Perhaps, but I really don't think it would have helped. Mittank would probably have left them at some stage. In any case, they tried to stay with him and he insisted they leave. If they insisted on staying, it would only have caused him to see them suspiciously and as a threat. First break psychosis on an overseas trip...it's just a terribly unlucky combination.

@hot sauce and others... this is what I couldn't comprehend either, that not even one of his so-called friends stayed with him. They knew he was injured due to the heavy blasts against his head, when he was attacked the night before. Also on this occasion btw, he went to the store all by himself to buy something, even though they were with him on the street and easily could have accompanied him. I mean, we are talking here about Bulgaria and about a city. In this country almost everybody in more or less official function is corrupt. Additionally, during the night, criminal gypsy clans roam the streets very openly, in day time they are there too of course, but more or less "only" to pick pockets and "beg" in an extremely aggressive manner. The tourists are a magnet to such criminals and one is better off to not trust anyone. So, experiencing this as a tourist or somebody not used to this kind of situation, it is actually quite understandable, when a traveler gets irritated and anxious, especially with a severe head injury. Lars Mittank must have had a very bad concussion, as he was bleeding from his ear, suffered from memory loss, could not sleep, could hardly eat and vomitted, was photo-sensitive and had intermittently a sort of hazy or misty sight, had problems with the balance and also had problems to concentrate after the blow to his head. The young men had drank some beer before, but weren't actually drunk. Lars was able to tell all this to his mother on the phone and to the first doctor he went to see. This is why this doctor sent him to the hospital. The usual action to take in such a case, is to make a ct scan or MRI for diagnostic purpose. But this did not happen. He was sent away by the hospital without having diagnostics made, with the prescription for the pharmacy. Then, as he could not spend another night at the hotel he and his friends were staying at, because this hotel was fully booked. he used a taxi to find a pharmacy, while also having his luggage with him. After he finally found a pharmacy, which had the tablets he needed, he asked the taxi driver about a hotel, which would have free rooms. In Germany, as well as in other European countries, this is a very normal information to ask for in a taxi, when being in cities used to travelers like tourists or trade fair visitors. Very often taxi drivers have agreements with severl hotels, pubs, clubs etc, where they would primarily take passengers to when asked for such an information. He did not need to care about the price, because he had a credit card and above all, he knew he could rely on his mother in case he needed more cash money if needed. Their relationship had always been very close, and got even more intense after the father had died some months before he went on this trip with his "friends". (Lars probably was asked by the taxi driver about the price range of the hotel he was looking for, and then would have said, that it would not matter. But this is just an assumption!) The taxi driver then took him to this hotel in a VERY bad and dangerous part of town. Lars then checked in and as soon as he entered the assigned hotel room, he called his mother again to tell her where he was and how he was doing etc. He asked her about the medication, so she could look it up in the internet. He told her, that he had a bad gut feeling about the hotel receptionist, because this man had copied his credit card when he payed for the hotel. He then also complained to her, that the hotel was very noisy, poorly soundproofed, and he heard people shouting and doing creepy things, that made him anxious. When the private investigators later followed Lars Mittank's route, they also went to this hotel and his hotel room and could confirm all of what was complained about by Lars, except for one thing - the copying of the credit card, which might have been, because the private investigators were not travelling alone, but in a group. A single person of course always is more vulnerable than grouped people, so this might be the reason for the exception. Anyhow, Lars told his mother on the phone - I think it was another phone call made from this hotel room - that he was going to leave the hotel, because he did not feel safe. So, as the private investigators could confirm everything Lars had complained about, this also is understandable, especially when keeping in mind, that Lars had a severe head injury with all the symptoms I have mentioned above. In yet another phone call, Lars informed his mother, that he now was outside and that he was trying to hide until day light would come, because he was too afraid to make another move in this city district. In this phone call, he hardly raised his voice, was obviously trying to stay under cover in a tree or by a tree, and was shaken with anxiety. His mother tried to calm him down, until he told her, that the battery of his cell phone was getting low and that they would have to end the phone call, so he would be able to keep in touch when needed. This is actually one of the many signs, that Lars Mittank over all had a good mental state, he was able to reflect the situation he was in, he could at least roughly assess and describe his situation in the night before he went missing. Lars surely was not hallucinating, but he may have not been able to clearly understand the danger he was in, because he did not know the language and therefore only could read the faces and gestures of people, while having the concussion, which had still not had been diagnosed in detail by ct scan or MRI, etc.Hemadde it through the night safely, as we all know due to camera footage from the airport and due to additional phone calls with his mother, who had meanwhile booked a seat in a travel bus for Lars, so he would be able to take it if he was not able to take the plane because of his injuries. Lars Mittank clearly had no reason to run away from home or from his mom. He had a very good job and his relationships at work with his employer and his collegues were stable and very good. Later, his employer would also pay for the search, as well as for the private investigators and lawyers involved. Of course Lars was depressed over the loss of his dad, but the love between him and his mother helped both of them to carry on in sanity, even while griefing. Yet what was to happen at the airport, had a great impact on Lars Mittank's well-being. And here is where there are problems to recollect data. For example, some belongings of Lars, which he had all left behind, were there at first, then went missing, like the medication box with the tablets in it. Also, some of the very important camera footage from the airport, which had been there and showed to the private investigators and lawyers, went sort of "missing" when the police got a hand on it. Also, various men were presented by the airport managers and later by the police, as the one man, who was said to be aa eye witness at the airport, seeing Lars run off. We all know, that Lars went to see the airport doctor and that he phoned with his mom several times from the airport. On one phone call he asked her to send cash money via Western Union, because he would not be let out of the country, if he didn't pay for this. This too has been confirmed by the private investigators and lawyers to be true. As I wrote before, this is Bulgaria, and this is one of the many Bulgarian traits. Lars explained his mother in detail how Western Union works and what she had to do and which information she had to send him, so he could collect the money right after she had sent it. They both have never dealt with WU until this moment. Lars always talked clearly to his mother on the phone, he was released to have made it trough the night safely and was very eager to finally return to home. So his senses were actually like we would expect from a person, who was sane. The anxiety was gone, Lars was just nervous and longing to come home to his mother and life, where he could understand everything and be safe again. But when he went to see the airport doctor a second time, there was suddenly a turning point, as soon as a man entered the waiting room, where Lars awaited his second appointment there. This was a witness, which would not be presented correctly later. Lars obviousy ran away from this man, he obviously tried to hide from him. This could be seen on the camera footage. But sadly, the camera footage showing this man, who made Lars run off, was gone as soon as the police had it. The private investigators and lawyers saw the camera footage, so it really was there. Still available was camera footage from several cameras, showing Lars run and often turn around like to see if he would be followed. Also still available camera footage shows Lars cross the street infront of the airport, hide behind a bus, also by walking and later running behind the bus as it started to move, and finally jumping into a ditch. This was the last to be seen from Lars Mittank.

Burning Man? There's nothing like psychedelics to kick psychosis into high gear. What is harmless for most is the worst thing someone prone to psychosis could possibly do. I had my psychotic break (manic) after a psychiatrist prescribed Adderall because he thought I had underlying ADHD. I have discovered that besides psychedelics the worst thing someone with bipolar could do is take amphetamines. Mania doesn't need momentum. I have someone watching me too. I'm medicated and stable now but not very functional and it has been years since the break.

@@anonymousperson3023 I get what you're saying. I think people often over simplify these situations. I've had friends who needed help but outright refuse it from everyone. There is only so much you can do to force it upon them. Especially if he was experiencing a break of some kind. Also taking into account that they were young, men and that there is quite a lot we might not know about their efforts to help. I'm sure this haunts them everyday. I cant imagine.

He’s helpful to me as well. I’m a schizoaffective man with many issues. Simply listening to him has a therapeutic effect on me.

Entering a fugue state usually happens quietly, they don't seek attention, they don't run, are confused but they aren't that paranoid and they leave work or home, not a vacation spot. So i'm ruling out fugue and agree that his schizophrenic epidode impaired his abilities to survive so much that he probably died somewhere alone.

I have in the past had patients that were from other parts of the United States...far away from where I work that it took months to figure out who they were because they were in active psychosis for which it was difficult to find the correct medication. One problem is that a lot of words are rambling or they have such outrageous stories that it’s difficult to find what parts might be true. I also have had a patient go AWOL and we found him almost a year later thousands of miles away. It does happen.

this is the main theory people talk about , he was being paranoid and went crazy because of either antibiotic side effects or just his ear injury that impacted his brain and he just ran and never stopped and died like that. Only problem i have with this theory is that no one ever found his body , if he just died like that somewhere near the airport people , police would have found him he can't just disappear

I wrote some more details about this Lars Mittank missing person case under the comment made by @hot sauce stating "My grand father said ," go out together ,come back together" i always hold to this and never left anybody behind .". You might be interested in reading it.

But everyone knew Elisa Lam struggled with bipolar disorder. She also hadn't taken her meds for a day or two, something which can cause disastrous results for someone with that condition. I haven't ruled out foul play, though. The elevator's malfunctioning was really convenient, and the time stamp on the camera footage is blurred, and maybe edited.

The psychosis also explains why he got into a fight in the first place when it was out of character for him. He could easily have squeezed himself into a crawlspace in an abandoned building and gotten stuck or something like that. The fact that he hasn't been found actually makes a lot of sense because he would have been trying to hide if he thought he was being chased. If he hadn't run off not being found would make a lot less sense.

Until today it is not even sure if that "fight" ever happened. Also: He was examined by THREE doctors, one even at a hospital. It is very unlikely that all three diagnosed a ruptured eardrum but didn't even think of a possible head trauma. Varna is a common area for young tourists to party. So it may be possible that all three doctors weren't able to recognize the onset of a serious mental health issue, but I am pretty sure that they have lots of experience with drugs, so if he had taken anything, they would at least have suspected it.

This is definitely possible. Or he could have had a total psychotic break, wandered off, and is living on the streets. This has happened before. I hope they find him, either way.

Or maybe, just maybe his own perspective was the truth.

This city, especially the place around the hotel, which the taxi took him to, is in the hand of gypsy clans.

I don't know. He was a young, healthy man. All he had to do was kill time in a hotel for 48 hours and then fly home. Why would his friends have thought he needed protection!?

His friends offered to stay with him but he said he'd be okay. I dont think how they behaved was out of the ordinary, especially as he wasn't acting strangely back then.

As the private investigators and lawyers later found out, the information Lars gave to his mother during the phone calls were all completely correct. Also, he wasn't sort of "involved" in a fight. He was attacked when he didn't know he was in danger. He had drunk some beer, but he wasn't in a state you would describe as being drunk. He and his friends were having fun, as well as everybody else. Some youngsters didn't take some of his jokes with humor, which resulted in an attack, when he hadn't expected it. Then other actually uninvolved people have also joined the attackers. So the physical attacks came from the others, which makes him a victim. If this had happened in most of the other places in the world and not in a country like Bulgaria, then Lars Mittank would have gotten medical care the next day at the latest. And he would have been allowed to leave the country and head for home freely. But this was not the case in Bulgaria. And this was not something only appearing in his head, it was actually real, as the private investigators and lawyers could proove later. In addition, the hospital turned him away, did no diagnostics, only gave him a receipt for antibiotic medication, that is prohibitted in Germany and most other countries since years, because it may cause psychotic symptoms. It is unclear how many tablts Lars had taken, as the medicine box with the rest of the tablets were with his belongings, but got lost as soon as the corrupt police got hold of his belongings. Also, very important camera footage from the airport went missing as soon as the police got their hands on it. It showed the person going after Lars. This guy was once said to be a construction worker, then he was said to be a security guard, then he was said to be a cleaner from the airport, etc. Also several different men were presented as this on man on different occasions. The private investigators and lawyers found out, that it was the police covering up proof and that it was the police also, who would put pressure on airport workers, who witnessed Lars Mittank's escape. These witnesses then would be silent. The German police has a communication person to work with Bulgarian police when needed. This German communication officer also can hardly communicate with the Bulgarian police and he could also shed some light onto the way things are being handled in Bulgaria. His information supported all the other people, who gave information about Bulgaria and their corrupt system, which quite often makes people pay for the freedom to leave the country. Anyhow... the Bulgarian police is saying, that Lars Mittank was a crazy guy and this is the reason why he is missing. But this certainly was NOT the case. This is a cover-up, that has been exposed by the private investigators and lawyers, and also was supported from German police officials.

I'm also not sure what Lars's mother meant by it, but she said on a German TV interview not long after his "disappearance" that Lars was "psychisch labil". Like I already mentioned, she didn't explain herself or expound on it. I'm now trying my best to recall which show it was, maybe Stern TV or XY Aktenzeichen? If I find the clip, I will definitely share it with you. I promise. I also do hope that Lars's family are able to get some sort of answers. My heart really goes out to Sandra, Lars's mother. She seems to be suffering so much :(

The "Antibiotic on the list and not on the list mystery" was solved: The mother confused two different lists: One was an inventory list that included everything that was with his belongings, that was the list that included the antibiotic. The other list only mentioned the items that were given to his mother. The antibiotic was prescription only and is not even eligible in Germany. So it is completely normal, that the antibiotic was not handed to his mother and that is the reason why it apeared on one list and not on the other. The antibiotic was turned over to the police and right there with his case file.

Was thinking they would include on her list the property of her sons that was not given to her as well ( a full detail) rather than giving her the actual bottle and remaining pills or prescription just a note with the item details. Thanks for your comment I vaguely remember now she did confuse the lists they had. vs what was provided to her. Always felt bad for the mom as he was contacting her right before his paranoia had gotten to its worst.

I think that's too much to ask of a doctor. They are educated in medicine but they are not mindreaders or superheroes. If some guy with a concern about his ear gets it checked out then makes an odd statement and legs it, there is no way the doctor would know anything about why. If he was an inpatient in a psychiatric hospital then yes, the doctor should be expected to be alarmed. As for this case though - some guy he didn't know just booted it out of there for whatever reason. Besides I am sure he alerted someone, but again, how alarming was it? He probably explained the events to airport security like this - some guy wanted his ear checked, than made this odd statement and ran... leaving all his stuff here.. security looks into it, checking the camera. Nobody knows were he went.. and that's that. People miss flights all the time, so aside from trying to contact him about the luggage and managing it, the role of the airport is pretty much over. That he is missing would be up to the friends and family to report and then start that whole process and get law-enforcement involved, which probably happened here a bit after he missed his flight.

@@polarbearsrus6980 It was a real doctor, and he was checking him out. It's nothing to do with being a good or bad doctor here. A young man literally ran away as fast as he could for apparently no reason. They did what they could to check were he went afterwards, but they could not find him. Doctors don't have superpowers, they have medical insight but can't read minds or predict the future. They are regular humans, and would be just as confused as anyone in such a situation with no foreknowledge of what was going on with the guy.

Many more facts have surfaced. Also being from Germany, plus having sons that age, who also travelled numerous countries including South Africa, I am really into this case. Bulgarian police officials try to cover up by declaring Lars to be a crazy boy, who got drunk and then went missing. This is surely NOT the truth! Varna city officials and also police officials did everything to keep Lars' mother and her private investigation team including lawyers to stop searching and to stop digging for the truth, including Bulgarian translaters and Bulgarian lawyers, whom they somehow made to hinder the investigator team at their work, may it be money or pressure of some other kind. I personally belief, that Lars is kept captive in Bulgaria with the Bulgarian police knowing. But Lars may as well have managed to flee, because he is intelligent and creative. At some point Lars may have suffered amnesia, which may have resulted in him not knowing who he actually is. So he also could be living anywhere. He spoke German and English fluently and also some French at the time he went missing. He might speak yet another language now. I must also say, that even though until now the world wide gathered information did not lead to finding Lars Mittank himself, other missing men were found, which could then reunite with their families and friends or which brought closure to families and friends, that had been hoping for a sign of life. So the Lars Mittank missing person case has become a very important and meaningful missing person case with great impact. As for Lars, we should all hope the best for him until true facts proove otherwise.

@@lisasternenkind6467 I agree with you, although there aren't any new developments as far as I know (I'm German as well.) The more time goes by, the more my hope that Lars is still alive dwindles. I think of him often.

@@Galaxie08 Me too, he is constantly o my mind, which is why I care so much about propagating the search website. In my opinion Lars has been caught by the police and put into a psychiatric facility. Such a place in Bulgaria would not be comparable to what we now have in the Western world. I hope, that either the Bulgarian officials bring clearance into the case, or investigaive forces from Germany are allowed to check such psychiatric facilities thoroughly themselves. This is so gruesome for the mother who has lost her family and ow is alone. For her too, I am not willing to give up hope. Also I am not willing to follow the Bulgarian police with their cover-up story, that Lars was a crazy drunken German losing his mind. In this case politicians need to communicate actively, or else we will never find out what happened to Lars. But sadly, neither are the German politicians interested, nor are the Bulgarian. So sad.

What did Lars hear/see that made him run out of the airport like the Invisible Man was chasing him? I also wish German & Bulgarian LE would focus on finding him. His poor mother 😪

It makes sense how a situation could go south pretty quickly with someone having their first psychotic episode, especially alone in an unfamiliar place. If someone is delusional and paranoid anything or anybody becomes suspect. Concerned friends or strangers become the enemy, phones become bugged, and food becomes poisoned. So they tragically cut themselves off from the very people or resources that could help them. And if a person believes their life is being threatened, their switch flips to survival mode -- the nervous system shoves rational thought aside and throws the body into autopilot. What follows will be a series of impulsive, lightning-quick decisions, a strategy that could land anyone in big trouble staggeringly fast. Without warning, Lars dropped all his stuff and ran for his life, scaling barbed wire without a thought and fleeing into unfamiliar woods. I wonder how far he got by the time the adrenaline wore off, when he was forced to recognize the dire circumstances he was now facing -- no supplies, no clue where he was, and no plan. It's bad enough to have your first psychotic break alone in a new place. But with no access to food, water, or sleep, the person will be relying upon progressively diminishing problem-solving capabilities. Furthermore, their unpredictable, irrational behavior would make them particularly difficult to track. We can clearly see, how rapidly Lars' prospects for rescue shrank down to zero, within the course of mere hours, as his paranoia drove him further and further away from vital resources. Cases like these are heartbreaking, not to mention massively frustrating. I believe better mental health awareness in the general public would go a long way toward eradicating tragic scenarios like these. Signs of a mental health crisis or abuse are easily missed by the average person. Mental health education is just as important as learning the early signs of a heart attack or learning first aid. It can save lives. I hope Lars' family is able to find peace someday.

The world is a vast place and people unfortunately go missing every day...unfortunately Cameras cannot be everywhere to witness these disappearances and provide more clues as to what happened to these individuals. I believe in this case, he suffered a psychotic break, ran into the empty field near the airport and after wandering around for maybe hours or days, died of exposure or suffered an injury that ended his life. What has always disturbed me more than anything about this case is how The police did not seem interested or invested at all in conducting a thorough search for him. Maybe if they cared to do their jobs they may have discovered his body and at least provided some closure to his mother. It's such a sad case and I hope somehow his family can heal from such a loss. May he rest in peace.
