Werner Klemperer (1920-2000) was a German-American actor best known for his portrayal of Colonel Wilhelm Klink in the popular television series "Hogan's Heroes" which aired from 1965 to 1971. Born in Cologne, Germany, Klemperer and his family fled to the United States in 1935 due to the rise of the Nazi party. He studied theater and music and appeared in numerous Broadway productions before transitioning to television and film. Klemperer was a versatile actor who played a wide range of characters, both comedic and dramatic. He won two Emmy Awards for his role in "Hogan's Heroes" and continued to act in TV and film until his death in 2000.

Everyone's "last day" is a sad ending. Is there every a happy ending for your last day?

I read that Hogan's Heroes became a hit on German cable TV, but due mostly to the way it was translated. Swabian and Bavarian are dialects that the German characters speak and it's different from standard German. They also had to change heil hitler into some other words, but that's the only way you can make the show work on German TV.

But the voice acting in iHogan´s Heros had been changed in German into a rather silly typ of comedy. So the Americans were bombing Germany not with BOMBS! but with TOILET PAPER ROLES !.for example

I am a German and let me tell you that it is one of the funniest shows ever made. It is really astonishing taking into consideration its age. The accents are something you guys unfortunately cannot enjoy with us. Both versions are really great. Love 'em!

A good , informative documentary about an artist that was certainly a lot more than Colonel Klink. For those eho get upset with this comical portrayal of a WW2 German P.O.W. camp, they should read author Paul Brickhill's book The Great Escape. Inside they will find that at this P.O.W. camp, run by the members of the Luftwaffe, that the Allied P.O.W.s were provided with a library, a garden, space to play soccer, a live theatre stage where German officer's often enjoyed the Allied P.O.W. productions. The logic behind this was maybe if we give the prisoners something to do they won't get board & try to escape.Since the prisoners were Allied Air Force men they often had post secondary education & could speak some French & German, while the German guard could often manage some basic English..Akwardly bonding often formed between P.O.W.s & German guards when the P.O.W. opened up their Red Cross parcels & invited the German guards to sample some of the raisons & chocolate. A bond would be formed & months later, when working on escape plans, Allied prisoners would try to coax the befriended German guard into getting them a compass, etc. After reading The Great Escape you may find Hogan's Heroes to be exaggerated truth! Basically a satire sbout these P.O.W for Allied airmen.

He could change gestures in a split second. His Body Language , physical Movments were that of a 20 yr old.

R.I.P. WERNER KLEMPERER, even though Jewish by birth and background, Werner Klemperer had embodied in his roles, not just in HOGAN´S HEROS, " THE PROVERBIAL NAZI " , just think at his role in ONE STEP BEYOND: THE HAUNTED U-BOAT, 1959 ( It is complete on RU-vid) His performance in THE JUDGEMENT OF NUREMBERG was also great of course. I just had wished I could had seen him in more roles. Also interesting his appearance on Bing Crosby´s Christmas Show ( also on RU-vid )

I think it is interesting learn that LeBu was a surviver of a concentration camp! Sad to hear he suffered this, and we did not know about it. Sgt Shultz was also a survivor, and was the General Hocksteder was also a Jew who lost family to the Nazi's. I liked the show when I was a teenager, now see it as making fun of the Germans who where actually much less dingbats than what is shown and made fun of in this TV show. I understand the show is going to make fun of the Germans, and think it was a great idea in the 60's.
