Mount Everest (English: Mount Everest) is the second highest mountain in the world after Mauna Kea (if measured from sea level). Its peak ridge marks the border between Nepal and Tibet; the peak is in Tibet. In Nepal, the mountain is called Sagarmatha (सगरमाथा, Sanskrit for "Head of Heaven") and in Tibetan Chomolangma or Qomolangma ("Mother of the Universe"), pronounced in Chinese 珠穆朗瑪峰 (pinyin: Zhūmùlǎngmǎ Fēng). letters of George Mallory, one of the first British climbers to attempt to conquer Mount Everest in the 1920s, reveal the dark side of climbing the world's highest peak. Mallory participated in the first three British explorations of the slopes of Everest, namely in 1921, 1922 and 1924. Nearly a century on, Mallory's letters describe her hopes and fears about climbing Everest, right up to the final days before she and her best friend disappeared. Over the past 18 months, archivists scanned the documents in preparation for the centennial commemoration of Mallory's disappearance. The college plans to display a selection of Mallory's letters and possessions in the "George Mallory: Magdalene to the Mountain" exhibition opening June 20, 2024. Mallory's letters describe careful preparation and testing of climbing equipment as well as his optimism about the prospects for conquering the highest mountains.
