Down at Goodwood, we got to film the last ever Ford Mondeo British Touring Car ever built! It has the V6 engine with a whole lot of goodies built by Andy Rouse. This car is an instant classic and will hopefully live on for many more years!

This maybe the last ARE built Mondeo, but this is far from the last Mondeo V6 in the BTCC. West Surrey racing picked up where ARE left and raced the facelifted Mondeo. Prodrive then inherited the program later on, still with the V6.

I did think myself that this was not the last. Having done a little research I believe the last of the V6 Mondeo's were the ones at the end of the supertourers era. The MK2 hatchback drove by A. Menu and A.Ried, can't remember the 3rd driver, think there was 3. It started as a production V6 found in the st24/st200 but was downsized to a 2ltr displacement to meet the regulations at the time. Believe it produced a little over 300bhp. Correct me if I'm wrong. And finally this being one of the first versions of the Mondeo in the btcc was based on the saloon and were they called Si ? As the original ST branded FORD was the 24 MK2, unless the st170 focus was out before, can't remember.

Ford and Cosworth who tuned and built the engines for the Super Touring BTCC Mondeos from 1993-1999 ( In 2000 Prodrive who ran the BTCC Mondeos in 1999 & 2000 took the engine development inhouse, since they were not satisfied with the work Cosworth had done in 1999, since the engine lacked power compared to the rest of the grid ) , decided to use the Mazda derived 2 .5 liter KL V6 engine as the base engine, since it was slightly smaller in size and lighter as well, rather than the American derived Ford Duratec V6 from the road going Mondeo. The engine was destroked from 2.5 liters to 2 liters to comply with Super touring car rules, since all cars HAD to run 2 liter naturally aspirated engines with around 300 hp, and a revlimit of 8500 rpm. The rules also said that the engine could come from any car from your parent company, so Ford, who owned Mazda at the time, and Cosworth decided to go with the Mazda engine instead. The pros of this engine was top end power and great sound, but downsides were reliability issues throughout it`s life, ( untill Prodrive built their own engine in 2000 ) and a lack of low and midrange tourque compared to the 4 cylinder opposition ( except Volvo who ran a 2 liter n/a 5 cylinder engine derived from the Volvo 850 / S70 2.0 with a 20 valve head ) www.supertouringregister.com/document/148/

Not on these ones it doesn't, the engine in these Rouse-built Mondeos was in a much more 'standard-ish' location, meaning a lot of its weight was over the front axle. That's part of the reason these Mondeos weren't terribly competitive. Much later though, when Prodrive took over engineering the Mondeos for 1999 and 2000, the V6 was mounted such that one bank of cylinders was horizontal with the ground and the crank was right up against the bulkhead. In those cars the transfer shaft did indeed run through the vee.

Love that mondeo and those wheels would love a set of those in a road fitment (4/5 stud) which I don't think you can get or they ever made could be wrong but type of wheel that suits any car I think. Keep the touring videos coming would like to see the Laguna, Peugeot 405/406 any tourer really. It's so interesting the engineering and design behind them. 👍🏻

Last Mondeo built by legendary Ford racer Andy Rouse Engineering, and the last saloon Mk1 Mondeo to be built for the BTCC, since in 1996, West Surrey Racing took over the project, and they decided to run the Mk1 hatchback Mondeo in the BTCC, and 1996 was the worst year for the Mondeo in the BTCC, they were built by Schubel Engineering in Germany, and were finished very close to the season opener, so an underdeveloped and undertested car ran in the 1996 BTCC, whit a big lack of speed and reliability problems to boot. In 1997 and 1998, the facelifted Mk2 Mondeos were used by West Surrey Racing, this time built by Reynard, and 1997 was another dissapointing year for Ford in the BTCC, and leading driver Paul Radisich left Ford in the end of 97, for a very poor 1998 season in a Peugeot sadly, in 1998, the late Will Hoy did win a wet race at Silverstone, it was the first win for the Mondeo in the BTCC since Kelvin Burt won at Snetterton in 1995 in a Mk1 Saloon Mondeo, just like the one in this video. In the end of 1998 Ford hired legendary firm Prodrive to run the BTCC Mondeos in 1999 and 2000, and things improved alot, since the 1999 Mondeos were a massive improvement over the earlier versions, but sadly, in 1999 it was again let down by a lack of power and reliability from the 2 liter naturally aspirated Mazda KL derived V6 engine, with around 300 + hp and a revlimit of 8500 rpm ( super touring car requirement ) so in 2000, Prodrive took their engine development inhouse, and it make a big difference, since in 2000, they were outstanding, and the Mondeo sounded fantastic as well, this year, and they took all 3 places in the point standings this year, with Alain Menu being the champion, ( The 3 remaining factory teams all ran 3 cars in 2000 to make up for the drop out of several makes after 1999 ( Volvo Nissan and Renault, due to the very high cost of developing and running these mega machines ) in 2001 Super touring was replaced by the new BTC rules, which was cheaper and simpler, and attracted new makes as well, like MG and Proton. In the ETCC Super touring cars run untill the end of 2001, when the new Super 2000 rules replaced them. In Sweden, Super touring was replaced in 2003 by the Super 2000 rules.

ARE lost the contact for the mondeo to WSR I don’t believe it had anything to do with wanting to run a 4pot. Yes Rouse believed that route was likely a better package but there was benefits from the v6 too. Ford decided on the v6 route here, not forgetting this is well into Mondeo competition. ARE already developed the original Mondeo BTCC cars & this was the aero super touring car era . ARE loosing the Ford contract was more the management looking after their own IMO however that’s another story. Last Mondeo BTCC car built by ARE not the last Mondeo built for BTCC. At the time the Ford 2ltr 16v zetec had a very small close valve area which is obviously not ideal. ARE took the Mazda produced 2.5v6 & destroked it to 2ltr’s & got the project going until Cosworth Technology started the engine project & supply. Owner CNC AS is the man who knows this car in & out as he built in period @ARE. Great car proper BTCC super tourer & shame current crop are not as these cars where because the BTCC hit its high point in that era & now far from the exciting days of the BTCC. Andy Rouse proper engineer, old school extremely clever talented individual. Remember a topic on who was best driver in that era & Rouse v Soper was the final. No disrespect to Soper here but he doesn’t even get close to Rouse! Most if not all where arrive & drive guys, Rouse was engineer, team owner, boss, driver all rolled into 1 & he was hands on too he knew EVERYTHING about his cars because he built them. Build develop set them up, probably mapped on his own engine dyno’s (be it Cosworth did later engine) support & race. Good to see the old Zytek ignition fuel adjustments. Think of Ford in BTCC & ARE Rouse Sport was the combination for me, shame it didn’t carry on. He stands alone as Mr BTCC IMO & will never see another like him.

Absolutely no problem great you did a feature. Alan could have dealt with the exact facts but I presume running the car he’s a busy man. Like to see Andy Rouse interviewed if he would agree & I would fight my way through potential interviewers to quiz him on his history outlook & views. Really hope he will write a book & I am 100% certain Motorsport people would buy in bucket loads. In fact imagine if I wrote it!

The book Ford In Touring Car Racing is your bible when it comes to Mondeo super touring cars, as is the Total Fords Magazine Special Edition copy called " Performance Mondeos " If you can find it, i highly recommend it, it had a full feature of why the Mazda KL v6 engine ( from the Ford Probe / Mazda MX6 ) was used instead of the Mondeo Duratec V6 engine, the KL engine was a smaller and lighter unit, which matters in racing, small differences can make a big impact on the track.

@@TwinEngineCorsa i managed to see a the one in blue and white one there. Not sure if that one was one of Andy Rouses cars, it was at knock hill when they were doing some sort of event, at the btcc years ago, 5 touring cars of that era were up there, Only 4 were on the track. The fifth one just stayed on show, which was the audi 4x4. Johns Cav , David Leslies Nissan, Honda Accord and the Ford Mondeo in blue and white. Not sure if that is the one in your video, in a different livery. I Know Johns had been restored recently, and Honda had been still used as a race car at the time too.

I'd gues the alternator being driven off the driveshaft would either be because of space being an issue or probably because it wont be taking power through drag coming directly off the engine. As the car is not sitting idling for long the battery will have enough charge until the car strats moving.

The idea was it didn't load up the engine. Changing the belt - if it snapped during a race - was much easier when you have one zip tied to the block!

Fantastic car, have loved touring car racing for years. My son's even more enthusiastic than me, despite being only 24, he obviously didn't get to witness trackside the 90's touring cars (aka very expensive banger racing which basically it was!!) Also where we live there used to be race team on a nearby trading estate. When the race team had left and the old unit was being cleared my son was helping his cousin to clear it. In a corner of the yard sat a ford mondeo touring car bumper with EXACTLY the same livery as this car. This bumper, rather than ending its time in a skip now sits in our garden shed, We're not to sure what we're going to do with it or if it's worth anything, especially considering how much damaged panels go for at btcc meetings. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why is it when a race car is started up they rev them like that? Is it better than leaving the engine to just idle
@kevinpaynter
@kevinpaynter 11 месяцев назад
Cam overlap can be an issue with idle. Fuel and water vapour buildup in the inlet and or exhaust can also be an issue when idling so the blip helps clear the intake and exhaust. It also aids in moving water through the system. Because the battery voltage is lower when the car stands still, it might also be a bit more rich, so blipping again clears excess fuel out. And it sounds cool.
