Larvitar is all about rewarding you for the grind || Pokémon Review 

I love this line. Other than Charizard, I can't think of a Pokemon that could've been more perfectly sculpted for what my 10-year-old self thought was cool unless it also had swords, and I already had Scyther for that.

Honestly Mega Tyranitar looks like a giant monster/Kaiju from Ultra Man or Super Sentai with its extra design details. This honestly works for it as a lot of “evolved” Kaiju become a little busier as a result.

All the eye and spike apendage holes carry over across the evolution - that's the coolest part to me. Those holes on tyranitar's chest are where the eyes of larvitar and pupitar used to be. The holes on the legs are where larvitar and tyranitar have to bend their legs- and there are two sets because they have different leg structures.

I wish Larvitar vas avalible earlier in Johto. It feels super satisfying to have pseudo legendary on your team for majority of the game and see it grow and reach it's final stage. I used Tyranitar only once in Ultra Sun, and it was MVP of the team.

Larvitar starts the "I become a cocoon in my first evolution and than become a menace in my secons evolution despite not being a bug" trend. Its a neat little line I have fond memories of. Frustrating about the late bloomer line is that the player gets them mostly late in the story.

While there is undeniably Godzilla influence in Tyranitar's design, it seems like one of the primary inspirations for it is Bemular, the first ever Kaiju fought by Ultraman! You can see it in the color (Godzilla is usually depicted as black) and the head crest. Baxcalibur seems to be a more straight up Godzilla pastiche to me. But hey, Pokémon can be inspired by more than one thing.

Tyranitar is one of the pokémon that remind me that the "dark" type isn't a "shadow" type, but an "evil" type.

I never noticed how the mega took back design aspects from the 1st and 2nd form. This line could never miss.

Why does Larvitars 3D idle look like he's hitting the griddy doe

Tyranitar is one of my favorite Gen 2 Pokémon. I was SO disappointed when I learned that I couldn’t get it until after the Elite Four so I couldn’t play the main game with it.

I just hope that Tyranitar would somehow return to the meta OU.

Having Blue Oyster Cult's Godzilla play in this is the cherry on the top of this review.

The Laritar line has gone into metamorphosis

Pupitar has some of the best evolution design and foreshadowing in my opinion. You can see how Tyranitar pops out of the shell when it's ready to evolve

Yeeeeeeees, I have waited so long! Tyranitar is one of the best designs.

They actually recently added a pokemon that's even MORE overt in it's reference to Godzilla: Baxcalibur. It's more scaly, semi aquatic, blue and even has those signature three-pronged spikes along it's back!

The mega evolved is meant to go one step harder than Godzilla into rubber monster suit. It's an Ultraman monster. Spikes and a face on the chest, causing it to look more effects show and by extension "Bigger" in both size, and effect...literally.

Another thing that is kinda cool is how Larvitar looks like a tiny Tyranitar. Helps bring the design full circle.

Someone needs to edit Tyranitar scenes from the anime with the Legendary Godzilla roar.

Also ttar gets bonus points for how mad people get in competitive when he takes their biggest attacks like it was a particularly unpleasant friday

And being rock type, makes it even stronger in the sandstorm, because if you are a rock type you get a special defence burst in the sandstorm and get all the benefits of the effects of sandstorm on the opponent doing chip the damage. also it can have the outrage dragon dance combo. A very scary, very strong Pokémon

The fan term for the late evolving late encounter is Psuedo Legendary and they all require 1,250,000 exp to reach level 100, are two stage evolutions and have an exactly 600 base stat total in their final (permanent) form.

Not to mention it’s insanely good stats and and legacy in the competitive scene, being one of the most widely used in competitive Pokémon during the 2000s.

Honestly missed the return of the pre-evolution design features on Mega-Tyranitar. I always just saw Godzilla Mega-evolves into Space Godzilla.

Larvitar should have been obtainable early in your party to actually level it up in battle and not exp. Share

As a kid, I always loved Tyranitar. It looks so badass.

Ever since the Celebi movie I’ve always thought Tyranitar was so cool, and now as an adult, I still feel exactly the same

Tyranitar has been one of my favorite. He was on my main team when Gold version was released.

I mean, the cacoon pokemon are always rewarding to see from their first lines. Beedrill and Butterfree are 2 bug types that look so cool considering their first evolutions.

Tyranitar has been my favorite Pokemon ever since one carried me through Ultra Moon

something I like about Tyranitar is that its belly is just pupitar, the final version being Larvitar having a better belly armor as he grows up

Larvitar is so cute.❤ Especially the one Ash took care of from the day it was still an egg.

Mega Tyranitar also goes back to larvitar for its colors. Its got the red belly under the eye like spots.

Idk if you know this or not but the common term in the pokemon community for these pokemon are "Pseudo-Legendaries" which are non legendary pokemon with a base stat total of 600+ and they include Dragonite, Tyranitar, Metagross, Salamance, Garchomp, Hydreigon, Goodra, Kommo-o, Dragapult and Baxcalibur(Gen 3 has 2 for some reason)

Mega Tyranitar also draws inspiration from Space Godzilla, because how else can you go above and beyond?

The way it evolves late game is similar to Aron/Agron.

I think it’s mega should get a little more credit as it’s a clear homage to other kaiju like space Godzilla and destroyah

The mega is also inspired by space Gojira with those giant spikes

Late bloomers that pay off amazingly are always a treat in Pokémon. Shout out to Volcarona.

Favorite Pokémon all time. Celeby movie Pokémon number 4 also made me love him. Dude is a dinosaur dragon hyper beam beast

I miss mega evolutions

I didn't even realize that the designs of Larvitar and Pupitar came back to Mega Tyranitar's design. That's cool.

Tyranitar was a monster in my post play through of gold. I had to find ways to transfer a larvitar to silver to play through the whole game with it. Best Pokémon in colosseum, had to have it in emerald.

gotta love how each stage has aspects of the others in it. the similar crests, the vents on the chest, the stubby arms and fat legs that get more defined, and they each look like they progressively morphed into the next stage.

I always thought that Mega Tyranitar was supposed to be in part a reference to Gurren Lagann, much like how Mega Aggron, debuting in the same game, resembles Eva Unit-01.

I like the PokéDex entry for Mega Tyranitar, that the power has split open it’s back, almost like a cocoon, connecting further to its kaiju roots.

Ever since i was a kid my 2 favorite pokemon were the Houndour line, and the Larvitar line

I remember when i was a kid playing FireRed, i had boxes and boxes of Larvitars. They were a fun Pokémon to play with

Funny enough Mega Tyranitar looks like your Typical main villain in any of the Tokusatsu franchise out there cuz its design screams *FINAL BOSS* for some reason

A welcome way to reward a gamer for making it to the very end is done in a fitting way, but maybe not treat nearly all Dark types as being either needlessly rare or saved until the absolute last parts of the postgame

Mega ttar is metal as f too. Dude gets so pumped up his back splits open, and the only thing still keeping him alive is his sheer fucking will (according to the pokedex)

Coolest Pokemon, and a contender for the most competively viable pokemon of all time.

The mega evo is a reference to Space Gojira I believe

I love the fact that you have godzilla playing in the background that's a real fitting touch

Dragonite might have been a good start for what to expect out of a pseudo-legendary, but Tyranitar refined the definition. The idea that if you put the time in to these kinds of Pokémon, the payoff is rewarding for both having a powerful Pokémon, but also a cool looking on at that as well. And who didn’t want to have “Pokémon Godzilla” back in the day?

I love that Tyrannitar learns dragon dance, earthquake, smack down, rock blast, stone edge, rock slide, crunch, rock polish, stealth rocks, etc. It's just so bulky, fast, strong and versatile.

The only problem is that it's double weak to fighting moves but making it hold the item that reduces super effectiveness might be good

You know putting the 3 evolutions and the mega together like that really does make the evolution line look very good bringing back all the designs in the mega. I’ve never thought about it like that I’ve always just seen his mega as ttar but spikier and meaner

The new game gives you so many xp candies that you don't have to be that patient anymore.

I love that they doubled down on his likeness to Godzilla with the Gama ray being hyper beam and a learnable move for him

Pupitar seems like a design that mainly reflects its mechanical nature (an unimpressive middle evolution that an incredible final form can evolve from).

And then Gamefreak puts the poor thing in the last postgame dungeon.Larvitar should've been the gift egg.

TBSkyen, Pupitar is a pupae/pupa. It's the middle inactive stage between a larval stage of a larva, which is what Larvitar is, and its adulthood. Not for no reason. Now why it turns into a Godzilla afterwards is beyond me.

2D tyranitar looked like Godzilla. 3D tyranitar looks like he wants a turn on the xbox

Not to mention you can only get Larvitar at a fairly low level, in the very last area of the Postgame. Not that you'd realistically get a dragonite before beating the E4 due to Hoenn's super wonky level scaling, but it's at least more natural since you can get Dratini much earlier than Larvitar.

The line can be describe as "Suddenly Not-Godzilla"

I honest to god did not realize that M-Tar incorporated its whole evo line into the Mega Evolution Tb Skyren out here doing the Lord's work

I remember as a kid finding low level larvitar in Mt. Silver when Gold/Silver was released. And grinding it patiently waiting to see what happened. When I got Tyranitar I was so awestruck.

This is my favourite line, by far.

God... i remember playing silver, discoving this lil guy at mt silver and thinking " this this is gonna be a monster when he grows up..." The simple looking pokemon always are. When i finally trained him up, he was steamrolling the elite four on his own in subsequent runs. Letting you re-fight the elite four was so damn rewarding.

I love that iron thorns is, while likely a reference to Mecha Godzilla, is also inspired by the pokestar studios Mecha tyranitar, which is in itself a Godzilla reference. I was so happy to see my favorite side thing from gen 5 referenced :3

To add he also learns some of the most powerful moves in the game

I can’t wait to see TBSkyen cover the Frigibax line, whose line is basically Ice-typed Gojira even more than this is Rock-typed Gojira.
