Looks great! I've got a Kowa 6mm C-mount, but it's noticeably soft in the corners. This looks like a much better option. Fairly straightened too.

It seems like a good option since other m43 ultra wides are pretty expensive.

Can we set focal length 7,5mm in gx85? I just can set 8mm minimum focal length

Fantastic as always! I can't wait to see the comparison with the recently announced 7 Artisans wide angle! It's a fish eye, granted, but wondering how useful it'll be considering it's so affordable (less than $200). Do you think you'll cover this lens?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
+Marcos Codas not sure about that lens yet but we'll try ;)
@MarcosCodas
@MarcosCodas 7 лет назад
Mathieu Gasquet, I really hope you can do it. Affordable gear is one of the main attractions of MFT, and if the distortion isn't too bad, it'll make one hell of a lens for the price. I also trust your reviews more than others so I'm hoping to get your opinion on it!

Would you like to compare laowa 7.5mm f/2 and 7 Artisans 7.5mm f/2.8 fish eye ?

Those flares are nowhere near as bad as the ones produced by the Samyang 12mm f2.

Thanks for the great video. How does this compare with the Panasonic/Olympus 7-14's and the new 8-18mm at the wide ends?
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
This might have all the answers: ;-) mirrorlesscomparison.com/micro-four-thirds-lenses/laowa-7-5mm-mft-wide-angle-zooms/ In short, the Laowa is at the same level.

Mathieu Gasquet. Great article. Thanks for that. I've shot architecture and interiors extensively with the Panasonic 7-14 and it's very good, but not great (best correctable distortion characteristics than any other wide angle I've ever used though). What I'd love to see is a native 7 or 8mm prime for sharper shots.
@johngaylord5921
@johngaylord5921 7 лет назад
For architecture, I suggest you try renting an Olympus Zuiko ED 7-14mm f/4 (with mFT adapter) to see how it compares -- Raw distortion is easily corrected and lower than Oly & Pana MFT 7-14 lenses, sharpness is superb; the main limitations are veiling flare (not blobs so much), size/weight, no filter thread, f/4 max.

Very useful as I own a GX80 and am intending to get this lens. It's good to see what can be achieved with the same kit and if I can't achieve it, I know it won't be the fault of the lens.

Excellent review Heather! I took my Laowa 7.5mm f/2.0 for a recent trip, and while I like the lens' overall build quality and IQ, it suffers from an inability to focus to infinity. So what's happening is that the lens focus doesn't quite reach anything beyond 10m at f/2-f/2.8, even when I turn the focus barrel to infinity or way past infinity. I tried to fix it on my own by putting some thick pieces of paper in between the rear elements and the cylinder that holds it. I will check later if this solution works. Cheers!
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
we didn't notice this problem on our copy. I guess yours has a problem.
@Gary_W
@Gary_W 7 лет назад
Yes, I finally repaired it myself the savage way. I opened up the bayonet mount, then I took out the rear element, glued some thin pieces of paper to add some distance between the rear element and the chassis holding it, and put it all back together. Now it works just fine, no decentering, focus all the way to infinity, and as sharp as it was before :)

Thank you! By the way, how do you guys get the image of the bridge with the stars and milky way almost noise free with the long shutter? Did you guys use the long shutter noise reduction? My GX7(which I assume has the same sensor as the GX85) doesn't hold up pretty well when shooting long shutter, even at ISO 200, shooting an 8 second exposure caused more noise than shooting at ISO 3200 with SS of 1/10s. Cheers :)
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 7 лет назад
yes we use noise reduction otherwise it gets really noisy.

Thanks! I had pre-ordered the lightweight version at launch. Not only a great lens to just keep on the camera, but great for any sort of gimbal or even aerial work. I love my rectilinear Olympus 7-14mm f/2.8 PRO, but it's quite the hefty lens... and one without a filter thread. The Laowa tackles both those issues. And because of the early pre-order a free filter set will be included. So excited!

Shiznutsz Thanks for the info provided! Do you have to balance the lightweight version in your aerial equipment? I am also gonna use it on drone too

take a picture of a wall or the front a large building and check if one corner of your image is visibly softer than the other.

+Stephen Jenkins the only thing is that the aperture ring moves in 1ev steps, which can be a little bit annoying
@loft4me

To achieve foreground and background sharpness, in say, doing a walking video on the sidewalk, where you want approaching pedestrians as well as the buildings in the background to be sharp, where would you focus using this lens? Because of the wide angle, the depth of field must be pretty broad, but I would want to know the optimal focus setting to achieve the sharpest results. Highly considering this lens to supplement my 12-32mm kit lens on my GX85. Thank you.
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons
@MathieuGasquetMirrorLessons 6 лет назад
the depth of field is pretty large with this lens. If you use an aperture such as f/5.6 and focus at 2m or 3m, you should be fine. With a few quick tests you will be able to see which settings work best.

take a shot of a wall, or large building trying to be as parallel as possible and see if one corner is significantly softer than the other.
