I respect Holmes. He's 1 of the greatest fighters of all time. Despite never getting full credit for it. He still carries a bit of resentment toward Mike for being the only fighter that ever stopped him. He barely gives him much credit. & in another interview, he said that Tyson wouldn't beat any of the top fighters from the 70's. Which is far fetched and far from the truth.

I watched the fight again and Larry is right about getting his arm cought up it the rope, but that didn't cause him to lose the fight. Mike was faster, younger, and just an outright better boxer.

Mike Tyson is my Favorite Boxer of all time! With all due respect to Larry Holmes he knew he wasn't going to win that fight against Tyson, he even said it when Don King approached him about taking the fight. Much respect to both fighters and Mr. Holmes held out for more rounds than most guys who faught tyson before him especially for his age during the fight.

If you go back and watch that fight his arm did get caught in the rope, but that definitely didn’t affect the outcome of the bout at all. Plus, you’re a seasoned veteran you should have more ring awareness. Hold the L.

Holmes was 38 in that fight. It would have been interesting to see him fight Tyson in his prime. Holmes had the best jab in heavyweight history. Joe Louis, Muhamad Ali, Larry Holmes, Rocky Marciano, and Mike Tyson are the 5 best heavyweight un history, the GOATS!!! No doubt.

He was old, he was out of shape, he was rusty, he was retired for 2 years, he got only few weeks to prepare. No shame in loosing that way, especially not to Mike Tyson.

Larry was obviously past his prime, I’ll give him that much. The interesting part in my opinion, is the fact that Larry was knocked out in the one round that he decided to open up and start boxing like the “old” Larry.

I never liked Larry Holmes even in his old age. You don’t want people to make excuses for Ali but you making excuse on why Tyson whooped you.

Tyson hit Holmes so hard it sounded like a gunshot, and Holmes went over like a tree.

Larry's _forgetting_ some details or minimizing due credit to an opponent (not unusual for Larry) and that Tyson actually dropped him twice before the final KO - the first time with a bazooka of a single punch that literally spun Holmes around on the way down. Credit to Larry that he got up at all and tried to walk it off and tie Tyson up but he was still being battered by Tyson, and when he tried to fire back in the middle of that ongoing barrage he caught his arm in the rope while trying to launch a 'Hail Mary' uppercut and Tyson dropped him for the 3rd and final time in that same round.

Bro, Larry Holmes is one of the most underrated heavyweight champions of all time. The eastern assassin was the real deal man but when he fought Tyson he was way past him prime just lookin for a purse. Idc if his arm got caught on the rope in the 6th or 7th round or not Tyson was puttin him to sleep that night, even if Larry was in his prime he was fighting a prime Tyson & he was getting destroyed regardless.

Mike did admit after the fight if Holmes was in his prime, he couldn't beat him. As wild as Mike was, he was humble that night. Mike lost against Don King though, financially. I'm glad Holmes didn't get robbed by King, at least not to the point where he was broke.

When Larry fought Tyson, even if Larry had been in his prime, Larry gets knocked out. Tyson was going to destroy Larry no matter, it was revenge for Ali.

In all actuality. Holmes is telling the truth. If you go back and watch the fight. He was trying to set Mike up for the uppercut and his last punch before getting knocked out did indeed get caught up in the ropes. Although it wouldn't have made a difference.

Holmes overrates himself. Norton was well passed his best and still gave a prime undefeated Holmes a war. This just shows how much greater Norton was than Larry. Larry was around the same age when he lost to Spinks in a one-sided beatdown. The Norton fight, the Spinks fights, and his best wins being suspect are why I don't consider Larry to be up there with the other great heavyweights. Norton and Ali are the best Ws on Holmes' resume - two well out of prime fighters. I thought Norton BEAT Holmes - old as he was. That's why he's full of himself to say he was the GOAT. He couldn't even finish old Ali or Norton (who he arguably lost to) and got spanked by young fighters when the shoe was on the other foot.

He never wanted to risk his health for the sport, so he didn't push himself farther than what he needed to. I have seen this fight several times the last few days on RU-vid and saw the original when I was 7 in 1988, and I never saw Larry Holmes arm get caught in the ropes .He did time Mike several times in the 2nd and 3rd round and if he had more time to prepare for the fight probably would’ve caught him with those shots and upset him , but he didn’t and was way out of shape . I think his arm being caught in the ropes had nothing to do with him getting knocked out .

I just wonder, Larry in 1992 against Ray Mercer and Holyfield, there was really a another Larry in the Ring.

Holmes didn't have much of a chance of beating Tyson outside of a punchers chance. The Rooney trained Tyson was a force of nature. Holmes saying he set Tyson up by luring him into his right uppercut is laughable. Tyson's chin was superb. If Holmes landed that uppercut he claimed he set Tyson up with, he would've needed another 6 to 8 to land to have Tyson in real trouble. The chances of that were 0%, Rooney tyson used non stop head movement. Tyson had the skills/tools to do away with any heavyweight of any era while under Rooney, including Ali. He had elite hand speed, insane power, granite chin, knock out capability with both hands, and constant movement. Fighting tyson back then came down to who could hurt who first, and Tyson made a living of trying to take his opponents head off from the opening bell. Holmes couldnt hurt Tyson before Tyson hurt Holmes. Only person Id give a realistic shot at beating a Rooney trained Tyson is George Foreman.
