The Twin Cam 103 With Hidden Secrets | Harley-Davidson CVO 103

Harley-Davidson's CVO team introduced a very special engine built right out of the Screamin Eagle Catalog. The 2003 CVO introduced the world to the Twin Cam 103, but this 103 wasn't exactly the same engine as the production 103 of the 2010 model year. It had some special pieces inside that not only set it apart, but produced some big torque right off the line.

Do you think the CVO 103 being a stroked 88 would run off and leave a CVO 110?

The 103+ heads back then were proven to be some of the best, if not the best Twin Cam heads ever. They are hard to find now and spendy. Wish I'd have picked a set of them up ten years ago or so. They were relatively easy to find then and relatively cheap. Kind of a well kept secret as far as heads go.

Thanks for the info! I have heard bone stock they held the motor down, then I've heard they are great with a little head porting, then I've been told they were junk. I still believe they were some pretty damn good heads, they really cam to life with some head porting and yes they are very hard to find these days!

Thank you! I truly appreciate that! That's exactly why I started the channel, I saw too many people excited and thrilled to finally get a Harley and not know exactly what they bought. You get an 88 cheap and then need 4500 for a new engine from a cam chain failure not knowing that was an issue. Killed me seeing things like that.

I ride an '05 Ultra with a SE103 Stage I built new by the dealer (American Eagle H-D) in Texas. All H-D , 10.5:1 pistons, SE255 Cams, Clutch, SE Mufflers, and SE Race Tuner Kit. Dyno at 500 miles = 95.44 HP and 103.98 Torque. This bike has 87,977 miles on her. It has all original parts - Clutch, starter, mufflers, Trans, even hand grips. (on her 3rd stator) Used SYN3 oil in Primary, Trans, and Crank since new. YES it has a H-D oil cooler. This bike is better than new. She still begs for that triple digit run. A bad ass machine no doubt. I truly enjoy your videos. Great information. Keep it up.

This is similar to the engine in my 103 Police edition Road King. I'm not sure if it was ordered from the factory with a stroked out 103 with the larger cylinders, like an '03 CVO engine, or if it was built later. When I bought the bike, I wanted to make sure that I had performance at highway speeds. It has tremendous torque and is very fast for an old touring bike. It quickly hits 80 in 4th gear, and easily cruises at faster speeds in 5th. In fact, when I get to a 55 or 60 mph stretch of interstate, I have to down shift. It feels like more power than my 2020 Low Rider S that I sold because I wanted a better highway bike. It has a power tuner, a huge cam, and no screamin' eagle logo on the heads, so I am thinking it was some kind of police 103 modified for more power later. I DEFINATELY recommend a stroker build, if you want the performance of a newer 35 to 45k Harley on your old paid-for touring bike.

Another great video my friend! I remember in one of your recent vids you said that there’s a difference in cvo heads and high flow screaming eagle heads. Can you tell the difference from how they look externally? If the flow rates are different how bout the springs and etc. ? Thanks in advance
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
Externally they look the same, but if you have the two heads off and side by side you can immediately tell the Screamin Eagle Heads have a much larger combustion chambers. Also the SE heads, depending which set, they will have over sized valves, head gasket milling for compression, and valve springs to handle aggressive cams. CVO heads have some mild porting, stiffer valve springs for the larger cams that come with the CVO.

the 103 motor on my 2014 ultra with a stage 1 and vance n hines header pipe, n vance n hines highout put slip ons, had lots of low end torque and ran strong up n down hills with minumum down shifting, it can strong but on the freeway my speed was topped at about 86 mph pushing it harder there just wasnt nothing more it felt like I needed another gear to upshift, now my older 2010 ultra limited I just down shifted more on the hills, but on the freeway that bike would get up to 110 mph no problem at all compared to my 2014 103, so my first new Harley is a 2021 new road glide limted with a 114 engine, I put a stage 2 on it before bringing it home screaming eagle cam, n vance n hine power duals with rinehart slip ons, talk about a very loud bike n the idle is tough sounding too, sure its not a woods cam or s n s cam, or a zipper cam in it, but compared to my last 2 bikes n putting out a humble 117 torque at 3500 rpms that bike is going to be a rocket compared to what Im used to, and have long legs on the freeway the way I had it built for, sound n the freeway, long legs while keeping my factory warranty, I wasn't trying to build a race bike, but wanted a very fun enjoyable bike, where i twist on that throttle n go go go around anyone I want to pass, and find my own solitary piece of the road, but thats me I watch for my own safety hazards, 3 million miles in a semi would kinda qualify me id say

My ex 2000 deuce 88ci that the previous owner turned into an 103 stroker smoked any and all 110 CVO embarrassingly so! Not even close. Like half track. I wish I was knowledgeable in mechanics and could go back in time and watch who ever built that motor. I do have previous owners receipts. Stock dyno was 58hp. After everything the 103 was 119.9hp I wish I’d never sold. When I did sell the stipulation was if he ever sold would be to me. But sadly he passed away and left that rocket to his 18 year old grandson. I’ve tried several times to buy back but no go. Anyway Another great vid! I’m looking currently between the 2009 fire quartz 110 dyna fat Bob and a 2012 plain 103 WG . Common sense should lead me to the 110. But the WG has an amazing custom paint job ( even better looking than the 2009 fire quartz and black which is my fav all time HD paint scheme). I’d prob have to send the WG to Fuel moto and spend $10k to even feel anything like my deuce 103 stroker. I know the 2009 110 cvo would need at least half that much as well if not more to feel like that 2000 stroker. Question , can you make a stroker out of the 2012 103’s? If so you want the job and create me a 130/130 hp and TQ bike? How much would that cost a feller?

Awesome vid. About to buy an '05 FLHCI Road King with the 103. Is this considered a factory upgrade? I suspect dealer-installed as I can't find SE or CVO designated RK's out there for back then. Does the higher output increase the likelihood of spring-tensioner issues? And if I do the hydraulic upgrade, what might you recommend to further upgrade in this 103? Thanks for your expertise!
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
They didn't have a Screamin Eagle Road King in 2005, they had Police Road Kings that could of been equipped with a 95 or 103 but the standard was an 88. It's possible it could of received a stroked crank and 95 cylinders from Harley. You might have a dealer run the VIN, they could tell you if it was converted to a 103 at a dealer. The spring tensioners in those later years were better than 99 to 02 models, but still keep an eye on them. If that bike was converted to a 103 it may of already been updated to hydraulic tensioners.

Ward Cam 255 duration and 63 lift. Stroked and valves ground with 4 angles. Big throttle body and Cam gears. Only 600 mile, so not Dyno yet, but she be fast! 2006 Dyna If I am at a slow roll and open it up, it will lay rubber all the way till shift.

The SE heads are a bit restrictive on that motor, a nice bolt in cam that can handle a mild compression increase and a port job on the heads will make a very nice and reliable engine. At the very least a bolt in cam always bumps a nice power increase.

Supposedly a Rod Length/Stroke ratio of 2:1 is the best, which is why the early Laverda Triples of the 1970's were such beasts. Of the 24 bikes I've had, my 1975 Laverda was my favorite, but I just couldn't get parts for it. Now they're museum pieces, so I settle for a friendlier 1971 BMW R75/5, as the Germans are much more businesslike than the Italians.

I didn't have much money back then, and it was my only wheels. I got a new BMW R80/ST that was fun and reliable, but no ground pounder. Now I'm 70, and don't want a monster. I am restoring my BMW and have enough extra parts to build another whole bike (minus frame and handlebars.) @@GixxerFoo Japanese motorcycles were crap for a long time. In the Sixties they were all junk except for the electrics, which helped for reliability, much to the rue of the Brits. During the Seventies they managed to find some power for their bikes (CB 750 and the Kawi 900) but the handling and brakes were weak, when not deadly. During the EIghties the Brits, Italians and us Yankees fell apart economically, and Japan didn't have to work that hard for our $$, but handling and brakes did improve some. During the Nineties, especially the late Nineties they must have found a crashed flying saucer and stolen the technology! Engine, brakes, handling, and even ergonomics caught up with their already superior electronics, and Japan started making world beaters. @GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 7 месяцев назад
If you can swing it I would upgrade the cam plate to that later style with the hydraulic tensioners and a the high volume oil pump. You can get that through Screamin Eagle or I would recommend checking out Feuling OE+. It's well worth the money and piece of mind. Generally hydraulic tensioners run about 50K before needing replacement and the spring tensioners can make it about 30K miles so you're right in line with the replacement interval. It snow balls when you get in there so while you got it down if you decide to the cam plate upgrade route you can get a complete package with a cam upgrade as well, never hurts to do the whole cam chest while you're there. I would recommend new cam bearings 100% and some lifters while you're there. At a minimum some new spring tensioners and ride on for another 30K miles.

Need to know what would be my best SE piston combination including new pushrod setup?? Thanks David

Feuling cam is much higher lift and it's gonna be noisier, Sportsters with 585 cams sound like a Ducati dry clutch lol. Actually changing your cylinder heads out to the Screamin Eagle Kompressor heads would give you a big compression boost with your stock pistons. But you could go with 10:1 flat top stroker pistons, but likely you'll have to replace cylinders too, depending on the shape they are in.

Quick question. Last year I bought a 2006 Softail Deluxe and absolutely loved it but it doesn't have that much power on the highway.. so yesterday I bought a 2005 Softail Deluxe with 5,000 miles and the Screaming Eagle kit from the 88 to 103. The ride home from South Carolina to North Carolina was 4 hours and I could really feel the extra power on the highway. To be honest I really couldn't feel a whole lot of extra torque taking off on the gears but once I was on the open road that's where I felt it. Now my question is that it came with the same size pipes as my previous Softail Deluxe but it's not as loud at all. Why is the 103 upgrade not as loud as my Vance & Hines pipes

I'm going to look at a 2009 Road King with a 103" in it. Any guesses if this is a kitted 96 or a stock 103?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 года назад
2009 Road King originally came with a 96, unless it's a police model then it would of had the 103 from the factory. If it's a civilian Road King it would be a 103 kit, likely drop on cylinders with a piston kit. So you might ask about what compression ratio pistons they went with and what set of cams are in it. You might get a nice surprise if they went with high compression and high lift cams. If they don't know, you can run a camera down the spark plug holes and look at the top of the pistons. If they are flat it's going to be the lower compression kit, if they have a bowl in the center they are high compression. That's about the most information you can get without opening up the motor. Hopefully they receipts for the work so you know for sure you're getting what you're paying for.

The twin cam is the motor you want for sure. I mean looking back, the 1st generation of any engine from Harley, had issues to iron out. The 1st gen twin cam had some major issues, from scizoring cranks, to the tensioner foot breaking apart, causing plastic shards to lodge into the oil pump, grenading the engine. The last gen evo, was a much better engine than the 1st gen twin cam. Down the road, after its 3rd and 4th generation, those issues were worked out and in the later generations, it becomes a much better engine than the evo, at least as far as a platform ( the evos are still great engines, for both nostalgia and longevity, but for a performance platform, the twin cam I think is more capable, more efficient, and probably has better parts availability, since the evos are pretty old now) , that being said, looking at a 1st generation Milwaukee , I think they have work to do, as there are some issues with it. Do your own research on it. I'm sure the bugs will be worked out, in a second and 3rd generation m8, and by that time I think it may be a better platform for the enthusiast, but I tell everyone right now, to go with a last generation twin cam, it's a great engine, with lots of potential, and has a great parts availability. I do however think that because of how Harley press fits the cranks, that scizoring can still be an issue, but I think it all comes down to how you ride it. That low end torque is available at such low rpm, that many people will lug the engine down low in the revs, which is what really will cause the problem. Keep the engine in its rev range, dont lug it to hard , and scizoring will never be an issue, but these guys riding along at 1500 to 1800 rpm, are really stressing that crank. I had a 2015 softail slim 103, was an amazing bike, and I always kept the engine above 2300 when riding it. You'll get 100k np out of those engines if you are mindful of that. In other words, just because it pulls along nicely at 1500, doesn't mean you should do it, not to mention that you have much better oil flow when keeping them above 2300. Don't lug these engines below there operating ranges, and they are beautiful. The scizoring issue is not a flaw, but more of how people ride. Great video btw. I since sold my softail, picked up a buell xb12s, amazing bike man, so under rated lol. I would love to see a buell build, it's an excellent platform, excellent chassis, with incredible breaks. I'm amazed pulling up to bike meets, and no one knows what it is. They are becoming very rare, and are worth keeping alive. I think Harley mad a bad choice ( just my opinion) discontinuing a sport bike, using the beautiful cave man engine. There is a big market even now, of people who I think would love a modern sport version of a buell with an m8, I really think Harley should get back in the spotlight, and build a sport bike using that engine. Obviously it would be niche, but if they could do it for a good price point, I think it would be a game changer. Excellent video man great build xD

When I was a teenager (in the Sixties, wouldn't trade that era for anything) the word was that Harley would make a bike and use their customers as their R&D department (some would say they still do.) What made that idea stick for me was the belief that if something broke, Harley would just make it bigger (thus stronger.) Of course that would strain other components, which would break, and then be re-engineered bigger. After this cycle was repeated many times, things would balance out, finally, but then it would be outdated and they would start out all over again. When I was riding a Harley (Evolution, of course) everybody called the Shovelhead the "Trouble Head." The service manager at Dud Perkins HD (in SF) would mock Shovelhead riders by glancing down at the bike as often as he looked at the road.

The hydraulic fueling tensioners with the red shoes are really stout, and the 525 cams pull pretty damn good for the 95" motor. Then I use the sns stealth air filter on my 04, and any single bolt cover will work on it. Then if just want a good slip on for the head pipe, cobra is a good way to go, or freedom makes good pipes too that are reasonable.

You can go with a different cam, the stock cam in that bike targets midrange torque. That would be the least expensive route. You could bump the compression with some new pistons but you'll likely need to have the cylinders reworked or replaced

Your Awesome, I had the 2005 FLSTSE or Fatboy CVO. It was impossible to get a straight answer of the origin of the 103cid was it stroked 88 or a new motor that started at 103. Unfortunately I wrecked it and lost it when I used insurance payoff to live and not buying the bike back and repairing it. I now have a similar situation with the 103cid High Output in my 2014 Rushmore StreetGlide Special. As far as what Cams it uses. Are they the CVO253 used in 2003-2006 or are they something else? If you can clear this up for me I would be very Thankful. That was a very good video full of useful information.

The 103HO cam is similar to the SE-255 (.556"lift, 211*/235* intake/exhaust) but it is .511" lift 212*/233* intake exhaust. It's a really decent low speed torque cam.

Is it a custom built engine or a factory SE 103 swapped over? The 103 in 2006 was a 88 with a longer stroke crank, larger cylinder bore with a set of SE heads and bit higher lift cams. The heads really could of been better, they weren't bad but they left a lot of power on the table. Other than those changes you still have the OEM tensioners, cam plate and compensator.

@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 года назад
For the 88 the factory 96 cranks won't work in the cases, those cranks were designed for the late style primary and the crank splines are different. A stock set of 103 jugs will fit on the motor and you could reuse the heads. You'd just have to source a 4-3/8 stroke crank that's made to fit the 88 style cases, that way everything else will go back together.

Ron C I bored my 09 96ci to 103. I was worried about loosing my over bores they said ( basically ) still have 103 over bores so I went with it I didn’t want forged pistons as in my day they needed extra clearance for forged pistons to grow. Ok not now ( hepolite I think ) so I went to 103 over bore .. I asked if I needed the main bearing upgrade they sad no .. ok .. I asked if I needed comp release , no ,,, ok so I went with it. I was going 255. For tq as I ride two up. They said ok but then reneged and said 253e. We chatted about it. I went with them. Ported heads ,10.5/1 comp. and it’s tuff. 102hp 110 tq. Rw ..100 at about 2600 and drops to 100 at 5250 and 90 at 6200... and so far no drarmars ...ok it is dyno’d S&S slip ons and S&S air cleaner. That’s probably 10hp for both. I asked to go 110 at the time but back then they couldn’t get good hp but now it’s different. Hope my upgrade experience helps ... THATS why I can’t justify a M8. 110 tq at3000 rpm.
