This show aired on CBS 5 in Phoenix and was the second highest rated show of the day, next to the Rose Bowl...and just a half a ratings point behind. People like wild horses.
It is always a pleasure to spend time with them.

No such thing as pure Spanish in New Mexico, that is a myth. The Spanish had their children with indigenous women. Most of the women that came with Onate were Mestiza or Castiza women whose mothers or grandmothers were Nahua. Then came the intermixing with the Pueblos.

There are some truly good human beings in this video. 60 years ago I saw hundreds of wild mustangs on 50 mile cattle round-ups in the desert hills of Nevada. I rode some. What impressed me was the incredible variety of colors that they came in; combinations of rare genes that few people have ever seen.

Thank you, even though I don't care for standard definition any more, I can still watch this again and again myself. As for the comments, they are what make America great. We can be critical of the government, we can disagree, we can say what we want. If the man wants to equate them to feral hogs, I don't agree either. I do appreciate his right to say it though. We just need to enlighten him.

Len, thank you for documenting the lives of these beautiful, wild and free horses. I wish they could all keep their freedom always. The ending of your film broke my heart because the implication was that the black pregnant mare did not survive -- I hope I am wrong about that. Have you heard of the Youths' Equine Alliance (YEA)? Robin Warren is a teenager who is making an impact on the BLM in Nevada by publicly protesting the cruelty of the helicopter roundups and the shadeless holding pens. You and Robin are good people bringing attention to the plight of these beautiful symbols of American freedom. Thank you!

In response to Poopon--I understand your position. My family raised cattle and sheep in Montana. Wild horses represent the best in American spirit and domestic horses brought us out west and settled this country. This, to me, distinguishes horses from hogs. I've logged 100 plus hours in wild horse herds and haven't witnessed the destruction to the land you cite. I would have to see it first hand to support your views. @cacatr4495
@cacatr4495 5 лет назад
Yes, there is enough food for all the horses to remain. The reason they claim there isn't, is because they want millions of cattle to be given grazing preference over the wild horse. It's not an issue of forage, but what species of animal they want to have the forage. Cattle makes them money, whereas live horses don't. Wild horse herds don't double every four years, they are not over-populated like they claim. Lies are told about the horses and their numbers, because the entire cattle vs. wild horse issue is all about money. They leave out that it's actually about their money-making cattle: to do this, they claim things about the horses that aren't true.

I love mustangs and I'm not against the rounding up of a FEW individuals not a whole herd mind you but mustangs are absolutely beautiful wild animals that should be respected as such. I cannot form the words to express how valuable mustangs are but there is one story that describes them perfectly. To quote Kaitie in the movie Flicka "The history of the west was written by the horse. Wherever a settler left his foot print there was a hoof print right beside it...We need to protect them for them, for they are the hope for some kind of living memory of what the promise of America used to be, and could be again" Mustangs and other wild horses BUILT America. We wouldn't have survived without a plow horse, a cow horse, pack horse, calvary horse, we wouldnt be who we are today without horses and they deserve to be treated as the veterans they are starting with the Mustang.

This is more than just an emotional subject with the already lost and future losses of the Spanish Mustang and the other herds; this to me is a reflection of man's irresponsibility and greed. Mismanagement of God given animals, plants, and a growing list of anything inspired by nature. I don't appreciate some comments here about how destructive they are and no different than feral hogs. I looked up the Hebrew spelling of Cerbat, and it is TSadi, Resh, Bet, Tet. Neither of my Hebrew dictionaries have the whole word, but I found many examples of the first 3 charactors: Tsadi, Resh Bet. In every instance, the verb root means "BURN" and "SCORCH". Due to their home range being in the Arizona desert, I think I'm on the right track. Does anyone else have any more information about the Cerbat herd, or the origins of their name?

I don’t understand the reason for killing these amazing horses . Just exactly what have they done to warrant this. Is it the rancher wanting more and more grazing for the already over populated herds of cattle . Who’s land is this any way it surely doesn’t belong to the cattle ranchers is this not public land in which we all as Americans own . How is it that people that raise cattle have so much power that they dictate what animal gets to graze and live out it’s life on public land . These animals are wild just like the deer and elk do these horses kill your cattle I think not you fatten your cattle on public land how much do you pay to graze the free grasses is it pennies on the dollar. I say this why not leave the horses alone they do nothing to you what so ever. There is plenty of good land available to raise your cattle on but like most greedy people you have to destroy obstacles in your way so you can turn a big profit .God is watching you there is nothing you need to warrant the destruction of these beautiful animals you should be ashamed of your selves.

I do feel like it ended in a way that was a bit incomplete, as each of the heard bands were being discussed, very little attention was brought to the Montana/Wyoming heard, and nothing at all about the Oregon (Kigers?) heard/band. I wonder if anyone is interested in Louisiana's wild horses? I have never run across a reference to them, only to small bands of strayed animals gone feral. These look much like the wild herds you show, and have been locally known for generations. I have heard it said that they are remnants of the Spanish horses, either released or escaped, and some from shipwrecks. Spanish explorers certainly came through there. As a child I owned one, from the herds that run the Henderson Levee. They are beautiful, called Creole Ponies, or sometimes Levee Nags or Levee Horses. They are small, sturdy, fine featured and quick. They are very agile and make great cutting or trail ride horses. Mine, with her mother, was captured at about 5 days old. Mom was about 12, and never really tamed down. Most of them don't need to be shod, having very neat, sturdy hooves. The other herds live in the coastal marshes around Terrebonne Parish in South Louisiana. Many a fisherman or hunter has seen them start from the marsh grass at the sound of a boat motor and take to the water to escape, disappearing among the little swamp islands. I wish someone would check them out before its too late.

The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in South Dakota has a herd of the pure Spanish horses running on their 13.000 acres of prairies and canyons. These horses came from the Pryors. They also have a herd of the extremely rare "curlies", horses with curly coats and manes, just beautiful. Considering the BLM is currently going state by state, first in Montana, and now being fought in Wyoming, exterminating the wild horse herds. The herds are rounded up en masse, loaded onto trucks, and shipped to Canadian and Mexican slaughter houses. Mares, foals, stallions all crushed onto trucks and rail cars with no food or water for days to the horrors of the kill floors.
@kerryobrien6299
@kerryobrien6299 4 года назад
That is so untrue. Approximately 1% of horses going to slaughter are BLM mustangs and usually those are titled, meaning privately owned. Most are thoroughbreds and quarter horses. Yes the slaughter business is ugly, but get your facts straight. There are no "pure" Spanish horses either. Geez, the romance.

They say the horses are non-native, feral and destructive. I didn't know that some people have been trying to wipe out an entire herds of wild horses for years. HI, I think the definition of save is tricky. There are a couple of reputable horse refuges that have shown interest in taking them. That would move them out of state, and I am against that. I honestly think the best thing is the limited housing expanding around the Cerbats. If it remains limited, the horses will be surrounded by non-cattle types--probably horse lovers. If too many houses go in, there's bound to be someone complaining. I need to go back up there and take a look.

Does this video say anything about the legendary Asturcón horse, which still lives on in our Asturian mountains? Do you know that it was the legendary horse of the ancient Astures, the last hispanic people to be conquered by Rome in a war that took longer than Julius Caesar's Conquest of Gaul? Even Nero had one asturcón, which competed in the Roman circus. This horse belongs to the Celtic horses and is distinguished by its passage, called "paso de andadura". Greetings.

Pablo I didn't mention that horse...the Cerbats are primarily Andalusian blood from the south of Spain. The Asturcon are interesting to me...they have a Cerbat/wild pony look to them that I've always thought was exciting. I didn't know the history you are sharing though and am finding it to be pretty cool. Those crazy Romans. Yet so rich in culture. Thanks so much for sharing and sorry it took me a bit to get back.

The wild herds of these beautiful horses must be saved for the nation. I don't know how feasible it would be, but here in Ireland we have the lovely Connemara pony, these ponies run semi wild over parts of Connemara, but are mostly owned by farmers. These ponies were originally from the Spanish Armada ships that were wrecked in a great storm. For the past 60 to 70 years the Irish government released a stallion (thoroughbred) called Little Heaven by Hyperion, to improve the breed, this greatly enhanced the Connemara, into a type bred for riding, Many great Show jumpers have come from these bloodlines, including The Great Stroller that was owned by Marian Coax and competed at Wembley and The white City, The Great DUNDRUM ridden By Tommy Wade, winning the high jump 7 feet 3 inches at the White City, and wining the Aga Khan Trophy for Ireland in Dublin, he was a small horse standing 15.1h.h. but could take on the best in show jumping, Blue Heaven another great performer. Would this work for some of these wonderful herds of horses, that their foals could be trained for use as riding horses and competition horses. Would it be possible to release a decent thoroughbred horse to improve the quality of these wild horses. This is just a idea. Thank you to all you wonderful people out there that are trying to save these horses. And to you government officials that are trying to destroy them, hang your heads in shame. While I am not stupid I know that at certain times you may have to cull old and inferm horses, this should be done with as little pain and as humanely as possible. Rounding up with hello copters is a no brained. Thank you for reading, and remember these are all GOD'S CREATURES and we have a responsibility to look after them. Thank you for reading this and GOD bless you and greetings from Northern Ireland.

Mel Hawk Thank you for this information . The mustang is a beautiful horse, it is a wild horse, and releasing the TB To improve the breed can only enhance this incredible breed of horse. Greetings from Northern Ireland.

Hi, did I reply to this? Sorry if I didn't. I did the kick shot to show how we accept they way we treat horses as normal when actually it's not. I grew up at horse shows and they did this all the time. I think the people doing it loved their horses--they just got used to yanking them around and kicking them. Wild horses don't get yanked and kicked in the wild. Sounds like we're kind of on the same page here, though. Thanks for the comment.

Horses don’t get kicked in the wild ? you don’t know anything about horses maybe you should watch some wild horses and watch how much they kick each other you can’t kick nearly as hard as they kick each other.I wish people would stay out of the stuff they not know anything about hush
@Mustang8ify
@Mustang8ify 3 года назад
Yes, sure. I mean I only logged like...100 hours watching wild horses in the wild...grew up with horses...fed them...trained them...rode them... so your logic, if I get this right, is that because a human kicks a horse in the video, that means I don't know anything about wild horses or horses in general. I don't understand your logic.

It just seem like no one cares about the horses. Being a fan of Spirit this does not surprise me what we did for horses dominance but seeing something like this really hit it home thx for posting it.

Winter Lion. John Fusco, the screenwriter for Spirit and writer for the Disney movie Hidalgo is very much involved in saving the Colonial Spanish/ Spanish Mustang Horses. :-) This quote below is from the Horse of The Americas FB page "For those who may not know, John Fusco purchased the defunct/ in-active Horse of the Americas Registry from Mr. Jeff Edwards in the late 90s. After many emails and other correspondence, John sent the registry archives to Vickie Ives in Texas. HOA was re-incorporated in 2000 and flourishes today thanks to all our members. John is a LIfetime Member, a horseman, and a Mustanger." www.imdb.com/name/nm0299301/

Winter Lion I have edited 20 minutes of a follow-up documentary, Last of the Spanish Mustangs 2...and know it will make you feel better. I focus on just the Cerbats and to be honest...and I bite my lip when I say this...the BLM has done a decent job with this herd and it is thriving without roundups. It will make you feel better. It did me.

Wild horses need to be protected by people that care. The BlM only looks at the money for them. Animals were not put on this earth to be harmed. They are smart and should be left alone. It is the humans who are at fault.

There are mustangs in Saskatchewan. On Native ground. Genuine wild - never helicoptered, never touched. Plus according to the Native American History there were always horses in NA, they did not just come from the Spanish horses.. They have been very, very protected. The horse is to chose you not the other way around.

" according to the Native American History there were always horses in NA, they did not just come from the Spanish horses" Sources pls. I just want to see if these sources say that cars, electricity and internet already existed in América, invented by the native americans.

Not related to the American horses. the Canadian Wildies have completely different bloodlines passed down from horses brought over from Quebec (Canadians), Russia (Yakut) and other domestic horses that were brought across the country by settlers and miners, et cetera. They are not of Spanish descent and they not always here; the first modern horse to set foot in Canada came from France, sent to New France by King Louis XIV.

Thank-you for this story. I love mustangs and could care less about the boo hoo ranchers, the cause of most of the mustang's problems. Rancher's rent the government land, that the mustang's roam, for a disgustingly low price, so the mustang must go. Also, yet again human cruelty to animals makes me disgusted and the government's "two faced" B S makes me sickened to be a part of the human race. Anyone who knows anything about American History should realize that "we" could not have "Conquered the Western States" without the horse. The Wild Horses should be revered, respected, and protected. I hope that your new film shows improvement in the handling and care of these majestic and noble animals.

Thank you for the thoughtful response. I have great friends who are ranchers, though, and we get along just fine. I joke to one that I am going to sneak a few mustangs onto his land. I hear you though...you make good points.

I have to ask.. At the beginning, around 0:44, there was a quick, split second shot of a woman? holding a bay horse and kicked it right in the gut? What exactly was that? Why would you put that in this show? Thanks.. I have 2 American Mustangs from Wyoming.. They are all an amazing 'breed' of animal.. So different than their cousins, the domestic horses... Sure wish more folks understood them and realized these horses belong to ALL of us... Awesome video, Thank you!

American history says that Spanish horses played a crucial role in colonising a part of Americas in 16th century.These poor but elegant creatures were the main source of fast mobility till the arrival of automobiles.But now these are mainly used for ceremonial occasions or for racing purposes.We need to leave them to their rightful place in the wild.
