What a great idea! We did just that. Take a look: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fI7Y66XS2ro.html Erosion control with Dirt Lockers®. Thriving plants 1 year later in New York.
Florida landscaper here, I have two questions. What’s the lifetime of the plastics in Direct Sun and how do the deal with saltwater? Plastic’s don’t last long in Florida, they get brittle and crumble.
Hello, sorry for the late reply, I wasn't getting notifications. The plastic is treated with UV inhibitor, with direct sunlight all day, they will last at least 10 years. It doesnt crumble like ABS will. They should be set up with plants that will extend the life further. Salt water has absolutely no effect on this plastic.
I assume those are the large dirtlocker. If so, how much of that white rock was needed per dirtlocker to create the stepping path? The rocks look similar to marble chips. Essentially, I am tryinto figure the volume of that type of rock I would need to create something similar.
Yes, Large Dirt Lockers were used. We filled up most of the Dirt Lockers with soil. Then, we put landscape fabric down to keep the rocks from going into the soil. Next we put a few inches of the white rock, probably ½ cubic foot per Dirt Locker step.
Nope! Our Dirt Lockers are made from 100% recycled HDPE plastic which can withstand temps as cold as -58° and as hot as 160°. To read more about their durability, please see our FAQ page here: www.dirtlocker.com/faq
My husband and I are currently building our home in central Florida. Our property is on a hill and as such the front of the the home has a pretty noticeable slope. We have been researching ways to address this issue and came across your videos. Would this system work well for our property? How would we be able to determine this?
Hi Carmen, please visit our website estimator (www.dirtlocker.com/estimator) and FAQ pages to get everything you need for your project area. If you still need assistance, please email us photos and measurements to info@DirtLocker.com.
Hello, dirt locker is a great idea. I’m thinking to put a stairs case on my back yard , it’s a slop about 50 degree, and the slop lasts 20-25 feet. Do u think dirt locker will work in this situation ? That means I build single column instead of an area ?
We don't recommend using the Dirt Locker just for stairs, as you need to plant at least 30% of your Dirt Locker system for optimal efficiency. So you can certainly set up a wider staircase and plant along the outsides of your zig zag stair case. Check out our FAQ page for more on this. www.dirtlocker.com/faq
@@pohil42 No we didn't, we have only just moved into our new build but part of me wishes I did because working on the slope with all the rain we've been having has been a challenge.
HOW LONG WILL THE DIRT LOCKER® LAST? + Technically, forever! High Density Polyethylene (HDPE, which the Dirt Locker® is made of) is not biodegradable and does not break down over time. They are also created with a 10-year UV inhibitor. The original prototypes were in place for 11 years with only mild fading. Additionally, since the Dirt Locker® is designed to grow and sustain plants, ideally, they will be providing shade, thus substantially increasing the life of the Dirt Locker®. Dirt Lockers come with a 5-year replacement warranty; however, it is void if not installed per our official Dirt Locker® Installation instructions emailed to you after your purchase. We stand by our product in the harshest winters (-58F/-50C) and hottest summers (+160F/+60C). The Dirt Locker® is made from 100% recycled High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) so the material is very durable and will not crack due to the elements. Check out this chart to see how the Dirt Locker® protects plants all year round! Additionally, Dirt Locker® is flame retardant by nature, however, HDPE starts to melt at 235°F so although these are not fire hazards, they are not resistant to forest fires. The HDPE UL rating is UL 94 HB: horizontal slow burning with a burning rate of less than 76mm/min and burning stops before 100mm. UV radiation: although ours are treated with 10 year UV inhibitor, if the system is sufficiently planted where it is shaded from the plants, the UV exposure is minimal.
Did you see the 1 year later video? We will happily send you updated photos. Please request them by emailing info@dirtlocker.com as we can't post photos on RU-vid. Feel free to visit our Instagram or Facebook for more photos examples.
The toxins and chemicals from old tires is not something you want leaching into your plants or soil. Our product is made of HDPE which is the same material they use for food grade cutting boards.
Underestimating the curve on the slope, we originally networked the DirtLockers all together and blanketed the hillside. Due to curvature, we realized we would need to install individual rows of DirtLockers, not all networked together
The Dirt Locker system is secured with J hooks. Not every Dirt Locker in the system gets a J hook, there are several factors to consider when installing your system. You can find the J hook application for various designs on our estimator page on our website by clicking on the brochure.
Do ypu have a landscape contractor here in Vallejo CA? I love tour product and would like to do it on my slope for an easy climb for my mom who loves to garden. Thanks
these are made from HDPE which is a durable material that will last for a lifetime (think of everyday kitchen cutting boards, they are durable!) We also add a UV inhibitor so you can place these in the sunniest climates and not worry about cracking!

The price will vary depending on the size of your project (which will determine Dirt Locker & J hook quantity), the slope angle (which will determine the model), and then choose the color you want. Yes, our products is made of 100% HDPE, the plastic that sticks around forever, hence the reason we use it. We want this plastic out of our landfills and oceans. We repurpose it to solve erosion problems by stabilizing a hill to create vegetable and flower gardens! You can be sure the product will last as well :)
We are working on it! In the meantime, you can order directly from our new website store with free shipping in continental USA. www.dirtlocker.com/buy-dirt-locker
