The Twin Cam 103 is where Harley-Davidson took all they years of twin cam improvements and put it in one place. If your looking for a late model twin cam Harley most all of them are going to be powered by the 103, with exception of CVO models. These motors already produce more power stock than previous versions in the 88 and 96 inch, but what if you want more? We'll take a look at the ways to get more power and just how much these parts going cost.

The 103/96 is a rock solid engine despite what you read on the internet 😂 there’s a lot of guys that own shops that want you to think their garbage to sell you parts. Sure the early 88s have some issues but the twin cam 103/96 is pretty bulletproof
@GixxerFoo

They really are solid engines, you hear of a 1,000 failures in a sea of millions of engines that have run for years without issue and the focus is on the failure.

@@GixxerFoo that Baxter guy is the worst, or Tman, they have some good info, but if you listen to them for 10 minutes you’d think every single Harley on the road was an oil leaking crank out of spec piece of crap and they’re really not 😂 the other problem is people run to the forums and make a “has anyone had this issue” post every time a part fails on a bike…Harley’s are very reliable quality motorcycles that are mass produced, anything that’s mass produced has a lemon here and there and has parts failure here and there, it’s nothing new.

I used to get 41-42 with detergent oil. I had a 2005 Road King Classic before this one. I bought the 2015 Road Glide Special out here in Cali and with the smog is was a DOG! Ran hotter than hell, didn't get 200 miles on a tank and had no throttle in 5th & 6th gears. Purchased the Screaming Eagle race tuner. Installed a Roland Sands intake and Reinhart slip ons'. Took the stock exhaust off, emptied out the catalytic converter chamber and reinstalled it. Had to take it to Arizona to have it dyno tuned. Like a brand new bike. 92 hp with 113 torque. Runs way cooler, 240 degrees when it's 100 degrees outside. I get 230 to 240 miles on a six gallon tank. And of course, it's not the fastest bike but nobody leaves me in the dust. This thing is a rocket ship recliner. These days Harley is begging me to trade this in on the M8. Thing is how do I take the Cali smog off this thing and pump it up like every other Harley I've owned? The stage kits are crap and full of problems. These things eat, breath and fart. You improve this on the Harley it's like you have a brand new bike.

It’s all in the heads ! My 2015 RK I used my stock pistons and sent the heads to zippers performance for there mildest CNC port they offer called 1.8 for the slightly larger intake valves 700$. Put it back together with.030 head gasket and heads decked made it 10.25 comp. I already had Andrews 57h cams & powervision with cobra power port headers & SE street cannons. So this is the cheapest big gain set up you can get. & never even had to remove my cylinders. Had it dynoed with the powervision & ended up with 108 hp & 116 TQ & a very happy customer 👍 I did it with 14000 miles on it. I have a Two 103 touring bikes..2015 RK, 2016 SG Special....love them. I also have a 2019 RK Special and a 2019 Fat boy with 114 M8s. Yes the M8 have more power but I still love my Twin Cams. Let's face it HD has to make engine mods. Other than paint how can a HD be improved. One of my Twin Cams has 78k miles and she runs like a dream. The M8 blow oil smoke sometimes and you definitely smell oil burning on start up. Most of my family think the engine sucks. Only because HD has not come clean about this engine. First the oil migration to the primary and now HD is on their third oil pump improvement....not to exclude the new M8 oil filter they rolled out....why? My two M8 only have 6300k miles between them so time will tell. They both are getting the new SS came plate and oil pump in Oct 2020 when I have time to replace them.

Have you had your M8's in for all the updates? I saw they started drilling the case on the primary side and putting a vent/return tube in there. Seems like something they would of caught in development. I've talked to several people that came from a TC to an M8 and they said the same thing.

Excellent information! In my opinion, best knowledge about Harley-Davidson engines in the last three decades. A quick question. I am considering buying a Tri Glide. Choice between a 2017 or newer M8 or going back a few years earlier to a 103. It looks like upgrading a 103 to get some more torque is a great option. Problem is I could get a 2017 used for only $1,000 more. I'm not a speed freak, I'm just concerned about the big three wheeler moving when I need it to. What would you do and why? Thanks for any reply
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
Thank you! The trikes really needed the extra power of the 107 and 114 M8's, but the 103 does very well and a cam swap will really get the horsepower and torque where it needs to be to really pull a trike. Now the 2017 M8 had oil sumping and oil pump issues, I would take the VIN to a dealer and see if it had any warranty work done. 2017 engines with the original oil pump design had the issues and Harley replaced those with a newer designed unit under warranty. If you are able to verify that I would go with the M8. But the twin cam 103 is tried and true, they got the issues with the twin cam worked out on the 103 and of course they changed over to M8 shortly after. My opinion is the 103 is less likely to have an issue vs. the 2017 M8 which was the first year of that motor, I've had some bad experience with the first years but that's just me.

I should have read a LOT more about the 88 because I found a decent LR with the 88 with everything I wanted on it---low mileage, rack/bags/shield/engine guard/back rest/ and good paint and not bad for rust. It has been one problem after another. Over and over , thousands spent just to get it running AND haven't even't replaced the chain tensioners yet. Such a disappointment. SO, spend some extra money and buy a late model 96 or the 103. Even a nice 88 with low mileage COULD be a real POS.

Then 88's were really hit and miss, some were flawless and others had all the known issues. The later year 88's weren't too bad but the 96 had the issues corrected by then.

Thanks for your great videos! They are super helpful without being overly technical. I recently bought a 2016 Fat Bob that was almost new, only 230 miles on it. It has the 103 HO engine. I put about 2500 miles on it before winter shut me down. I am looking to give it some performance upgrades over the winter as it is still completely stock. What would you do if it was your bike and you had a winter to do it? If you need a budget let’s say $7500. I am looking to do the work myself so it can all go for parts. I am looking at a 2-1 exhaust system like the V&H Pro Pipe, and a set of Wood TW-222 cams, S&S cam plate and high volume oil pump (mostly based on your video- thanks!), and a Powervision tuner (from your video too-thanks!). So far all I’ve purchased is a K&N RK-3934 air intake system which I replumbed the breathers on to keep oil and hot gas out of my intake (also based on another of your videos- thanks again!). What else should I do to gain some power or make it run better without replacing the jugs or bumping up the displacement? What kind of a performance increase could I potentially get if I were to have my heads ported and polished or even replaced? Not scared to spend the money as long as I get something in return. Thanks again for your great videos I watch all of them. Hope you can respond, your opinions would be most helpful! Merry Christmas!

If you are looking to re-build an engine with the goal of power, it'd be better to score a 110 engine and use the 117 'drop-in' cylinders as the heads are a much better casting. Get the heads fitted with bigger valves and port them and your numbers can be over 140 in torque and horsepower. If it is a rubber mount bike though you will have to upgrade the engine mounts in order to stop the dreaded 'death-wobble'.
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
I've heard of the death wobble and know some guys who had monster S&S Dyna Engine builds that experienced it. There are after market stabilizer links for the engine mounts out there and they do wonders!
@thakery5720
@thakery5720 3 года назад
@@GixxerFoo Yes, but stabilisers are not enough when you get up to high power levels - you need different mounts. I use ones from Big Bear Performance as they offer a little sideways adjustment on the front mount that enables you to get the wheels aligned properly. My Sporty's mounts were old and buggered so I fitted ones from Drag Spec as they are firmer and the handling on my Sporty is great now. If you were to see my bikes you would be in awe as so much is changed or altered..... my brother in law says it's easier to remember what parts I haven't changed, modified or re-engineered. I have had the bikes 11 years now and it is a constantly evolving situation. I really like the gear drive systems and they are great for the 88's with spring tensioners. The gear drive have more accurate timing but they depend on the main shaft run out being a max of .003. Not only for installation but throughout it's life cycle, if it's any more than that you'll need a new crank or stay with the chain system. The late model bikes like yours have done great with the hydraulic tensioner system, it just need to be inspected about every 50k to be safe. The 103's do have the stock compensator, but they haven't failed like they did on the 96. Personally I wouldn't change it unless I was having a problem. Just don't go back with OEM if you have a failure, go with the Screamin Eagle.

You're right, there was a variant of the 103 before 2009, it was a limited edition engine for the CVO models. These engines weren't mass produced, they only built maybe 150 per model a year as CVO models are limited production. The 103 before 2009 had way more in common with the 88, including the spring tensioner system, heads, cams, compression ratio and a 5 speed transmission. The 103 that came out in 2009 was for the mass produced touring bikes and had all the updates of 96, I should of clarified that in the video that it covering the mass produced version.

If you plan to go that far with the bike and the mileage that it has on the current lower end I would go ahead and do the crank. I also have been told my bike is quick having the 2 into 2 exhaust and louder than the stock harleys coming from the show room floor

I know this post is old but here is my question. 2013 Tri Glide. Will be installing woods 222 cam. S&S High volume oil pump and cam plate with S&S lifters with adjustable pushrods. DK customs 606 high flow breather with factory cat deleted headers and gutted VH pipes. What numbers should I expect to see out of this setup? Power vision tuner. Is there a better woods cam for this setup? Trying to stay with drop in cam setup while gaining torque along with some top end speed. Tavel in the mountains and out west pulling a trailer at times. Will be making the Sturgis run next year pulling trailer. Trying to also keep a reasonable fuel milage.

Wood 222 is going to be the best all around bolt in for your setup, that cam really excels in heavy bikes with the torque curve and top end power. With a catless factory head pipe and V&H mufflers and a power vision canned tune for the setup you should land around 90 to 95 horsepower and north of 100 foot pounds of torque.

Bore the 103 cylinders to 3.975". Have the heads ported. Choose a good cam. Get it tuned. Easy 120 squared and reliable.

There's a lot of potential in those 103's without going completely over board, getting them tuned properly is the key!

If I was going to put that kind of money into it I would look at Zippers kits...way better bang for the buck

Oh no doubt after market is the way to go on these, more power and honestly better quality in my opinion.

When I bought my 2013 Road King off the showroom floor it had a stage 3 kit and an aftermarket exhaust from the dealership in Victoria, BC. It would snap my head back when I twisted the throttle on the freeway. Does the stage 3 kit mean it has 110" cylinders? I need to buy rings for the rebuild, what size rings would they be? Thanks for the vid!

On the 103 there were so many different variations of the stage 3 kit at that time it would be hard to tell without tearing the bike down measuring the bore. Since it was done by a dealer you can have your Vin number run at a dealer and they will be able to tell you everything done at a dealer on that bike. At that time there were stage 3 110 jug kits but also high compression stage 3 kits with cams too.

@@GixxerFoo thanks, the dealership is out of business. I had a wreck several years ago and it's slow going getting all the parts together that were messed up, I'm still saving up and looking for a frame. I have the engine torn down, ready to put it in S&S cases. What would the bore be for the 103 and 110 respectively? The dealership is elusive about the answers (I think they want me to just buy a bike from them, but I have an '83 sportster that will do for now.)
