Short video showing how I lash the valves on a Chevy inline engine. This is for hydraulic lifters on a 6 cyl. Modern lifters only require 1/2 turn for lash. Old design lifters required 1 full turn. Parts at www.12bolt.com
If you enjoy my videos. My son could use your help. He is suffering from Muscular Dystrophy. gofund.me/7115...

Good video.I showed a lot of guys that trick with the firing order.

Have an old USGI manual for military trucks that someone long ago wrote in pencil beside the 6 cylinder firing order "too young, too old, just right". I haven't forgotten that firing order since reading that.

Curious why you go with the 1/3 rotation method, as opposed to the setting the #1 exhaust and intake, #2 intake, #3 exhaust, #4 intake, and #5 exhaust with #1 at TDC, then rotating the crank a full turn and setting up all the others. The shop manual has the method above, but is there any advantage to one vs the other? And when you say "modern lifters", what do you mean? I'm setting up a stock 250, and I assume if has the original lifters in it.
@davidstepeck2644
@davidstepeck2644 3 года назад
Since you're going two full rotations, can you do cylinders 1 and 6, 5 and 2, & 3 and 4 at the same time? Hope to hear from you and great video!
@bulltexan1
@bulltexan1 3 года назад
No,because,while 1 is at intake,,6 is at exhaust.Camshaft wise,,that is.

I have a 250 in-line with the integrated head I want to switch to a regular 250 head how hard is it and is there a video on it?
@0569138373
@0569138373 6 лет назад
It’s little bit hard, but if you live in the usa or Canada it’s gonna be easy for you. The things you gonna deal with is the 1_power steering pump bracket 2_ transmission kick down bracket. Btw you can cut the ps bracket and reuse it with the regular head. 3_alternator bracket. You can use the same alternator bracket if ur engine got the older alternator bracket.

I do not understand how you marked the pully in thirds..

HALF PINT Same here. Didn’t explain how how he came to the first mark. Must be magical.
@JCWren
@JCWren 4 года назад
Yeah, he did. He says he set the engine to #1 TDC (look about 0:35 into the video), and he made a mark (the yellow line). The second mark is 1/3 around the balancer, and the third mark is 2/3s. You don't need to be exact, you just need the valves to be fully closed, which is on the base circle of the lobe. You can estimate the difference, or measure the circumference of the balancer and divide by 3. Technically, you don't have to do that. You can set the engine to #1 TDC, then set the #1 intake and exhaust, #2 intake, #3 exhaust, #4 intake, and #5 exhaust. Then rotate the crankshaft one full turn, then set #2 exhaust, #3 intake, #4 exhaust, #5 intake, and #6 intake and exhaust. Both methods work. Tom's way allows setting the valves in pairs (both intake and exhaust for each cylinder), and requires rotating the crank 5 additional times (1/3 of a revolution each time). The factory service manual way allows setting half the valves, then one full crank rotation, then setting the other half of the valves. Take your pick, which ever feels more natural to you.

I would probably estimate, then you can see the piston at the top through the spark plug hole pretty easily to confirm.

Hello friends, greetings from Chile, I want to order the improved valve plates and locks from the United States since I am going to improve the cylinder head. I would greatly appreciate if you have the parts number or a store that sells engine parts for the 259 Chevrolet 6 online.

Why not just do half on 1 tdc, then the other half at 6 tdc?

Half turn past snug opens the valve up. And then it doesn't run. It only works for my 250 when it's just snug. Anymore and the valves stay open. Any less and it's tics. I've got a stock 250 btw. What gives ?
@shitbox7413

Anything past zero lash preloads the lifter, doesn’t open the valve...

Why do you think they are needed? Pushrods are fully supported by the head. Geometry and alignment is fine.

Oh OK I was just wondering because I've seen them on so many motor's before especially when used with aluminum roller rocker's I didn't know the head supports proper push rod valve train geometry Bro sorry dude .
