This update is much more relevant to BVR combat than this scenario, no one is really going to have the time or SA to get into a notch when being jumped by an active missile at 5NM. The actual significance of this update is in reducing the ability for aircraft to reliably get into a notch in a BVR engagement to defeat the AMRAAM, particularly at high altitudes due to the addition of proper range gating on the missile seeker.

Hey Jack :-) yeah it seems a little too good. We shall have to see after a few days, how difficult it is for people to notch / defend against them after adjusting to it

I play all the time but fly an F16. I create missions and fly single player mostly. I have noticed they notch my missiles far more easier than before. I dont know what they are talking about. Its very obvious to me its easier not harder to notch. I will set up a 4 on one mission, me using 120C's and them only fox2's. I used to be able to kill them all in one try. Not all the time but the majority of the time. Now they notch the crap out of them and I might hit one! Its more exciting cause now I have to merge more often but for them to say its harder to notch just isnt true. At least thats what I have noticed.

2:36 use NWS to step each track in threat priority, then the missiles still get midcourse until active

Nice video, thanks. And good, proper, points you make. I've no idea how true to the real world this performance is but it seems to suit online (melee) combat, if that's your thing. From Wiki (cus it's always correct, right?): A melee or pell-mell is _disorganized_ hand-to-hand combat in battles fought at abnormally close range with _little central control once it starts_. In military aviation, a melee has been defined as "[a]n air battle in which several aircraft, both friend and foe, are _confusingly intermingled_". So, hopefully they don't nerf it if online players complain too much. I wonder how real world aviators treat this functionality? Likely classified information (tactics).

I guess the exact specifics will remain classified into long after the weapon is replaced. I'm not sure though how accurate this is either. In past when I was in such a situation, I would be lucky to get 1 kill, although it was easier to get away (takes most players longer to recognise threat, lock/confirm and shoot) and seeing a bunch of missiles caused them to defend.

As a player, you stated -- i don't care about being killed. That explains everything in a nutshell. You know you can simply jump into another aircraft. In real life, people are worried about being killed. That's why I hate flying on line. attitudes that you don't care about being killed, you just spray a ton of Million Dollar Missiles and so what if I die. They need to give you a time out like fifteen minutes or something because this attitude has to stop.

I mean, why stop at 15 min? If you really want it to be a sim; let’s just make your first death the end. After you die, the game can’t be reloaded.

When you want to create a server, you need to go to great lenghts just to try to stop people from flying these kamikaze missions.. its annoying and on the long run it doesn’t even make them happy.. everybodies their own, I just don’t like it beeing showed down my throat left and right.. Fox3 - I apreciate you making dcs video, but from headline I expected some kind of a test - when its beeing notched, when not.. video from before.. showing difference.. something down that path… Have a nice day! 👍🏻

I was wondering for a long time, what if I chose only Amraam instead of mixing it with Sidewinder? I read over 20 years ago 120 can be used in dogfight, thank you, for first time I could see how could be the work out. With a reported minimum range at quarter of nautical mile, 500 yards, now I'm sure to prefer two tanks and 8 Amraam over 6 Amraam + 2 Sidewinder! Thank you again Bye Freedom everyone

Nothing wrong with using aaraams in dogfight. Just understand that it doesn't have the turning capability of a modern fox-2.

@@ImperiumLibertas thank you now I have seen it simulated, within nowadays BVR preferred engagement I'll drop out the usual two fox-2 WVR missiles backup load-out in favor of all BVR engagement and obviously an emergency fox-3 dogfight eventually! I believe this is the safest solution that let you return to base once you spend all your missiles, instead in a dogfight when you emptied your pylons and try to run away is easy to get a fox-2 or 3 back in your nozzle trashing your plane. Maybe? Minimum range of 500 yards and 40 g I believe is enough even if I know some fox-2 missiles can reach 60 g on turn! At shorter distance up to 500 yards you can use the gun I suppose. Um what? The 120 are much worse after the patch, before that also... have you not noticed the last few days what was going on? Take a look at the forum and see the tests there

They are not good at longer ranges... I was doing some longer range (30-40nm) testing, and it was REALLY bad, so much so I didn't bother continuing the tests, it seemed so broken there was no point. I'm going to look through the posts you suggested and see how my findings compare. In summary though, In close though, these things are way more deadly, and far away, it's as if they just stop working after about 40 seconds

This is called MADDOG, missiles is shot in the visual mode without RADAR lock. That did not change at all from the very beginning of AMRAAM in DCS. Without lock, the missile goes from the rail, starts the radar search and locks the first contact within the radar field of view. Defeat critera concerning notch or other maneuver did not change to any other AMRAAM shot taken. The dashed circle in the HUD represents the AMRAAM Seakerhead field of view. Btw, there is no pitbull mode. It's a NATO brevity code for Air intercept missile (AIM)-120 is at MPRF active range. That is all out of open for public documents. You may start reading ... @@DCSDigitalCombatSimulator Really? Instead of embarrassed silence, that is your answer? A 5 NM look up shot. No awareness on the shooter, hiding behind the mountain. With no reaction time, whatsoever, you have about 7 seconds left, to get below the missile and turn roughly 90 degrees to a perfect notch, employing chaff. That was easy beforehand? It was not, it never has been and hopefully it never will! In fact, it should be close to impossible to defeat such a missile. The problem in DCS right now is, that it is possible for the missile to miss a lot of times and not vice versa. You are undermining all the people trying to get that changed in the right direction. And I`m not even started with your “typical” test scenario. All you have to do is, find a mountain ridge line that is approximately at 5 NM when you need it and some idiots behind it, flying a 7 ship line abreast formation, with zero SA, not caring, what is in front of them. I don’t know which server you are playing on, but that is maybe hard to find, anyhow. I know, your are exaggerating to prove your point but there is none. Bro, you have a good entertainment value, but that’s about it.

Mixed messages here.. the large circle on HUD means the 120s fire off in Pitbull mode (Maddog). It's different from a smaller circle you otherwise see, at BVR ranges when locking someone up, the circle that winds as the distance closes. Here the missile is guided by the aircrafts radar, until it gets in about ten nm. I didn't realise I was so unclear about this, I'll review for future videos, can't be having that. Thanks for feedback

@@DCSDigitalCombatSimulator the circle in the hud indicates optional launch angle relative to the position of the locked target. Meaning the closer the target the larger the circle up to the turning limit of the missle. It has nothing to do with pitbull, maddog, or anything like that. While not locked a large circle shows the max turn the missle can make off the rail. Outside of the circle is low PK unless the target turns into the missle. On the F-16 on the L bracket on the right indicating the launch parameters of the missle there is a small circle indicating when the missle goes pitbull.

@@CaptLawrence Go to forum and look in the weapons bugs section and look for 120. There was enough evidence uploaded that the 120 is absolutely broken and that was also acknowledged. No need for further discussion here. and best BvR weapon... SD10 is much better in bvr for some time...

This is a point that someone raises from time to time, and you're right... I'll address it again, which is that for every 1 person calling it F/A-18, you have 10 people calling it the F-18, including the pilots who fly the thing
