Sometimes less is more. This redesign of a large, old, Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum) will result in a much smaller tree, with better proportions.
In the video I also explain how to address one of the big flaws needs: A large cut needs to close. How do you close large cuts on a bonsai?

Jelle, an alternative to cut paste, especially for large wounds, is adhesive aluminum duct tape. It can be peeled back as needed when re-scraping the bark or when checking on healing progress, and then just sealed back up. This allows for more frequent scraping during the growing season, which can improve wound healing. Also, bees sometimes make off with cut paste, and tape solves this issue too. That maple has the potential to be a beautiful bonsai, and you'll soon have a clone of it! Air layering is so satisfying, especially as you usually end up with a new tree with quality nebari right from the start. Thanks for another informative video.

I'm in the Walter Pall school of handling scars. I celebrate them as part of the design. I make them MORE irregular and carve them to resemble wounds from naturally torn branches. I never use cute paste, just a wash of powdered charcoal and water. A few applications and the wound takes on a weathered, gray patina. Often, they blend in so well, that they are overlooked by viewers.

Hi Jeff, there is a video about airlayers on the channel, which is exactly the layer you mention. In this case, the pot it just solar protection. I have a video on layering Deshojo mape in the making, where indeed I use a pot for the layering. once that one is separated and potted up, hopefully end of the month, I will edit it, and share it.

Thank you for the tips. I believe the maple is actually Beni Maiko.Good identification would be very short leaf stalks. Also the leafs would be a bit irregular and lobes tend to curve sideways.

I have recently acquired several big 'garden' Acers (Dissectum) that are very top heavy with long, straight trunks. In the long term I plan to cut them down to make short, dumpy trees but before doing that I plan to air layer the tops as that is where all the shape and movement is. The branches are quite a bit thicker than those you've layered here and to get the best shaped trunks I'll have to strip the bark around the junction of other branches but it will be interesting to see if I can pull it off. I'll watch these videos again before I start.
@GrowingBonsai
@GrowingBonsai 6 месяцев назад
I wish you all the luck. I have tried a dissectum once, and it did not layer for me. BUT I was impatient and layered in the same your that I moved it from a garden to mine. Keep in mind that mostly these are grafted on a regular japanese maple, so check it for low graft scars, and whether that will bother you in a bonsai..
@user-bw5ib8ds1e
@user-bw5ib8ds1e 6 месяцев назад
@@GrowingBonsai Thanks. I’m aware of the grafts and at least one of them has adverse taper because of it. I might just air layer where I can and leave the trunks to grow as planter/garden trees. If I get just one bonsai out of each I’ll consider that to be a win.

Thank you for the video. Let me know how it goes with the air layer. I had a very similar situation where I tried air layering a branch on a Shishigashira-type Japanese Maple, unfortunately, after two tries in two consecutive years, the layer failed to root and ended up cutting the branch off, even though the branch was healthy. It seems that some types of JM are difficult.
