Laser Cutting Leather into a Piggy Bank

I have no idea how to make Laser Cut Leather Piggy Bank but I'm doing it anyway. I have a roll of really beautiful leather from Weaver Leather... and I think I can make this pretty cool. I ~could have~ 3D modeled this... but that would have been boring. Instead I did some old school pattern making starting with a paper mache balloon, then I laser cut some paper towels, then a paper bag, added on some laser cut butterfly wings... and you'll have to tell me how you think it came out.

Great project Brooke. I love how you generated the pattern. Not the biggest fan of the wings on the pig, but that's just me.

I debated adding them or not adding them the whole time too. Michael was very anti-wings but ultimately they made me smile bc they were so ridiculous that I just went for it

Awesome project Brooke! Super cool how you were able to get that pattern from craft paper and a ballon! I’m sure you were up a lot of “Midnights” with the stitching but it really came out great and you could barely see the seams, it’s almost like you used an “invisible string”

For stitching holes, in Illustrator, select your shape then go to Object > Path > Offset Path. Set the Offset to -0.125" (1/8") or whatever you want it to be. Select the new path and then click on Stroke. Set the weight to 1.5mm (or whatever size you want size your stitching holes to be). Set the Cap to be rounded and the check the Dashed Line checkbox. Set 'dash' to 0, then 'gap' to whatever you want your stick spacing to be.

Love this! Even though it kind of gives off a "Hannibal Lecter" vibe. LOL But that was a lot of work and it ended up a lot better than I expected about halfway through the vid.

Oh I was doubtful this was going to go well the entire way through. I almost did the stitching in red just to lean into the weirdness of it all but changed my mind last minute heh heh

Brooke, that came out fantastic! When will you go into production? j/k. I would have had no idea how to approach that. I learned a lot from how you did this. I have yet to try leather on my laser, and those wipes are the bomb! I think the wings are a great touch! Bravo!!

I have no clue how I’d be able to produce the amount of sewing this took in a cost effect way but I might do some normal butterflies for sale soon. We shall see :)
