I put my Hoyas outside in my shade garden last summer. I'd never had the plants outdoors before. Hoyas are related to our native milkweed species and a Monarch butterfly actually laid eggs on my plants. I found caterpillars nibbling on the leaves! Now I'm wondering if Monarchs would pollinate the flowers. I am so astounded by that Hoya collection. It's so beautiful!

(27:30) - Their substrate culture is similar to orchid medium. It retains moisture and drains perfectly. They repot yearly because when the coir breaks down it retains too much water and doesn’t drain well , which can cause root rot. Over time it also tends to accumulate salts, etc., from fertilizer and any tap water used, which can weaken the root system. Their culture provides ideal conditions for vigorous root growth by replicating conditions found in nature where the growing medium is microbially dynamic and constantly refreshing itself and being leached clean by rain. This is especially important for epiphytic and semi-epiphytic hoyas which fair poorly in ‘sour’ soil. ~ (shout out) - Doug Chamberlain recently posted a video on his experience growing Hoya griffithii, one of the rare plants discussed herein.

"Oh look, flowers!" - rips off flowers. I'm surprised he let you touch any plant after that. I think you should end off these tour videos with a nice container arrangement of all the flowers and stray bits you break off walking through. I loved the little Indiana Jane moment where you rushed into the jeep, and he sits there like, "oh, we're really doing that, ok." that so would have been me. Or I would have floored it and almost run over the camera guy while yelling "hoya's ho!" never can tell.

Great information and filming. Really good to see how the experts do it. I was wondering with hoyas getting so crazy popular, is poaching them from the wild for overseas markets getting to be a problem?
@summerrayneoakes
@summerrayneoakes 4 года назад
I think there isn't even any habitat for poachers to poach from. Habitat loss is the greatest issue there. Plus they propagate so easily, you don't need to pull them out by the roots. Many of the hoya plants are edge species though too, so as forest gets cut, they can start to populate on some of those edges, but the challenge is too rapid deforestration in critical habitats.
