"Welcome to 'Starting In Te Reo Māori' - Your Gateway to Language Revival and Cultural Reconnection! 🌱
I'm Grant Whitbourne, the founder of this empowering initiative. 'Starting In Te Reo Māori' is more than just a channel; it's a movement dedicated to preserving the enduring legacy of Te Reo Māori, the indigenous language of Aotearoa New Zealand.
My personal journey, originating from Australia but deeply connected to the Te Whānau-a-Apanui heritage, is at the heart of this channel. I intimately understand the challenges that new learners face when embracing a language pivotal to their culture but often shrouded in confusion
Through my transformative experience of reconnecting with Te Reo, I found a profound purpose. Now, as a loving parent, I'm on a mission to pass on this invaluable heritage to my children and create a bridge for others to embark on the same journey.📚

Thank you so much for doing this, I'm an Aussie born Maori too, no whanau to teach me but I've been trying to teach myself ever since my firstborn came along 16 years ago. With no Maori speaking ppl around me I've really struggled with pronouncing what I've learnt, this gives me a much better understanding and I hope to pass it down to my kids ❤

That’s great! I’ve just come back from my first visit to a local Marae very exited to learn the Maori Language and then I’ve found your channel...Thank you very very very much for sharing your knowledge and you passion for Te Reo Māori. I moved from Brazil to NZ only a year ago. It is amazing how the Maori language phonics are similar with the native Brazilians ones. It’s quite easy for me to pronounce them because of the familiarity. That’s making me feel encouraged...I will get there, for sure! Thanks again! Please, keep posting. Cheers! 🤗

Kia Ora Grant. Nga mihi, we are learning a lot of Moteatea at the moment and this video definitley supports the importance of really moving your face to get the syllables, vowels all at once! Good to know it is a thing. I find it really helps me out to get all the words in my mouth and be in sync haha. Mauri ora!

Kia ora e te Grant! Thank you for your videos!! I’ve just started learning Te Reo Māori with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa here in Rāhui Pōkeka. We’ve been learning how to pronounce place names and a few I got hung up on were Te Papaioea and Whangārei. Whangārei because I never knew that the ngā had an elongated vowel. Whenever I’ve heard people say Whangārei I assumed it was a long Whā but its not lol. So it’s been hard in the sense that I’ve had to relearn how to say it properly. Te Papaioea has gotten easier the more I’ve said it and is actually one of my favourite words to say now ☺️.. Anyway, I look forward to getting through all your videos! Thanks again

Kia ora Grant, every time I come in to see what you have brought in to help us with Te Reo, I copy every lesson you type into Utube and what I have now is a file that really helps me at my night class at Nmit. Like I said before, If I have problems grasping a particular part in Te Reo with you, I can pause and replay you to I get it. But not so at Nmit, Once the kaioko has finished explaining what she is writing and then wipes it off, I can't get a replay..Here are a couple of words that I had trouble getting my tongue around. "Ohaoha " bit easier now but when I first used it, was frequently getting it completely wrong like; ahoaho instead. It was used in this introduction of who I am in a pepe before giving my whakapapa.

A good simple way to remember it is to always use "a ia" as opposed to just "ia" after "i" and "ki" Correct: Hoatu tēnā ki a ia Kei te patu au ki a ia I kite au i a ia Incorrect Kei te haere a ia (should be kei te haere ia) Māku a ia e awhina (should be Māku ia e awhina) I moe a ia (should be i moe ia)
