Catching new things is one of the best parts of watching this show. So many little things make more sense the 2nd time around, like a certain hand gesture that Pearl makes, seeing characters before they're introduced and seeing why certain things get reactions from gems. Its so good.
I liked Alec's comments about how fully realized and rich the characters on this show are. Because imo, the characters really are the heart and soul of SU. They are what the creators care about most, not the big plot stuff that so many viewers tend to obsess over. And I also appreciated Alec talking about how all of the characters are so on-brand in that scene of Peridot giving Lapis the apology card. Because when you really look at the comedy on SU, so much of it is character-based and character-specific. And it works so well in part because of how fully realized the characters are and how well the audience gets to know them. That's just good writing.
So, fandom tends to treat Lapis like a victim where Jasper is concerned because she comes pretraumatized, was previously a prisoner in the ship, and (definitely not least) because she’s small and femme and Jasper is big and buff. But she absolutely manacled Jasper, dragged her to the bottom of the sea, imprisoned her in a toxic fusion, and held her down with the weight of the ocean for a full season. She’s the most powerful non-diamond gem we see and used that power to control and imprison Jasper out of anger. So, “what I did to Jasper” is fully accurate. Femme folks can and do abuse more masc folks. As someone who has worked with DV victims i actually really liked the show recognizing that, and get bummed by how much of fandom misses it. (just in case it needs saying, i’m not anti-Lapis. But, she’s complicated, and complicated characters are good!)
Thank you for pointing out that lapis is complicated and flawed, it doesnt mean she couldnt grow or learn. I feel a lot of the fan base feels that way about a bunch of characters when I feel the whole message of the show was "growth". Learning to grow up, become a better person amd learn from mistakes to do better. A good lesson I feel.
AGH GETTING TO SEE LU REALIZE THAT SOMETHING NEW FOR THE FIRST TIME WAS SUCH A TREAT! It adds a lot to Lapis as a Character and her relationships with everyone else And yeah wow the complexity of Lapis's feelings, it's so hard to not blame yourself, love her I wish we saw more of her shes incredible Lapis might be my favorite in retrospect which I thought before was Pearl, sorry Alec! Lapis is just too pretty and interesting!!
Funny that you mention MST3K because Joel Hodgson, the creator/host of that show, actually voices Mayor Dewey in Steven Universe. Rebecca Sugar is a fan of MST3K and I think her casting Joel was a pretty cool way to show that. And then Rebecca and her brother Steven Sugar actually worked on six episodes of the 2017 MST3K revival. I love when little connections like this come about.
So he didn't notice the whole Eiffel tower in the middle of Empire City for no explainable reason? XD That was pretty notably different and intriguing for me Fair opinion, though. My personal opinion is that I think it's fascinating how there's these little pockets of Weird Gem Stuff and then pockets of Ordinary Human Stuff, because I think it outlines the "ignore the weird and just keep going" attitudes of humanity in this version of the Earth.
This is one of my top favorite episodes! I’m personally autistic and have ptsd from trauma so seeing these two interact is like watching the left and right side of my brain ❤ the fact that they both have growth and it’s wonderful I’m hopeful for myself 😊
the choice to make them look so similar is interesting to me I wonder if like they had a bunch of gem concepts and picked one that just so happened to become important later
@@goldenbacon1572 Considering how far Rebecca Sugar & co planned ahead, it wouldn’t shock me if she already had that character designed. You’ll notice most of the background soldiers appear to be other Jaspers; keeping it limited in gems ups the realism
So when SU was coming out, I had this whole relationship thing happening. He expressed relating to Lapis throughout the show, I expressed relating to Peridot throughout the show, before we were a thing and after. It's interesting to rewatch it because I'm seeing in retrospect at how many points our interactions had parallels. The "emotional honesty" line by Peri later in the show is the one that's always stood out to me, but I'm seeing it more and more while watching these reactions. Neat!
Well to be fair empire city is actually a mix of Vega and new York hence its tag line being a mix of both the city that never sleeps and what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. When Steven says this it’s easy to think it’s just silly Steven but it’s actually a real thing. The world is mostly just our world with not a few changes even b.each city is a pretty normal small sea side resort town. It just magical because the gems happen to live there. Earth really isn’t all that different even with all the gem stuff, except for world war 2 never happening of course.

I don’t think the bismuth that hurt lapis was OUR Buismuth, considering Lapis is besties with her in teh future. I think it would’ve been covered? Also she was assumed to be a rebel, so the person who poofed her was probably a homework’s gem.
I'm 90% sure it was confirmed that that is indeed our Bismuth, it also wouldn't make much sense for a Homeworld Bismuth (a biulder gem) to be fighting in a war as a soldier since most of the Homeworld soldiers we see in that flashback are quartzes as for it not being covered, it can be assumed that there wasn't enough time for that or that Lapis and Bismuth talked about it in private, but yeah that was probably our Bismuth
@@bnuuuyy Homeworld could've been desperate for soldiers so they sent out other gems that weren't made for fighting. Also it feels like if it were the Bismuth we knew we would _need_ an explanation because then that would mean they wrote it intentionally to be a big thing but never touched on it at all and that'd just be really weird for writers to do that (even for this show)
@@goldenbacon1572 It was confirmed by Rebecca Sugar in the 2019 San Diego Con that the bismuth that poofed Lapis was Indeed our Bismuth, i'm not sure she elaborated further but it was confirmed by her.

Hello! Im both a diehard digimon AND pokemon fan. Growing up I didnt get it as I felt it was just more mon kind of stuff to love lol Later found out that Digimon technically came out before pokemon, and was a tomagatchi like toy that was aimed towards boys. (With mon fighting and ect) So while a lot of people warred over "oh pokemon copied" or "digimon copied first!" Technically no one copied each other as while they center around monsters, both are vastly different both in games and in series.

It's actually not that complicated in my opinion, Lapis trapped Jasper in a fusion against Jasper's will, she tricked her and told her she was a prisoner. Lapis abused Jasper, Jasper being unlikable und brutal and Lapis being traumatized explains what she did but doesn't justify it. It wasn't even necessary, Garnet had already easily beaten Jasper on her own, that's why Jasper wanted to fuse in the first place, had Lapis refused Jasper would have been poofed and bubbled by the crystal gems.
Agree. Lapis is heavily traumatized and sees this as a surefire way to ensure Steven's safety, but that doesn't make what she does not abusive. There's very little evidence Jasper was abusive back, there isn't an episode I can think of where Jasper actually seems like the bad guy in Malachite. She offers Lapis the fusion - she doesn't force her, she *offers* and Lapis says yes. Jasper's motives aren't good are her words are manipulative, but Lapis' actions are knowingly cruel. It makes the boat episode feel weird when Lapis is portrayed like the victim.
@@lukascoffman1118Not to mention they gave Jasper the "I've changed" line as if she did literally anything while fused with Lapis. For as far as we're led to believe she was chained and bound the entire time. Jasper begging to be Malacite again was like Stockholm Syndrome too.
