I remember this! This was during the writers strike back in '07(?) and they had to come up with ways of continuing on while supporting their writers. BRILLIANT.
I believe of one of the later seasons of the Show Dexter was during the Writer's Strike Which had a lot to do with why the ending was so terrible. (up there with GoT, if not worse)
Two of their shows are (were) actually in the same building, with Conan's being taped a few blocks away. All different stages, but the first transition is realistic.
@@estyak8780 Yes and no, Conan was screwed but he honestly got to do whatever he wanted after. He left knowing he was respected for his decision and everybody knew NBC did him dirty so he found a network that basically allowed him to do anything he wanted. We can watch Jimmy Fallon now and even though he’s very successful, he will never have the charisma and likeness that Conan has. The only loser was NBC.
@@estyak8780 Jay Leno never "screwed Conan". Conan had limited appeal and the few sycophantic followers he had weren't enough to fill the shoes of the #1 TV host in America. Jay was asked to come to back to save the show. Conan was history either way.
@@jeffclement2468 Carson and Letterman were only big because there was nothing else on IMO, people had alternatives by the time Conan and Ferguson were around. It always felt like everyone was obligated to impress Letterman, he wasn't actually that entertaining himself, he is a legend don't get me wrong but he's of his time. And Carson just helped create the format, people remember his regular guests more than him.
1:24 Conan entering from the shadows with his cartoonishly large body/hair/jawline paired with his freakishly tiny mouth/lips, looks like something out of the WWE
They did! 5 of them did a podcast to raise money for those striking. Seth Myers, Stephen Colbert, John Oliver and both Jimmys. It’s called Strike Force Five and episodes 5 has gained a bit of a cult reputation… so go listen.
I like how while they were determined to kick each others ass they still respect the integrity of each person’s job, waiting patiently for each other to wrap their respective taping before the big showdown 😂
Conan would win. Dude's got an obvious reach advantage, he's a clever trickster, and there's the ol' Irish factor -- dude's bred to fight and take a pounding.
@@eldorados_lost_searcher That one shot of Jon punching towards the camera but being too short for the frame, like he can't reach Conan had me dying! 😂😂
This was during the writers' strike. They needed easy material to kill minutes. Even so it was good satire of host-to-host drama that is lost on most viewers these days.
BOTH Network TV and Cable TV suck now, thanks to streaming, internet and cell phone viewing habits. I NO longer watch either, nor the new stuff. Too much politics and repetitive unentertaining crap. Real important workers who contribute to Society should have unions; like restaurant servers, drivers, cleaners and childcare workers.
@@samanthagreen8054 I was talking about how he got sacked out said network lol. Anyways, I don't agree that everything in TV is shit, just that there is more shit available. My understanding is that Conan's staff has stayed with him to any network he goes to, and that says a lot about the integrity of both Coco and his employees. I don't know if they're union or something, but the point is that good people will do good deeds, and they should be in places of power. Of course, being naive and being good are 2 different things.
@@FilipinoBreloom no it didn’t this character was loved until he decided to leave the show and it ended. It wasn’t like it went downhill and got cancelled nobody says that about the Colbert report. If your referring to his late night show that isn’t this character that’s just him trying to interview people because they literally offered him the letterman’s spot out of nowhere and his show was already ending. I don’t know what people wanted him to do refuse it?
I was only 14 when this went down, but I can only imagine how important this was for television audiences. The WGA strike took out production for every prime time show, and this was before the internet became big and streaming services became a thing. Talk shows had to go on but they didn't hire any new writers bc of the strike so a lot of content produced during these couple of months wasn't as structured and a lot more loose. As a result, the strike forced Conan, Colbert, and Jon to create amazing comedy out of nothing. I wish Conan got to do more work w/ Jon and Colbert. He's been on Colbert's show a couple of times and both Jon and Colbert had cameos when Conan visited NYC a decade ago but those guys working in the same city could've produced a good amount of comedy chaos if Conan had never moved to L.A.
This bit and the fact that Jon Oliver was the lone correspondent on the daily show are the two things I remember about this time. Oliver couldn't strike because he was on a worker visa at the time.
Alright.. Dunno who that is. Maybe 'cus I didn't watch much of Conan's talk-show 'cus of how much an agitprop 2 pieces of "Conan Without Borders®" were.
Who else is coming back here in 2023 now that the WGA is striking again in the desperate hope that something as incredible as this will happen once more? I mean, Colbert's going to need to fill time on the Late Show if they come back, and it's not like Conan is that busy aside from his podcast...
Was in high school when this happened, but I wish I was just a little bit older because I didn't appreciate Conan nearly as much as I do now in my 30's.
It only goes to show that the writers are the necessary moderators to prevent excessive violence over trivial matters. With the trouble in Ukraine for no clear reason at all, and diplomacy going nowhere, maybe the late night comedy writers should take a shot? Sorry, bad choice of words.
@@Yngvarfo Totally agree. Knowing that President Zelenskyy started out the same as Jon Stewart and they both share the same Energy, I believe only comedy writers and Musicians have the Truth, Intelligence, Compassion, Empathy, Wisdom & Timing to find themselves with power to change the world. It's that Divine Interaction with something Deeper ♥️
Holy shit this opened up a ton of memories, it's been so long since I've seen this. Every kid who grew up in the new millennium was talking about this. What a time to be alive back then.
However many times I re-view this, I keep getting astounded by the difference in size between Jon and Conan... It's like the Kevin Hart and the Rock...
oh, you're gonna tell me the Anchorman 2 TV network war scene wasn't based off this ?! PFFFT. definitely written & inspired by the same writers FOR SUREEEEEE
There is an outtake of Conan and Colbert singing the national anthem where Conan adlibs a part and Colbert brakes character and looks at the camera, it was so funny, I remember it from when it first aired and I haven’t seen it since. Wish it was posted on RU-vid
@@-Teague- That's a stretch. Nobody said anything about not wanting workers having rights, but when the hosts are arguably better without the writers you start to question what they're actually worth
The entire fight part was great 😆 and then with the dancing together towards the end 😆 fkn love these guys, we’re fortunate to still have them around for a while longer
