Larsen Trap In Action

This is my larsen trap in action. I needed to build a new one as my old one had seen just about enough work over the years. I don't like to kill anything unless I have a good reason and usually it's because I'm going to eat it. In this case it's becasue of the damage the Magpie does to the population of small birds. I cull a few maggies and the small birds florish.
I made an adjustment to the left trap after noticing it needed more tension.

Keep up the good work!!! When will people realise just how much effect magpies have on our songbirds.I just wish the RSPB etc would accept the fact that magpies,crows etc are decimating our song/ground nesting birds with their predation.

Nice work HalfQ. I hate magpies. I have no desire to see them hurt or inhumanely killed. They are intelligent birds and can't help what they are. However, they are a pest and it's clear to me how their numbers have become a problem. When I was a kid seeing a magpie was a rarity. Now they're all over the bloody shop. Much to the detriment of the song birds that you used to hear in suburban gardens of the UK. All you can hear now is the horrible squawk of the crow or magpie.

@JODIMAR45 well said m8, our song bird population has been exploding this last few years since I have been cleaning up the village. We almost lost all small birds, it was a very close call. Thanks for watching and commenting :)

This is so cool. I don't know if I told you this already but my aunt told me that when she was little they were very poor and they went weeks with nothing to eat but gravy and sometime she would be eating her gravy and she would see little birds in it.
@HalfQ
@HalfQ 12 лет назад
Yeah that can be a problem m8, what you can to is put some ply board inside of the mesh in the keep pen so they don't smash thier beak up. A magpie is better as a call bird. Crows and jackdoors don't care after a bit. I also put a roosting pole in so they have a place to sit. A can of cat food is great for maggies. Take care.

The reason i want one of these is quite clear and reasonable one. I feed the small birds, songbirds finches etc. Robins coming eating out of my hands as i put out the feed. And the moment i go indoors the vultures come calling. The bloody magpies come and wreak havoc. And by hook or by crook they will go. They shall be caught mercifully and they shall be killed mercifully. I must get one of these traps. Just started building a Ladder trap. The more the merrier :-)
@JODIMAR45
@JODIMAR45 13 лет назад
@HalfQ I do my bit too with the Magpies and especially carrion crows.We use larsen traps,a ladder trap and of course shooting.There are still a few magpies around the village where i live but no where near as many as there used to be.

nice, i just made my own larsen trap and have already caught two magpies! I am worried though because the calling bird keeps sticking it's head through the mesh and don't want it to keep injuring itself. By the way is it better to have a magpie as a calling bird or a crow? :)

Try changing the food and set the trap but don't allow it to spring the trigger. They will get used to feeling safe inside. they tend to like feeding in quiet places and early in the morning. I use dog food "Biscuit" as they are always nicking it from my dogs.

@ATestamentToNothing
@ATestamentToNothing 10 лет назад
These traps are incredibly cruel. There is absolutely no need to kill or catch a wild bird unless you're out in the wild and starving or you're doing some conservation work that requires it. If you do some research into the songbird-corvid links its blatantly just been crafted to support the shooting industry and to keep these traps in circulation. They're banned in Denmark where they were invented and should be here.
@HalfQ
@HalfQ 10 лет назад
The small bird population is doing fantastic now. Magpies are a pain in the arse. The trap does not hurt the bird so how can that be cruel ? Every part of your comment is utter bullshit. Now, fuck off.
@ATestamentToNothing
@ATestamentToNothing 10 лет назад
HalfQ Think I'll just quickly respond before I fuck off anywhere... Wow. That's quite an aggressive response. Not keen on people questioning your beliefs or just having a bad day? If we're talking about facts (as in, no bullshit), cruelty doesn't just mean something physical, so it can be, and is cruel. Imagine putting a dog in a space barely big enough for it to stretch out then using that dog to catch other inquisitive dogs that may be responding to some kind of alarm call, then kill those dogs in front of the first bait dog, then repeat. (perhaps you don't follow this exact sequence but many of these traps are used for that purpose) - imagine the fear and torment inflicted on that dog throughout its life in those confines. Magpies are very intelligent creatures, some studies say as intelligent as chimpanzees, but regardless they would experience the same fear and helplessness as a dog, or a pig or a bear or most animals capable of suffering. The other thing "Magpies are a pain in the arse" - is this something you got out of a scientific journal you contribute to with all the information about your 'small bird' population in your back garden? If you replace the word magpies, with humans you'd be onto something truthful. Just do some research if you want to really know about it - the small bird population decrease in the UK is down to farming methods and pesticides. You could of course stay completely ignorant and carry on catching and killing a few random magpies, it might make you feel a bit manly and clever for a few seconds as you murmur "bingo" to yourself with delight but don't kid yourself into thinking you're actually doing anyone a favour. Wonder how long you'll be able to leave this comment up before getting so upset that you delete it!?

@rv3571
@rv3571 9 лет назад
Tyler Marks hahaha compare trapping birds to slavery why dont you.... that seems a totally reasonable analogy. not. . . you realise just by using the internet to talk to me you are destroying (in far more horrific ways) ten of thousands of birds yes? is that morally right? no probably not. Are you still going to use the internet? yes, probably, you will also use your car, you will also use electricity, you will buy your meat and veg from a grocery store, the meat raised in horrific conditions, the veg grown in an area of forest that has been felled and turned into agricultural land, pesticides sprayed ( bees dying by the thousand) herbicides sprayed (natural flora destroyed) pests controlled (rabbits shot, pigeons SHOT, foxes SHOT) all so you can have a fuckin carrot and you dare level the topic of morals.... amatuerish. embrace human nature, you are, after all human.
