Yep. Before Bird's VERY disabling lower back AND both achilles being injured, Bird was being talked about my a number of bball pundits as the GOAT. I still think Jordan's exploits ended up overtaking Bird as the GOAT, but while Jordan, Magic, Kareem, Barkley, WIlkins, etc. were all in the league and playing at high levels, Bird won 3 MVPs in a row (only other players in NBA history to do that were Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain). As far as all-around player, I don't think anyone can match Bird to this day. LeBron and Jokic are right up there, but LB was just the man.

In an interview, Bird said in 7th-8th grade he couldn't wait for school to be over because he knew the waiters from the hotel would be out on the courts. And he really appreciated them letting him play with them. He wanted to play against the best, and at the time, they were the best. I'm thinking Bird was tall for his age, and he must have been fairly good if they didn't mind including a 12-13 year old in the game.

@marksmith4346
@marksmith4346 5 месяцев назад
LB averaged 25ish against Rodman while getting his boards and assists. Pretty good against one of the best defenders ever. People have to keep in mind too, if LB talked smack to the other coach and could get that coach second guessing himself, he already won. One story about the Bulls team said he talked smack to the coach and they pulled the forward off of him and put the center on him, kept scoring using speed so they put Jordan on him, and LB just shot over him. Imagine a young Micheal Jordan trying to carry the offense and then having to hustle back to guard a bigger guy pushing him into the post. Ended the game with a forward guarding him...

Hey Folks. A few observations. First, I’ve been a Lakers fan since 1967 so I was NEVER a Celtics fan. I hated ALL Celtics UNTIL I read Larry Bird’s autobiography. This book pointed out the commitment and dedication Bird had as a youth as he began to learn the game. Second, I have a saying that I often attribute to Kobe Bryant (RIP) but I’ll use it here for Bird. “Sometimes, the other guy is just better than you”. That was Larry Bird in his prime! 😎

I watched Bird thru binocs at the old Memorial Coliseum in Portland for a 1/2. He get a rebound by jumping 6" while 3 guys around him were jumping 2'. How'd he do that again and again? Nice edit Nick! I am an older guy from Indiana, followed Larry from the college championship game v Magic. He was incredible, so sad his career was cut short. For me peak Larry is my first pick all time to build a team around. I have never seen anyone play harder or play more hurt than Legend to help his team win a basketball game.

Larry bird would dominate even in today's game he was that good. He was an elite player for a reason, alot of ppl underestimate Him but he was 100% legit

Many of the older players would because they worked on skills other than the 3 point shot. The thing today's players have on them is they have mastered the 3 pointer. On good nights, they might dominate. On bad nights, when their shooting was off, and it happens, they would have nothing to fall back on and get obliterated.

I spend lots of time watching the Larry Bird trash talk videos. This one was really good. I was lucky enough to watch this in real time. You don't hear it on TV so watching the replays knowing he probably just told the other team what was coming is great. The 80's to early 90's was the best time for the NBA. It has superstars but was still a team game. I had a bunch of favorites. I actually was a fan of both the Lakers and Celtics but also liked guys like Barkley, Hakeem the Dream, and Spud Webb. Now, it's all about "me, me, me". Too bad.

Larry was truly one of the All Time greats. The only thing he didn't have was longevity and we all know in New England he played hurt for ALL of his final 5 years. During his peak 6-7 years, he was top 3 of all time! NO ARGUMENT. Overall, he's got to be in the Top 5-8 all time. If you think otherwise, you simply didn't watch him play! And that was an era when they could hand check AND fouled you/ beat you on virtually every play before you shot the ball. Today, he'd easily average 33pts; 12 rebounds, 9 assists w/48% from 3's, because he'd always be open! Larry legend was the best player on the court until MJ took over the reign around '88.

It wasn't the best. You had like 5-10 good players.
@nonsuch
@nonsuch 7 месяцев назад
@@SuperSikarlo Yeah, 5-10 superiorly smart players that could school everyone today. Larry couldn't jump more than a few inches off the ground but made anyone "athletic" look silly. There's more to Basketball than 3-pointers and showing off... that doesn't amount to anything. Everyone just cares about how they look now. They are soft and weak. Today's wusses can't/won't even play hurt 😂. The NBA was good until the 2000's and pretty much died with Kobe. Now it's just boring as fk.
@SuperSikarlo
@SuperSikarlo 7 месяцев назад
@@nonsuch larry bird is my favorite player. But the all around skill level is way different. For example, MJ faced 9 HOF in the finals while Lebron faced 27. My point is proven. Bird, magic, and kareem were the only noteworthy players in the 80s that wouldn't get cooked

@@nonsuch kinda ironic considering he's a better scorer than bird, magic, and kareem. Not to mention better passer and smarter too. Call him what you want but your saltiness speaks volumes on your ignorance.

A sportsman to the core. It is always great to hear any player give compliments to another player (any sport), that means there is respect between both players. That is missing now and it shows on the rink, court and field. Thank you for putting this together, other pros need to learn what it is to be a classy pro.
