Thank you for documenting your journey! You have given such an accurate and real depiction of what the life of a teacher is. You have actually inspired me to teach 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade in the near future! 😀 You have also inspired me to continue towards the pursuit of my elementary teacher certification! May God continue to bless and keep you! 😀

Hi from England :) I'm not a teacher but a parent who is looking to retraining as a teacher. It is so cool to see all the differences between teaching and schools in England and in the US. For example your video the other day about end of year gifts for the students - we don't do anything like that in the UK although teachers will sometimes give students a candy at the end of the year lol! I just wanted to ask what your thoughts are on celebrating attendance? Here in England schools will sometimes throw a party or provide a small treat for classrooms with the best attendance however it is controversial because often attendance is poor due to factors outside of the students control such as home life issues or illness so in a way it feels wrong to exclude children who are sick or have other issues from having treats. Would be interested to hear your thoughts on this and how this is viewed in the US :)
@AClassroomDiva
@AClassroomDiva 7 лет назад
Hi Lucy, I actually don't completely agree with the attendance celebration where students get bikes, even though this is a school-wide celebration they have been doing for years. I think attendance can still be celebrated, but not to that extent. As you said, a lot of absences are out of the students' control, which is especially true at our school! So, honestly, I do not agree that the students should get a bike solely on perfect attendance. Some of the students received sweatshirts for "almost perfect" attendance, which I think is alright. But you are SO right that it excludes a lot of children whose parents may just keep them home, take them on trips, or if the student is sick. I agree with you! :)

You really have inspired me to follow my dreams. From the time I was in 5th grade up until my senior year I volunteered in a kindergarten classroom, actually my personal kinder teacher lol. So when I graduated I went to college to be a teacher and recently a year ago I stopped because I just wasn't sure. I never really got to see what all a teacher goes through because I just helped the teacher get the kiddos ready to go home. So by watching your videos I am and will be going to college to become a teacher. Thank you for all that you do :)

I am struggling somewhat with the same thing for moving and my personal advice is to sub. Like you said, it would affect the kids having two teachers. If you sub, you can pack and leave and not have to worry about a full time job getting in the way.

You seem like an amazing teacher and are so thoughtful! My most memorable teachers were just like you, and I also have teachers that were memorable in bad ways (there were more abusive, discriminatory, bullying teachers). I can't wait to see your coming year videos! Please keep up the wonderful work! You might not see the difference you make until years later, if at all, but know you are making a wonderful difference in most of the children!

I just wanted to say that I LOVE your videos and they've really helped to give me the kick in the rear that I've been needing to get back to school and pursue teaching. Ever since I was a kid I have wanted to be a teacher (particularly a first grade teacher), but when I went to college I didn't really have much support in my personal life to do teaching, and I let that influence my choice of major. I graduated December 2016 with a degree in a field that I generally do like, however the likelihood of me being about to get be employed to use my skills is not looking good. Upon accepting that realization, my mind has wandered back to what I originally wanted to do, which has lead me to your videos. Last week I had a meeting with my local junior college and submitted my application to start my first two years. I will basically be starting over (my degree was very specific, so only about 3-4 of my classes are transferrable), but binging on your videos has truly helped ease my anxiety about the change of careers. Sorry for the wall of text... I just wanted to let you know that you're helping me do what I have always wanted to do. :) Enjoy your summer.

I was so shocked as a senior this year when I walked into my ap lit class and all of the posters on the wall and decorations were all gone. The wall looked so bright and barren and everyone was so surprised and sad. We love our lit teacher and it was just so abrupt and sudden to realize the year was coming to an end, even though we were seniors and ready to get out of there!!!!! But yeah it's a surprise to everyone whatever age to see the room all packed up!

I just came across you videos and I love them! I envy you and wish I could be that creative and organized. I have been teaching for just about the same amount of time as you, I have been a substitute for all different classrooms in the elementary school level (including gym, music, art, etc.) and these past two years have been a pre-k teacher. Last year I worked for Head Start which is a program for 3-5 year olds that cannot afford school and need a program to prepare them for kindergarten. That was one of the hardest years of my life. I had the worst behaved kids I have ever seen, because of their home life and demographics. I, being this nice, quiet, petite teacher, had absolute no impact on them because they were used to being yelled at and thrown around at home. This year I have a new job and my kids are much better, but there are still those kids that no matter what you do, they will still act out and refuse to listen. I teach pre-k as well as 5th graders at Hebrew school on the side. My little ones have trouble following directions and my oder ones just do not want to be there after a long day of school, so no matter what I do, they are "bored" and unmotivated. Can you do a video on classroom management techniques and how you get your kiddos motivated and listening? I would love to hear you ideas! I hope you had a great end of the school year!
@AClassroomDiva
@AClassroomDiva 7 лет назад
I completely understand where you are coming from with talking about Head Start. Most of the kiddos that are in our school go to Head Start, if they go to a program at all. Picture those behaviors, only with third graders who are almost as tall as you! :) I have a few videos on classroom management already that TRULY helped with these particular kiddos! You may find them helpful. Thank you so much for watching!!!

As a student who had gone through multiple teachers that had left in the middle of the year, I highly recommend you to just substitute as a teacher around the county instead of going for half a year and leaving because in my experience, since there was no teacher we had way too many substitutes which didn't teach the full extent of the required content and didn't really do it as well as a full time teacher who actually got to know their students. In middle school a teacher that had left in the middle of the year caused many of the kids to fail the exams because they weren't able to study for all the content that was on the exam and the content wasn't fully taught to us. I had barely even passed the exam because of my previous background in that subject area.

I think you should sub. I agree it would impact the students negatively if you left midyear. Loved your classroom tour and the gifts you made for students and colleagues. You're so generous!

I'm going through 6th grade and I have a Cheer camp this summer in our gym and we stay four like 5 hours to practice(or more), yes during the summer we are competitive but after school starts we only to pep rallys and football games. so that's my summer and I'm going 2 states over to visit family and I get to sit in a hotel room doing nothing until that Friday night so that mean I sit in a hotel room for 24 hours so again that's my summer.😛

If you know where you are moving to and it isn't too far from where you currently live, maybe you could look for a teaching position in that area.

I'm actually a student who watches these videos I'm in sixth going on to seventh and I just wanna let u know that u shouldn't let the kids have that experience in the middle of the year. I've had that experience and it's not a good one it was not fun I didn't want to listen to the new teacher and most students in my class hated the fact we couldn;t have are teacher here. Please don't do it's just don't it's not good for the kids. And I was actually in third grade during that experience it really hit me hard. I felt like the teacher was abandoning us and didn't want to be around us I cried so much. My mom tried to get me to understand. That teacher is still my favorite I'm actually in touch with her so if u do decide to do it just let your kids know it's not there fault it's not because of them at all it's just a decision u had to make. Let them know you love them mabey by throwing a little party in the class or bringing in a small treat just to make them feel more excited that day instead of sad. Also warn your kids at the beginning of the year, not a week before you move it makes them feel more prepared and more ready for the move. I personally just feel like you should just sub instead.

Hi I just heard you say that some of your students are Indigenous. I work at an Indigenous/Aboriginal school in Australia. Where abouts are you in America? I have only been watching your vlogs over the last couple of months and have enjoyed listening to your vlogs. I also have a vlog called Teaching Daytwoday and we do not finish our school year until December. Will you be doing any vlogs during your holidays? Have a great break.
