I've always admired Lang Lang but could never relate to him until I saw him playing this piece. Most of his performances sound and look like something I could never do, but this was one of the first songs I learned when I was a young student. I still don't have it mastered (because I don't practice enough). Like him, I am also a big fan of C Major songs! Ha! P.S. Looks like I have been playing the "dry" version all these years.

Kuhlau is sadly often pooh-poohed as a composer, because most people, even most classical musicians, know him only through his 19 piano sonatinas, but he also wrote 19 full-blown piano sonatas, and some of these are quite complex and challenging. A new four-volume edition of them was published in Japan a few years back, and I managed to pick these up in Tokyo. I'm especially fond of his three op. 26 sonatas--which have never been recorded or put on RU-vid, a fact which just blows me away, considering their quality. The first of these is also relatively simple, but very high-speed (Molto allegro and a relentless Prestissimo, a "perpetuum mobile"); it's the most "manic" sonata I've ever encountered. The second and third are technically very, very demanding, and their slow movements are gorgeous. But Kuhlau was under pressure from the various publishers in his region to write simple piano pieces, because they sold well; his op. 127 sonata was written early, but he never got it published in his lifetime because the publishers thought it too difficult. It's likely that he had actually written a lot more than we'll ever know about, because his house went up in flames, together with all of his scores and unpublished stuff. He died not long after, probably from the effects of smoke inhalation. As a child, my first introduction to sonatinas and sonatas included Kuhlau, of course, and these were my favorites among the other "usual suspects." As an adult, I stopped playing the piano for twenty years (constant moving), and then picked it up again, so when I wanted to "get my fingers back," I went on a steady diet of Czerny and Kuhlau for a while.

Thomas Smith, I totally agree with you. Maybe it's a sort of neglectance, maybe more the fact, that these sonartas are unknown to most people. They contains however great musicality, clever and unpredictable moments, that frequently are ahead of Kuhlau's time. The op. 30 sonata i B flat major and the op. 8a, the op 34 and the op. 127 are great too, but perhaps the op. 46 sonatas and among them the op. 46, no. 2 i d minor - fantasy sonata - it's catching melodic themes has almost "ear-hanger" quality - could and should pave the way for Kuhlau's piano sonatas. I was thrilled when I first heard op. 46 no. 2 i the mid 70's played by John Damgaard Madsen. And there's the piano quartets, the piano concerto with it's irresistible opening rondo-theme in the finale. Not to forget all his ouvertures and flute music. Lang lang is actually doing a very "good job" here and he gets amazing things out the op. 20 sonatine. That alone should make it obviously why Kuhlau is NOT a neglectable composer.
@thomassmith3841
@thomassmith3841 Год назад
@@nielscarlsen2743 Niels, I'm also quite fond of the op. 46, no. 1 Sonata, especially the "Alla polacca" rondo movement; I find the op. 46, no. 2 Sonata is very much an imitation of Beethoven's op. 13. Just two weeks ago, I took delivery of the three "Piano Variations" volumes from a Danish dealer, and I've only done a quick run-through of the first volume. The last of the six sets of "Easy Variations" (op. 42) is actually rather challenging but highly enjoyable, the op. 12 variations are gorgeous but brutally difficult ... so much here that remains undiscovered. I notice that on WorldCat, even very few music libraries have these volumes. Why? It's beyond me.

That would put Kuhlau pretty much at the apex, and perhaps top 3 in any list of musical composers. Kuhlau would probably not make it into my top 1000. Not sure why Lang Lang is wasting his time on this facile trivia.
@BenjaminAnderson21
@BenjaminAnderson21 2 года назад
@@elaineblackhurst1509 Khulau was known as "the Beethoven of the flute" for his incredible mastery in composing for the instrument, despite not knowing how to play it himself. IMO he absolutely does deserve to be honored alongside the other giants of the classical era such as Hayden, Clementi and Mozart. He was a master of both chamber music and keyboard composition, and his music has an emotional richness that almost sounds remniscent of more romantic composers such as Beethoven himself.
@elaineblackhurst1509
@elaineblackhurst1509 Год назад
@@BenjaminAnderson21 If you enjoy Kuhlau, that’s great and nobody’s business but your own; as for your analysis above, you’ve placed a pigeon amongst the eagles. (Neither is Clementi an eagle, but at least he’s not a pigeon as well). Got to say also, it’s quite difficult to take seriously the comments of someone who cannot spell *Haydn* correctly.
