I am so happy I met Bruce Willis a few years ago-more so that he wasn't a jerk. He was buying stuff at my sporting goods store. Funny thing was I had to unfold some of the clothes he was getting to check for ink tags, and he gives me the Bruce Willis Death Stare and says, "what are you doing?" While my face is hot enough for the NSA to read it from space, one of his family says, "he's checking for beeper tags". I nod, and then get the Bruce Willis Smirk. BTW, this movie is a remake of Fistful of Dollars, which itself is a remake of Yojimbo.

All of these films draw heavy inspiration from the 1929 novel Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett. Last Man Standing is the only one that matches the time period, since Red Harvest was a detective/noir book.

This is an accurate remake of 'Yojimbo', which you really ought to react to, just to complete the cycle. 'Fistful of Dollars' was based on 'Yojimbo'; this movie is a closer copy. Cool trivia: Yojimbo means 'bodyguard, or bouncer; protector'... the point of the title is that a real bodyguard protects everyone rather than one rich, crooked, evil a$$hole.
@KudisBontasu

I named my black and white pitt bull Yojimbo
@44excalibur
@44excalibur 3 года назад
Actually, this movie is based on Dashiell Hammett's novel Red Harvest, which is what Yojimbo was based on. The Continental Op is the character that inspired the Samurai in Yojimbo and the Man With No Name in A Fistful of Dollars.
@MrBendylaw
@MrBendylaw 3 года назад
@@44excalibur I looked up 'Red Harvest', seems interesting, but somewhat removed from this plot. More complicated in the origins and motivations of its protagonist. Kurosawa apparently attributed 'The Glass Key' for inspiration, but that seems even more of a stretch, plotwise. Hmmm.
@44excalibur
@44excalibur 3 года назад
@@MrBendylaw Some elements of The Glass Key were used in Yojimbo, but most of Yojimbo is based on Red Harvest. Obviously, since Red Harvest is a noir detective thriller, it's a lot more detailed and has more depth, so many elements of the plot from Red Harvest ended up being cut out of Yojimbo and A Fistful of Dollars. Some of the female characters in Last Man Standing are based on characters in Red Harvest that do not appear in Yojimbo or A Fistful of Dollars.
@MrBendylaw
@MrBendylaw 3 года назад
@@44excalibur Yeah, I thought Last Man Standing probably had more of the synopsis of Red Harvest I read to it; particularly the female characters and the appearance of the Texas Ranger (might be my favorite speech in the film). But Kurosawa's writing is just so simple and clean and whittled down, he's more the Hemingway of auteurs in style, I think, though his plots tend to be a bit hard-boiled noir-ish.

This film erroneously claims in the credits to be based on a screenplay by Akira Kurosawa. It's referring to the movie Yojimbo, which was also the basis for A Fistful of Dollars. But they forget to mention that Yojimbo was based on the 1929 Dashiell Hammett noir crime novel, Red Harvest, featuring the mysterious detective known as the Continental Op. Last Man Standing bears more similarities to Hammett's novel than to Kurosawa's interpretation.

I like to react to reactions. As a Viking, I don't brag nor embellish. As a native Montanan, I am handy with the steel. That said, me and an acquaintance did this dual-fire .45s at the range. It doesn't happen like in the movie. Maybe we are a couple weenies, but it's like any too-much concussion + recoil. A 1991A1 and a 1911. We fired 7 shots with both guns. By the 3rd or 4th blamblam, I was struggling to not shoot my own feet. .45 ACP is slow but heavy & rocks your world.

Finally someone digs this flick! It's a great movie...a remake of a remake but a new take. Great soundtrack, loved the supporting characters. This is a remake of Kurosawa's samurai movie Yojimbo. Frankly, it works better with swords. I mean, unless you have eyes on your back, some jerk draws a gun quietly and shoots you in the back at twenty paces. Easy. God created Man, Samuel Colt made men equal. Equally easy to kill.

This movie was just a beautiful noir free fall. Just enough plot to hold up the fine cinematography and cool one liners. The gunplay is like Jazz and that soundtrack? Perfectly placed. There are better films, better plots and more worthy films, but this was so cleanly worked. It hits all the shots it goes for and doesn't try to hit more than it needs.
