photographs were excellent. The last one with the light reflecting of the bark of the trees was a great photograph. I really appreciate you taking the time in the studio to explain the camera. I am very comfortable with 35mm and 120 film but I know so little about large format it is embarrassing. My wife and I both thought the black walnut made that camera a work of art. She doesn’t know a thing about large format and a few times she commented on the beauty. I agreed. As others mentioned I appreciate you making these videos. I hope I don’t sound like a broken record in my comments but thank you. I look forward to the next one. I sure hope I don’t get bit by the large format bug … I’m too poor!! 😀

One of the “oddities” I remember experiencing as an advertising photographer frequently using large format cameras was that upside down and backwards on the ground glass became NOT upside down and backwards. As we all know from 8th grade science our eyes see exactly the same thing as a view camera. Our brains make the switch! Somehow mine found a work around to where I did not really think of it as upside down…but rather “normal”. Early on I would make the effort to invert my head….which doesn’t work very well…..
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto Год назад
Yes indeed. I love looking at the ground glass, you slow down more and think. Also, there is the experiment with the glasses that make everything upside down, after people wore them for 30 mins, their brain switched it to right side up. Crazy, but cool. 👍

The camera looks very nice and well made. I particularly like the long strut that supports the backstandart high up. I would also like to have a longer strut for the front standard. Great video Todd! When you were carrying the camera off the tripod, I was wondering "Man, that must be a really light 8x10 for him to carry like that" then you said it was 9 lbs...and I looked at my V8, and just thinking about it's weight. How sturdy would you say the front standard is? I have a Super Angulon 165mm (aka the boat anchor), and the Dorff handles it well, but I would like to shed some pounds in the future, so I've been looking around at replacements. It's hard finding videos with anyone talking about 8x10s other than a Chamonix or an Intrepid.
@toddkorolphoto
@toddkorolphoto 2 года назад
The front standard locks down tight, I don't think you'd have a problem with it at all. The body is just over 9 pounds, I think a big reason is the aerospace aluminum.

@toddkorolphoto
