Today we try the language challenge Urdu Vs Persian (Farsi) and came across many similarities between the two languages. This maybe due to the fact that both Urdu and Persian are classified as Indo-European languages.

Amir Tavassoly we used Chasm as chasme bad door , baran ( rain ) , door ( dar) , water ( oob or obe)... So if you catch Someone from North Of Pakistan, he would be able to pick alot more if you speak slowly.

Ammara Malik hahaha educate yourself a bit about the history of muslims of South Asia. Muslims of South Asia speak many languages, they speak Bengali, Urdu, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tamil, Assamese, bhojpuri, dogri, etc. Urdu is one of the 2 standardized versions of Hindustani which is lingua franca of northern part of the subcontinent and it developed in UP which is in India. The mujahireens brought the language to Pakistan.

@@mortezheidyu470 I'm not saying it is fault of modern day Iranians. But as a pakistani/or Indian this Farsi/Persian language was forced upon our ancestors. Persian wasn't mother tongue of any Indian but it was the only official language of Mughal rule , delhi sultanate. Persian was official language of India for about 500 years or more. That's how we got these words in our language. This happened all around the world. Kings captured new lands and forced their language on them , ruining local culture. But hey it's not of your fault. Moazzam baig .. Allama Iqbal most famous poem is Shikwah and jawab e shikwa which is written in Urdu .. But yeah he wrote in both languages ... @aahan1

I suppose Mozzam was trying to make the point that Persian has a great influence on Urdu. Not just Hazrat Allama Iqbal but Mirza Asadullah Ghalib and other greats of Urdu literature of old school era were expert in Farsi. Maulana Qazi Sajjad Hussain saheb (Late) translated Mathnavi of Maulana Room to Urdu. Mughals, at one stage used to speak only Farsi.

Urdu is an Indian language originated in the current Indian state of Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, it was made famous and official by Delhi Rulers ( not Islamabad Rulers) who used to use Persian as official language before adopting Urdu. Actually *'sheer' (شیر) also means milk in Urdu* but it's rarely used in common or layman speech. Its use is more in *high or sophisticated Urdu.* While 'chashmah' (چشمہ) means goggles/glasses (and was derived from 'chashm'), *'chashm' (چشم) itself means eye in Urdu* but again its use is more in *high Urdu (especially poetry). 'Ainak' (عینک) is also used for goggles/glasses in Urdu.* Some of the other words like 'Keef' (کیف) may also be used in high Urdu for bag but I'm not sure about them. And for those Urdu speakers who don't know, it was Persians who invented the "pe" (پ), "che" (چ), "zhe" (ژ) and "gaf" (گ) letters.

Ashraf Anam: Ainak is very common. Isn't Ainak the word from the letter 'ain' in every Urdu textbook. Sheer for milk is not common but still we call young babies who only drink milk 'sheer khuaar' which means someone who drinks milk so it is not that uncommon in Urdu.

@yastudious9740
@yastudious9740 6 лет назад
I agree with Asad Zaidi. Use of Ainak is common in Urdu, specially if one studied Urdu in Pakistan or Pakistani schools. Same is true for Sheer, Yakh (يخ meaning frozen) etc. Due to globalization/westernization, languages are borrowing words from English; e.g. instead of saying 'kya masala hai', Pakistanis nowadays say 'kya problem hai'. New borrowed words directly/indirectly replace old/local vocabulary. Pop culture too facilitates this phenomenon.

Dast is hand/arm in urdu too as is bazoo/hath. Chashm is a pretty common word for eyes. Chob is a less-common word for wood. If a Pakistani studies Urdu poetry of poets of old like Ghalib, Iqbal, Meer Taqi Meer. They used a lot of Farsi in their verses. These guys i've mentioned are very hard to understand because there's so much layering in their poetry and a lot of abstract things to piece together. Anyone looking to master Urdu should read and study these greats. Also in poets outside of Urdu in Persian like Hafiz, Rumi are amazing too.

To people who had answered to my previous comment: Hindustan is NOT india. Hindustan is a geography. Hindustan refers to the Indo-Gangetic plain, which is located in not just Northern India, but eastern Pakistan as well (Punjab & Sindh). And yes Hindi and Urdu are not languages, they are varieties of Hindustani, the correct name of the language. This name is of Muslim origin referring to the Indo-Gangetic plain. What are you ignorant idiots accusing me of?

Doesn't this Pakistani bro know that ainak is also urdu if chashma is. And sheer is a word of persian we also use. Ever heard 'sheer khuaar' 'milk taking child'. Well, about *sheer* i was guessing : 'meetha' or 'sweet'.. Leevan was unguessable.. Chashm and dast are so easy if you ever read urdu poetry.. But this irani guy was saying it in English accent like.. It's not dast... It's more like dust'.

dast in sanskrit means hand in india . Dast-tane (hand _gloves) . chashm is eyes for example chasm-e-babdoor. sheer is milk- baby milk sheer khuaar. urdu is similar to sanskrit - hindi as well.

Chashm was very easy to guess for your friend since it is used in Urdu as well as in 'Chashm e bad door' (may evil eye be away) or 'chashm nam hona' (eyes being watery/teary). Also, for specs ainak (عينك) is also used along with chashma, so I guess your friend's Urdu is not very on point. Also, if you mentioned the equivalent word of whatever word of one language in the other language, it would be very helpful. Like my whole life I thought chaht was roof in Persian too, because that's what I use when speaking Persian (I'm a Persian speaking Hazara)

What a waste. How couldn't the urdu speaking guy know the meaning of dast and chashm. Daste-e-shifa (the healing hand), dast-e-raast and so many such word are quite common in Kashmir and Pakistan; so is chashm. Has the guy never heard chashm-e-badd-door. Also the word for glasses in urdu is ainak, same as farsi. Chashma that he used his much less common.

Sheer = Ksheer (Sanskrit), Chashm = Chakshu (Sanskrit), Dast = Hast (Sanskrit). A Marathi/Hindi/Bengali/Punjabi/Indian Urdu speaker would've been a better contestant than a Pakistani Urdu speaker. Btw, Sanskrit and Avestan Persian are sister languages.
@aaax332
@aaax332 6 лет назад
vivtube no they would not lol. who really speaks sanskrit and who really speaks avestan persian in todays time? no one lol. those marathi/hindi/bengali/punjabi/"indian urdu"(?) speakers wouldn't be able to find those links unless they'd have studied sanskrit and old persian before hand. there is a much closer link between urdu and new persian and thats just fact
@AshrafAnam
@AshrafAnam 6 лет назад
I don't think so. Yes, Sanskrit and Avestan are sister languages and your comparison is correct but it is impossible for a modern day speaker of any Indic or Iranian language to actually get those words unless they have knowledge of the cognates, which has nothing much to do with modern Indic or Iranian languages.

Actually it's not the similarities between Urdu and Persian. It's simply the Persian words. Urdu language was created by Persians by blending their language with khadiboli language of India. Bear in mind that this Persian was already mixed with a large number of Arabic words due to the Arab conquest and islamization of Persia. But the basic vocabulary and grammar of Urdu is entirely different from Persian. It's the khadiboli language which can't be understood by the Persian. But a Persian speaking guy can definitely recognize the Persian words in Urdu. N.B. The same word is pronounced a little bit differently in Persian and Urdu. For example the word dast دست. The short a is pronounced differently. Likewise the word مادر in Persian it's modar and in Urdu it's maadar. The word دوست. In Persian it's Dust and in Urdu it's dost.

I find lots of comments here which say that they find similar words b/w Urdu and Persian. Well the point is that Urdu is an artificially created language to suit the requirement of invaders from the Arab world. The word Urdu in itself means language of the bunkers. It’s made by mixing of foreign words (from Persian, Arabic, Turkic etc) and Hindi/ Sanskrit language. So the carrier language and it’s grammer is Hindi with words mixed from foreign languages, which includes Persian, and hence common words.

what has pakistani flag to do with urdu(Indian language) Urdu is basically, the base language of hindi + words from arabic , farsi n turkish. Urdu is 100% an indian language developed during 1300-1400 muslim rule in certain parts of india. Urdu as a mother tongue is spoken by more than 100 million indian muslims as opposed to 30-50 million pakistani (indian migrants) with urdu mother tongue. Pakistan shamelessly declared urdu, there national language as opposed to punjabi or pashto or sindhi (these are the three majority spoken languages of pakistan)...... URDU IS AN INDIAN LANGUAGE!
