Ocean County - Gull Island (Point Pleasant Beach) - BRUSH FIRE
Around 12:30 PM Point Pleasant Beach got a call for a brush fire on Gull Island across from Point Lobster. Chief arriving on scene confirmed the fire, requested mutual aid from Point Pleasant Boro along with Manasquan for their fireboat. State Police Marine unit along with the USGC (Station Manasquan Inlet) also responded. Due to high and dry winds today the fire quickly spread along the bank of the island mostly moving towards the west. Most fireboats are winterized around here so Brick Station 23 couldn't respond. Manasquan's Marine 27 water pump was broken so they had to get a replacement on scene. Tower operations didn't work so they started to shuttle FF's over to the island via USGC & Tow Boat US. Soon after they started to get water on the fire and quickly contain it. The New Jersey Forrest Fire Service was also on scene along with the County FM. A helicopter was requested by the State but it was canceled as they got a hold of the fire. The cause is currently unknown & under investigation.

Station 75
Ocean County Fire Marshall
New Jersey State Police Marine Unit
USGC (Manasquan Inlet)

As they said, the one had a broken pump and many others in the area were winterized. I might agree that having a fire boat winterized is not great cause fires do happen in all seasons but I also understand the issues that come with boats when we have had days with lows near 0 and highs that were 20 or less. There's some point where you have to compromise between not having the boat in service in winter and not having the boat at other times because things froze and broke trying to keep it in service all year round.

@@Tac0Tuesday91 I’m curious as to where you came up with your EPA information. Post a link to it if you can. I’d be interested to read it. Because I find it interesting that the NJFS purposely conducts controlled burns each year that literally fill miles of NJ air with smoke for days at a time. I’m pretty sure a state level government agency, that often works in conjunction with the EPA/DEP, will not conduct an operation that would jeopardize their own existence. That would also suggest that fire departments across the state would be given citations on a daily basis for fires they couldn’t control in a rapid fashion. Think of some of the recent major fires in north Jersey that had warehouses burning for days, or the rows of homes in central Jersey that couldn’t be extinguished during the flooding conditions. Or the fuel tender fire along the turnpike that was left to burn until manageable. There have been plenty of fires in recent years where the fire departments did not or could not take immediate action or achieve extinguishment in a rapid fashion. I would be inclined to believe that fire departments and their methods of conducting operations would be excluded from citations due to the complexity and dynamic conditions present at a fire.

Two places where firefighters should never be in bunker gear: a wildland fire and on board a boat. Structural firefighters stretching their scope for mutual aid can be done safely, but the officers on scene should have ensured that the bunker gear stayed in the rig and that EVERY firefighter in the boat was wearing a PFD. Having said that, I love your channel. I grew up on the Jersey shore and miss it a lot! Your videos bring me a sense of nostalgia every time I see them.

This was an easy incident made complicated because of what appears to be a refusal to ask the marina for assistance to get to the island. By the time you had 2 engines, the fire less than a 10th of an acre maybe. Get em over there and start digging line and snuffing pockets! And leave your bunkers in the engines. Wear station gear at least over bunkers. You're gonna drown or die of a heat stroke digging lines in those.

In that town this is literally the only place where there's any open ground to burn other than a couple tiny spots around small ponds that are with 20 feet of a street. There's a cost versus reward point on any equipment and the reward from purchasing gear meant for brush fires doesn't justify the cost in this situation where 99.99% of the calls are structural or vehicle. At some level training (while always good) is also more beneficial to them to be spent practicing structural firefighting or extrication or RIT than on wildland when there's little frequency and in this case on an island where other than train tracks on the other end there's no real hazard to people or property. If anything I'm surprised they didn't just let it burn and make sure embers didn't carry to anything of value.
