And if we did not have flood defenses for the open sea, we would be underwater from surges every single storm, let alone a hurricane. But in Florida even the natural flood defenses (elevated dune lines) are completely built up with houses. Now that really IS madness. Is there no one in charge there when it comes to where to build and where to not build?
@queenbee9505
@queenbee9505 Год назад
@@Lylith909 Operative word here is OCEAN. The Netherlands is not subject to an ocean but to an inland sea and the North sea. With so many canals/polders and pumps created to pump out these 2 great Seas, yes the Netherlands in a great place but will not be as the Seas continue to rise. Because those pumps cannot keep out the inexorable amount of water , forever. The OCEAN is not the same as a sea or outlets to the sea. Most houses in the Netherlands are made of either brick or concrete or a type of plaster. Wood is quite scarce and so most homes are not wood My last husband was Dutch and so we both lived in The Netherlands and returned for visits almost yearly. It took centuries for the Dutch to get to the point of keeping water out and modern pump creation began in 1916. The US is much larger than Holland and one cannot fight the ocean as well as lakes, rivers, because one cannot control how much water enters via uncontrollable routes. Holland pumps water back out, where does one pump the ocean? Holland is a very small country and is about 1/3 the size of New York state. It has 3 to 5 major rivers that flow through it. Logistically, the US is in a very different position. It is easier to pump out water flowing THROUGH a relatively small area than to pump out the ocean. Finally. ow many Hurricanes does Holland experience yearly thst could utterly destroy/overwhelm any flood or pump system in minutes?
@dirk7816
@dirk7816 Год назад
This is tragic but get used to it. 20,000 years ago during the last Glacial Maximum Florida was more the twice the size it is now. By the end of this century 70% of whats left will be a sandbar at low tide. To continue to throw Trillions into this State over the next few decades it has left is ludicrous. We should be talking about relocating from lands that will soon be no longer viable for human habitation and not pretending like this is something we can just repair our way through.

What is it that strengthens a hurricane from category 3 to category 4? A large part of the story is the warmer water that provides energy to the storm. Warmer water on both land and sea is a feature of a warming planet. Actual, real-life measurements based on both land- and satellite-based instruments taken over many decades now show a decade by decade trend in rising global average temperatures. So the TREND, on average, would be a higher probability of extreme weather events. A shorthand summary would go something like this: It’s pretty simple. A warming planet causes WORSE WEATHER EXTREMES: … Warmer air & water => (leading to) more humidity, heavier rain, and heavier floods. Hotter air & topsoil => more heatwaves, more evaporation, more drought, and more wildfires. Hotter Arctic => less ice, less albedo (reflectivity), much less ice. That's the way it works. It is simple physics. The evidence can be seen worldwide. Expect more of the same, only worse. To be clear, climate change is not just about what is happening to hurricanes. There we see a lot of variability in strength and frequency year to year and decade to decade. It's more about the increasing frequency and average strength of all kinds of extreme weather going forward, and that's largely determined by increasing average temperatures as explained in the summary.
@3DSAILOR
@3DSAILOR Год назад
“[No,] there aren’t more powerful hurricanes either. The frequency Category 3 and above hurricanes making landfall since 1900 is also trending slightly down,” Lomborg writes. “A July Nature paper finds that the increases in strong hurricanes you’ve heard so much about are ‘not part of a century-scale increase, but a recovery from a deep minimum in the 1960s-1980s.’” Despite what you may have heard, climate change is not actually causing more hurricanes. Hurricane activity has actually been decreasing slightly since 1900. Chris Landsea, tropical analysis forecast branch leader at the National Hurricane Center, said global warming likely added about 1 percent more power to Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 hurricane. That translated to 1 or 2 mph. "That is a fairly small increase and most of the computer guidance by global warming models say maybe we could see 3 percent stronger by the end of the century," said Landsea, speaking during a session on hurricane history in 2019. "That's really not very much." So, it's not pretty simple. It's quite complicated and the sky is not falling.
@RussCR5187
@RussCR5187 Год назад
@@3DSAILOR Thanks for the information. I agree. As I said, there's a lot of variability in hurricane statistics, so climate change is not all about what happens to hurricanes. But the application of elementary physics to soil, air, water, and ice IS quite simple. Everyone knows that warmer water evaporates faster. Ice in a warmer environment melts faster. And everyone SHOULD know that the average global temperature HAS in fact been rising. My comment is about what exists, not what is projected or predicted. On average and over time we should be expecting an increase in damaging extreme weather events.

@The Richest Man In Babylon What happened prior to about 11,000 years ago is interesting but largely irrelevant to the situation we have today. That's when the practice of agriculture began and humans were able to establish permanent settlements. Advances in technology have also allowed settlement in regions that are marginally habitable (hot, dry, etc.). As the unbalancing of the climate becomes greater and greater, some of those regions will become even less habitable and masses of people will have to migrate elsewhere. This happened in Syria several years ago. A prolonged drought destroyed their subsistence farming. It is also starting to happen as fish stocks get depleted in regions where livelihoods depend on fishing. What happens in the affected regions will never stay in the affected regions. Trouble migrates along with the masses.
