What a 72 hours on the Tua Tagovailoa front. CBS Sports reported on Friday that Tagovailoa missed most of the voluntary offseason workouts, ESPN reported that Miami had made at least one offer to Tagovailoa that was not accepted and then The Athletic reported this morning that Tagovailoa was in the building today for the official start of OTAs. All of that, plus some insight from NFL super agent Drew Rosenhaus, today on Locked On Dolphins.

Hi Kyle, I don’t usually comment on peoples podcast because I feel like sometimes they don’t do a very good job. You’ve done a very good job. I can’t understand you very well. I’ve been a fan since 1972 and that was with my dad and he took the Cowboys. I took the Dolphins and of course my team won so every since then I was a Dolphins fan. I really appreciate what you and Travis Wingfield have done to listen to the show that Travis did with OJ McDuffie and I think Joe Rose I like what you say and it helps me to understand the contract situation. A lot of these podcasts don’t know that just another way of saying thanks for all your hard work and let you know that people do listen and people do care.

Kyle, thanks for clearing some of this up and putting it into context, I've been hearing the rumors but waiting for your podcast to set matters current and straight. It's time for negotiations to proceed in earnest, and the resolution will take work. I'm stoked he was throwing to Malik Washington!

Kyle, Thanks. A lot of hub bub about an ongoing situation. But I am an ALMOST every dayer so I see the context. As long as Mike is informed and giving the thumbs up, I’m good. My only thought is we’ve now seen Tua for 4 years. Has he EVER been the guy that bails on his team or teammates? Standup guy should be able to count on SOME of the good will he’s generated over the years.

I am fairly new to your Podcast. However I will say that I can understand everything you say and that you seem to be object. I happen to like Tua. Personally I think he is trying to get back to the QB he was at Alabama. In regards to your Podcast, I like what I have heard so far. I am a Miami Dolphins fan as a whole team. Hopping we can do good this year. PhinsUp Forever and Always ❤️❤️🏈🏈🐬🐬🐬

I am always am worried when Grier' conducts these prolonged "contract negotiations". Whenever Grier tries to look smart, he actually looks stupid. Case in point is how he conducted the Christian Wilkins negotiations. He could have got it done way cheaper when CW was in his 4th year but Grier kept on delaying it saying he needs to see more since CW asked for a top 5 DT contract (at that time). The more Grier delayed the more expensive the DT market became. Even though CW was a leader and kept playing through all the opt-ins through the negotiations. Till finally Grier caved and said the numbers just didn't fit. Bye bye. Another example was how Grier immediately caved in to Xavien Howard after Grier gave CB Jones top CB contract. This was done after Howard just signed a top CB contract a year ago and didn't want Jones to be above him. So I feel anytime there are prolonged negotiations, we should prepare for the worst. If there are contracts to be done it will get done quickly just like Howard, Jalen Ramsey, Chubb, and others. Especially now there are rumors being leaked (just like with CW) that Grier wants Tua's health and availability to be covered as bonuses or game day checks. Kinda trying to look smart and bucking the trend given to most QBs. This really irks me because Tua has always done offseason training to get his body prepared and guarded against injuries, has a stable family so he can do film study, and doesn't deal with masseuse. This is also coming from Grier who doesn't have the same worries as us fans about the condition of the OL to protect Tua, and hasn't done a single selection to upgrade the OL with immediate impact players in a draft loaded with talent. Why should Tua bear the responsibility in a game that has injuries at any time and hasn't sufficiently ensured Tua's protection? Meanwhile, Tua just continues to be the leader (just like CW) and play. Just continue to delay this while the QB market continues to rise. I pray that Tua's agent doesn't fall for this and Tua's success in the future.

Wait I make all kind of trades in Madden! Some ppl think it is just that easy to find a QB like Tua, and then to simply replace a QB like Tua. This isnt a Dolphin fan base thing. This is a football fan thing.

I honestly don't see the rush in doing this contract. I can name 1 good reason why we should do it, and at least 5 reasons why we shouldn't. Why can't we non exclusive franchise tag him next year to see what his value is across the league, while also giving us another year to see if he can stay healthy and improve on the last 2 years? The non exclusive tag would give us the opportunity to match any offer he gets. Tua isn't the only guy up for a big deal either, with all the 1 year deals and positions we're gonna have to fill next year on an older roster and future dead cap hits with all the cap manipulation we've done to build this team. If Tua can't lead this talented of a team to a division title or playoff win in 3 years, what's the upside of paying him a large, long term contract going to accomplish? He's a solid qb with legit concerns that matter when you have to pay him a substantial amount of money while still trying to build a better team around him. Alot of fans think he doesn't have enough around him now, how will it be better when he's paid like an elite qb? I love the Miami Dolphins, I love all of our players, but I'm not loyal to them like I am the team. If we can sign him and not cripple our ability to move off him in 2 years, then my concern level goes down, but I've been hearing 180 million guaranteed, that's ludacris

The tag next year is projected to be 42.47M. Are you prepared (and is the team willing) to absorb that non-flexible cap hit for 2025? Genuine question, just pointing out the biggest barrier to your proposed pathway
@Ballaholic17
@Ballaholic17 13 дней назад
@LockedOnDolphins That's the 1 reason I think signing him now would benefit the team. That's also assuming he stays healthy again and improves on the last 2 years. I'm not taking the decision lightly, it is tough, but if I'm weighing all the pros and cons, waiting 1 more year, while acknowledging it will likely cost more, might be the best option. I just feel like the flip side is if things don't change, Tua doesn't stay healthy again or the season flops, it limits our flexibility find another qb, sign our other impending free agents and putting a better roster around Tua moving forward. I also believe Tua is unique, I don't know if he will command a Hurts, Herbert, Goff or Burrow type deal on the open market, maybe he does, but are we ready to make that assumption right now? I just think a top 5ish qb contract is overpaying at this point based on injury history, physical limitations, and overall production. I want to be clear, I'm not saying he's a bad player.

So, you were pointed out the one major reason why to sign him now (which is a reality) and yet you still lean towards the 5 other reasons which may or may not come true (health and he can't lead us to Division title / SB). Let me give you another one : Tua gives us a chance to win. Even Herbert was signed already and what Division Title has he brought? Just take a look at other teams who don't have their QB and are still scrambling to find one. Look no further than Pats and Jets. Or would you rather pay a old vet QB like the Jets or the Falcons. The Lions just paid their QB who was deemed a failure at 2 different teams. He has about the same question marks as Tua. You worry about what you have and fail to realize what you don't have. I don't envy what the Browns have at QB when they fully guaranteed their QB.

The cost goes up. A top 5 contract today becomes an average contract in 2 years. I agree that 180 million guaranteed is probably too much and I’d like to see no more than 120 guaranteed. I’d suggest that the investment need is more in the offensive line. The high cost contracts on this team have a life span and each high cost contract we pay for should line up with an expiring long term contract. X is gone and Armstead will be likely gone next year. For better or worse, the other bigger contacts (Christian and Hunt) were avoided. In 2 years, when the higher costs kick in, Tyreek and Ramsey will be leaving. The costs today are the price of doing business successfully. I’m not happy that Christian left, because rewarding him with a good contract is recognizing what he brought to the team in intangibles - commitment, leadership and accountability. I wanted the Dolphins to reward that, sending a good message to the rest of the team. But the Raiders were willing to significantly overpay for what I think that performance is worth. I hope the other players recognize that the Dolphins are relatively fair, and the next player in that assessment is Tua. Screw him over, a guy who is a leader, a great citizen, and someone who works hard for the team and I think it sends a bad message. We’ll see.

I'm not totally sold on Tua, but he has gotten us leads against Buffalo and Tennessee late in the year only to have the defense flounder and he has come up short as well as drops and fumbles. All that to say it is a team problem. People need to look at the whole picture.
@Ballaholic17

Actually the defense scored 7 points, they got a fumble inside the Titans 10 and the Titans muffed a punt inside their own 20 late in the game that led to 21 of the 27 points we scored that night. I do agree the defense blew that game in the end, but the offense did not play well at all. Against Buffalo, the defense had 2 ints and a fumble recovery, held buffalo to 14 points plus the punt return that sealed the game for the Bills, but the offense scored 14.
