Great vid. To my ear, John’s tone on this is another nod to Mr. Clapton, it’s really reminiscent of the 24 Nights version of Wonderful Tonight.

The tone in the ballad version is much less compressed for sure! Not his usual fat and smooth tone, but I like it. There are a couple parts where he does some of those syncopated unison bends (is that the right term? lol) where the tone really barks at us. Kind of cool and unexpected since I would never expect that from his tone. Very vintage Black Plate (keeping it PC) Princeton type of tone there. Great video dude! And yes, after this version was released, I'm feeling some more singles coming out of live studio performances!

I would love for John to troll us all and put a 2 rock amp innards in a Marshall or Hiwatt head cabinet. Just throw us off for days just to keep us guessing.

Two things: 1) The PRS Custom Amp was "1 of 20" only in the sense of the tolex and grill cloth - they made more (but not many more) PRS Custom 20's in other grill cloth/tolex combos. I have a USA-built Custom 20 with the same badge - it's the same amp. 2) It looks like there's an AXEFX 3 to John's left underneath a cloth with the bottles on top. You can see the blue screens shining through.

I do love this stuff... Thanks again for the fix! haha Something I have just noticed in your vid is that I use the same straps as he does!.... Dimarzio 'Clip locks'. I think he has his upside down or inside out (as you cant see the little Dimarzio tag). I have used them for years and love them. I wouldnt be putting them on a vintage instrument any time soon, but they are really comfortable and very utilitarian. If you have the means, I highly recommend checking them out! ;)

Yup! I have one on my Mayer Strat! You can actually just remove the logo if you’re really careful! Pretty sure that’s what he does. They are great straps, make sure you get an extender if you use it on a Silver Sky cause I know way too many people who have chips now cause of that strap!

Controversial opinion, but speaking of your thoughts on preferring DRH’s amp rig…when I saw JM in Sydney on the 2019 world tour, DRH had the best tone over JM and Sharkey. Mayer’s tone was a bit aggressive/harsh and Sharkey’s was along the same lines. DRH had the smoothest, lushest, biggest tone and it was just beautiful! That was hard to say, cause Sharkey is my favourite player, and Mayer got me started playing and I always look to him for tone!

That yellow makes me think maybe a Boss overdrive but not sure it looks like a boss pedal. Maybe an MXR as the knobs are hidden behind the stand and there is a big gap with no foot switch?
