If you are an upstart creative, and don't know if you want to get into film effects, concept art, or game art, put a boost in your portfolio by getting some experience doing some of your own film effects. It does not have to be hard to get started.

I've been wanting to become a concept artist since I was kid, and this channel has really pushed me, since I found it, to actually work to become one. I love your channel broshake and I can't wait to see what other amazing things you come up with!

Hey, by the way I wanted to ask you, and I don't know if you've possibly said this in a previous video or comment, but what is your job at riot? Like what exactly as an artist do you particularly work on.

Rob I have to say I've been following your videos for a while and I absolutely love your advice about the industry and your work overall. I feel like the gaming industry can be so "locked behind closed doors" that its hard to learn about the heart industry. I've been creating art digitally for a few years now and its great to know you had something to do with it. Keep up the great work man. Looking forward to seeing more videos from you in the future!

Nice! Just go after it by going to museums, lectures, workshops and events. Don't hold back from doing those experiences, they make you a better artist.

Great video Rob! I can tell anyone who is thinking about getting CCl, it's so worth it. I'm getting it for 20$ a month because I'm a student and you learn soo much with it. I pay for my subscription and then some just by using Illustrator to make logos for E-Sports teams. On top of that, I've learned so much about video editing, motion graphics, and graphic design just by using Premiere and After Effects. It really does open up so many creative projects to have all those other tools along with Photoshop.

I really do think they doa fantastic product. I know it's a few bux, but you really can make a career just learning and using the entire suite. Keep at it.

Would be awome to being able to buy a gumroad version of this piece with the entire process recorded realtime (or speedup, i'm gonna slow it down in vlc anyway) without commentary or anything that is gonna take you too much time. Anyway thank you for sharing it free here in the first place :)

Solid idea, yeah real time was a few hours, maybe 6? The hardest part for me was trying to figure out the glow in AE, I never quite got where I wanted with that. I actually don't mind posting the long stuff, but I figured out that ytube takes a big shit on me with the algorithm when I do.

What would doing this kind of stuff be as a career? Job title and degree? I'm trying to figure out what to go to college for and almost every public college has graphic design and illustration, but I don't particularly like logos and typography and illustration degrees havent included digital drawings, only paper and stuff from what ive seen. Also may i have your opinion on private art schools? Great video btw, the finished product looks amazing!

Hey Mr Brown! I just discovered your channel! I currently , to me, I feel like I am bad at drawing but I am working on it. I am a graphic design student at the moment, but I came to a realization that graphic designers are very corporate hipsters lol. I was wondering how to get into concept art without school. I currently do not have the funds nor the talent to get a scholarship

The good thing is that concept art is mainly based on your portfolio, so as long as you can draw well you can move forward. Start watching all the tutorials, and getting some wrist time in. There are also a lot of facebook groups, and forums, become a part of those communities too.

I really like your stuff but I'm really new to all this. Will you do an official list of gear and tools you use? Like your tablets, computers, software, etc. I'm unsure of what I'd need in order to get into concept art. Thanks!
@RobBrownTV

Watch that vid I did of art kits. Really to start, you only need a pen and paper. In the high level, the preferred setup, is adobe CC, a cintiq 22, and a fairly decent laptop, but that is at the top. Usually people get an affordable computer two monitors and a medium sized wacom drawing pad.

+Rob Brown Sweet, thanks buddy. I'll see what I can get together! I'll still be using pen and paper all the time though. I'll never move past that.

Firstly, fantastic work! I want to be a concept artist and I would like to make this kind of images, do you think I can do this kind of paintings only in photoshop? It's that I do not have great experience in 3D, and I also do not want to be confused with a matte painter (if that's possibel) when I'm applying for a position of concept artist.
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
For sure you can. I have made photoshop look like 3d many times, and if you get CC, there is a small 3d component worked into it too. To not be confused as a matte painter, just put some rough edges on the very edge of the painting ;). You can also fade out the background so people don't think you are trying to make a picture.

Hey Rob, do you think it's possible to do both RU-vid and work as a professional? I kinda like doing RU-vid videos and challenges now that I'm a mediocre artist but I'm scared it'll have negative effects with my clients later when I want to work professionally. (Also thanks for being awesome, dude.)

You know I am finding it harder to youtube and work in a studio than I did youtubing and freelancing. As a freelancer I could spin yarns about whatever.. but in a studio if I tell a crazy story, someone is going to wonder if it is about the project at hand. I talked to my most respected peer about it in the studio, and he said 'why would you want to work in a place that would not let you do both?'. It was cool he said that, but I still see a risk. For me, I try not to say this is the only way to do things.. that way I don't sound like a know it all in a couple years with some bad information. So for you, make sure you don't over extend your experience into things you can't qualify. So if you are learning, maybe phrase your videos in a way that enhances the pieces you are learning, and turn your growth into a positive, instead of posing it as a negative. Cheers!

hey rob, i want to go to Art Center in Pasadena.. and I was wondering if Entertainment Art/Design is an appropriate major for concept artists. A second option would be Art Institutes of Hollywood with a major of Game Art/Design. Which do u recommend and why? thanks, Lily
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
Hi Lily, I love ACCD, and I love the Entertainment program for concept artists. I am sure there are a million things to consider, but one is, that there are many ACCD alumni, and they like to hire alumni. We share the same vocabulary, skill sets, and drive. I am biased, so make sure you look into your other options ,and what their alumni are doing too.

whats the difference between a concept artist working in the film industry and game industry
@RobBrownTV
@RobBrownTV 7 лет назад
They are pretty close nowadays. I think game artists have more chances of working on a variety of things from one day to another, environments, characters, marketing art, interface and film artists will mainly work on a smaller section of things, just environments, or just fashion, or just characters. I personally find that film artists are pressured to work faster, but that is not the same in every studio.

This is not the video I should put this comment on but this is the latest one soo ya! ... Actually I was searching for schools that give us good courses for becoming a concept artist and I found this school Syn Studio. Is it a good one. It would be really helpful if I get your views about it .. I have see your video on how to select a school every thing seems to be fine but If you just look at the staff there and let me know that would be so helpful 👍
