Seems like Lockheed gets all the defense contracts these days... Agreed. There are of course more than two companies making passenger aircraft but there are only two making larger passenger aircraft. Would be nice to see Lockheed back in, perhaps they're still bitter from being outbid by Douglas's inferior version of a tri-star?
Christopher Digital Illusion should maybe be counted over Tupolev, if you really want to be technical there are a course many more aircraft manufacturers but I'm counting widebodies. Only a few have gotten to that level in passenger aircraft. Antonov deserves a rightful place in larger aircraft as well, they are after all still the world record holders.
@@CursedEarthPizza duhhhh...... In north Canada : We Dream of having tuff aircraft , for our conditions, American stuff is lightweight , a scam ..... [ as much as I like TriStars etc, they can't handle it here ] The Tu 154 is awesome .... a 727 on steroids, for example.
When I first started flying in the early 80's I remember being on a lot of DC-9's, 727's and 737-2's and then one day I was on a DC-10, it was a whole different world inside, fascinating to be in a machine that big that would actually fly. Then I remember my first flight on an L-1011. It was a quieter, seemingly wider, noticeably higher tech, more comfortable and definitely cooler looking version of a DC-10.. I didn't know much about planes when I was that age but even then I could tell I was on an exceptional aircraft. From then on, I when I traveled by air, I always wanted the plane to be a big L-1011 but it rarely ever was. My last time flying on one was in 1995 via Delta. I've since flown on just about every widebody passenger jet out there today but I'd love to ride on the L-10 one more time if I could....
It's opinion that makes the horses race, fellas. As far as design aesthetics go, the center engine's inlet on the L1011 comes out way too far over the fuselage, the rear wheels seem too spread apart compared to other leviathans, and the nose looks rather dated - did Convair have a say in its nose/window design? No airline wide body manufacturer has/had better front ends than McDonnell-Douglass. Compare the profile and front end of a DC-10/MD-11 with an L1011 or 747 to see what I mean. Lockheeds look old, and Boeings look boring. :)
PalaniRides One thing we can’t disagree on is the grinding sound both the Tri-Star and the DC-10 make on takeoff. The sound goes right through you as if your being tickled from the inside.
***** You are so right... The silhouette is the only thing it shared with the DC-10. The engine-mounting, the doors, the galleys, the Direct Lift Control, the quiet, the CAT3C auto-landing, and fuselage panels bonded together in a giant autoclave that saved the weight and stress-cracking of thousands of rivets! I think there is only 1 fatal event in its 40+ year career that was attributable to the aircraft itself.
Wtf Happened Even the silhouette is pretty different to the DC-10 - the L1011 has an S-bend arrangement on the third engine as opposed to the straight through layout on the DC-10 and MD-11. The Boeing 727 has a more similar layout to the L1011.
The Lockheed Tristar was my favorite of all the early "jumbo jets". I flew on a TWA L1011 on an overnight flight to London. I remember sitting in the real cabin thinking about the enormous air scoop just a few feet above my head. I think it is quite possibly the most elegant of the early large transports. The one in this video looks like a private plane. The fillet below the central intake and the shortened fuselage make this one a L-1011-500 the long range model.
From both my pilot and passenger side as well as the aviation nut section of my brain, the Tri-Side is the best looking and most advanced widebody, as well the 757 wins the narrowbody sweepstakes. Everything from the wide doors that could handle two abreast to the dimming windows and comfortable seats the L-1011 was way ahead of its time. The 757 is the favorite aircraft of many pilots who refer to it as the Sportscar of airliners. It can climb out without needing “steps” to burn off fuel before continuing its ascent. It needs far less runway to takeoff than the 737 or 320
I was in one of these with delta in 1996 flying from atlanta to florida i was 13 was awesome i love this aircraft pity they are not made anymore its a beautiful looking plane.
Michael McCook :( :( :( My dad retired on the 1011.He flew everything from tail draggers to the L10.He loved it,loved those engines. He was flying to Europe on them till he retired at 60,for Delta. I was hoping someone was flying them somewhere. Thank you for helping preserve aviation history.
Wow, how fortunate for you that you were among the crew on that baby. I've only been a passenger on one but it was enough to make me love it for life. I've heard that Delta had several in storage in the desert, don't know if that is still true or not....
It's smooth, unless you sit near the tail, also had a tendency to create fog in the cabin when hot outside-on the ground. A great plane that should have achieved much more.
Definitely the best looking trijet ever produced. Also the most technologically advanced. It's a shame it's not still flying. DC-10 and MD-11 are eyesores compared to it.
First time I flew on one was going to Bermuda in 75. We stayed in the Hilton right off Jfk. We got in about dark the night before, took a cab for what seemed like 30 min. We ate and went to bed. I didn't change the time on my watch and the next morning we were an hour late because of it. We got a cab and took the 5 min ride to the airport. I really am glad we got screwed or we wouldn't have made it. We were running through the airport like OJ did. He had just started doing the Hertz commercials. Well, I saw this big tail and the engine and the first thing I think of is a 727. It makes no sense to me why they would fly a 727 to Bermuda but what do I know. When I got off the jetway into the plane It was so damn nice. It was the first wide body I had flown on and always holds kind of a special spot.
i remember in the late 80's counting how many TWA L1011's were on the ramp at one time....(6) , as I worked at the FBO (Midcoast) across the field....great days!!!
I had the privilege and honor of flying in a L-1011 in 1998 from Toronto Canada to Athens Greece onboard Air Transat... Probably my most memorable flight... That sounds and that awesome cruising speed! ... I've done that flight countless times and that L1011 still holds the record at 8 hours 54 minutes. The L1011 symbolized the golden era of flying, when flying held a certain prestige when every seat was cushioned for total comfort and had an ashtray and the airline food was actually good, because we lived in better times.... Seems like planes are getting slower and alot more uncomfortable with these transit bus style seats, all they care about is profits. Make the seats smaller, less leg room, jam as many seats into an aircraft as possible, charge an arm and a leg for baggage, serve disgusting barely eatable food, charge extra for drinks and then fly slow... There was a time people hoped their flights were longer because they enjoyed being on the plane... Now people can't wait to get off the plane.... How sad.
L1011-8. Glass two person cockpit, modernized interior, two GE90s or GE9Xs under the wing and the newer model rb211 in the tail. Boom! Hire me Lockheed!
Nice job of capturing it! BTW, under suggested videos over there -----> It shows Rick Astley, what the hell does this video have to do with Rick Astley? lol
Whether a DC-10 or Tri-Star lover you can’t disagree on the incredible growling sound both make at takeoff. The sound goes right thru you as if you’re being tickled from inside your body. Delta used to advertise that they were the quietest plane in the skies. Au contraire. I flew L1011s several times in first class, and they were so noisy I could scarcely speak to my seat mate. I wrote to Delta, and they responded that they didn't mean to imply they were the quietest INSIDE but rather they were the quietest OUTSIDE. Nevertheless, they were beautiful aircraft and far out shone the DC10 in the looks department.
I'm gonna save her in someway. Don't worry guys, N388LS will fly against all odds and government regulators saying that shes too old to fly. No airplane is too old and no job is too much.
fordxbgtfalcon That's correct, and that was also one of the reasons why the L1011 wasn't as popular as the DC10, even though it was a far better aircraft.
***** It was a better aircraft but it was a "non-compromise" aircraft wich was more expensive and complex to maintain and companies decided to take the "cost" over "quality" option. I wonder what would had happent had Lookheed went ahead with that longer Tristar proposal they had or even the TwinStar proposa about a 2 engined TriStar (vey much like the A300 but more pax and longer range probably.. like an A330)
Yes, although the DC-10 was likely to suck the last few rows of passengers out the back end without warning in the early years. Engine 2 was also in a slightly different location in the L-10.
