La Toya Yvonne Jackson (born May 29, 1956) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, businesswoman and television personality. The fifth and middle child of the Jackson family, Jackson first gained recognition on the family's variety television series, The Jacksons, on CBS between 1976 and 1977. Thereafter, she saw success as a solo recording artist under multiple record labels in the 1980s and 1990s, including Polydor, Sony Music and RCA, where she released nine studio albums over the course of fifteen years. Her most successful releases in the United States were her self-titled debut album (1980) and the 1984 single "Heart Don't Lie". Jackson's other songs include "If You Feel the Funk", "Bet'cha Gonna Need My Lovin'", "Hot Potato", "You're Gonna Get Rocked!" and "Sexbox". Another one of Jackson's songs, "Just Say No" from her fifth album was composed for US first lady Nancy Reagan and Reagan administration's anti-drug campaign.
Jackson posed for Playboy magazine in 1989 and again in 1991 to promote her New York Times Best Seller La Toya: Growing Up in the Jackson Family. In 1992, Jackson signed a contract with the Moulin Rouge to star in the successful Paris revue, Formidable. Despite subsequent musical success, Jackson's recording career began its decline in the 1990s as a result of her controversial marriage to entertainment manager Jack Gordon, whom she divorced in 1997. After a period of public seclusion, she returned to the music industry in 2004 with the singles "Just Wanna Dance", "Home" and "Free the World", which saw success on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in the United States. In 2011, she was a contestant on the fourth installment of The Celebrity Apprentice and released an extended play, Starting Over, which is her most recent release to date. From 2013 to 2014, Jackson appeared in her own reality television series on the Oprah Winfrey Network, Life with La Toya, which aired for two seasons.

The right producers can work. It worked for Janet. Look at her first 2 albums. She didn’t break out until she hooked up with Jam and Lewis on her third album, Control. They changed her songs, style, persona and the trajectory of her career. Also look at how it worked for Britney Spears.

Impress After Janets 1st 2 Albums Failed, She Got With Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis & The Rest Is History. Latoya Could of Had a Better Shot With Working With Someone Like Jam & Lewis, But She Got With Foreign Producers Who Didn’t Know Her Strengths & Weaknesses. But Jam & Lewis Worked With Janet 2 Study Her Strengths & Weaknesses. They Knew Janet Wasn’t a Very Powerful Singer, So They Build Around Her, Mold Her & Made Her Into a Legend That She Currently Is Today.

Though clearly no Michael or Janet she does have talent, but not trying to be "like" her brothers or little sister. Had she been properly produced and not pimped out things would have been better. This music is "awful" and bland - for Jackson standards - they perform to perfection. This is a sad, abused and confused women. Thank goodness she was able to go back home and that awful abusive so-called "husband" died. She was under deep programming / mind control during this time - saying she hated her family while pimping the family name. 🤔
@fostermac7170
@fostermac7170 4 года назад
She could have relied upon her brothers (Randy, for sure) to produce her. Let her father manage her. Despite what the internet thinks of him, he successfully launched everybody else in the family.
@CG-gp2gc
@CG-gp2gc 4 года назад
@@fostermac7170 I agree. The WHOLE family is mega talented! They ALL write, play instruments and produce but Marlon is the better dancer, yes than Michael and he choreographs their shows and Randy plays multiple instruments and designed the theme for their Victory tour. Tito and Jermaine have been playing their instruments - guitar, bass and percussion's and Jackie as the older brother besides dancing and harmonizing kept things together on the road along with their father. People like to hate but there would be no "Jackson's" without Father Joe and Mother Katherine. But this "crazy" world ALWAYS tries to separate families and demonizes a father. Look at the fathers on TV now-a-days? Michael didn't become obviously dysfunctional UNTIL he was separated from his family. Michael was surrounded by parasites that just used him and sadly the same thing happened to LaToya, but she did survive and is now back to her sweetness. Plus I think the man she has now is good for her!

@@jamsng Michael may have been able to do the moves well, but Marlon created the moves. The little twist of the raise knee and other signature moves were created by Marlon. Michael said that a million times. He always credited his brother. People just ignored it. Other moves he got from James Brown and Gene Kelly, the spin and hop up on toes move he got from Jackie Wilson. The back slide move he got from the pop lock street dancers, it didn’t have an official name, Michael said in an interview When he saw it, it made him think of walking on the moon and the media ran with it calling it the moon walk. Michael whenever he was asked about his dancing, he ALWAYS, ALWAYS gave credit to those he got his moves and style from. That is one of the things I loved about him. He took their moves and did them with his finesse. And he NEVER ever tried to claim something that wasn’t originally his. I will always admire him for that. Today people steal other people’s creativity and act like they created it. They do not acknowledge, give credit or props.

the choreography, sound and glitz isn't there like an MJ or J show, but she certainly seems to be enjoying herself and is sincerely giving it everything she's got. A few drinks in and this would have been a fabulous show.

Why didn't MJ or Janet help her craft a better song that suits her style of singing? I mean she still managed to be famous cuz of her name family and look but I think she could have made it bigger as a musical artist if someone helped her and Janet and MJ didn't want to do that. Her older sister has a better catchy fun song Centipede yet no one knows of that older sister as much as u do LaToya.

MJ tried. He wrote a song for her called "if you feel the funk" for her in 1979 or 1980. LaToya has... "limited" talent, so she could only go so far.

Janet and Michael did not write many of the songs they sung. Like Whitney. They may have written one or two here and there or collaborated but back in those days, there were song writers and producers who put everything together and the singers just went in and sang the song as written or told. They could tweak or change a thing or to but it was basically, just go in a sing. Check the credits on all the songs. I had every Jackson 5 album, Jacksons album, Maureens album, Michael, Marlon, Jackie’s, Janet and Tito’s, Jermaine’s and even Latoyas albums. I didn’t have one by Randy. Btw Jermaine really could sing and his albums were good, too bad, he was just overshadowed. I loved his Tickle your Fancy album. I still play it.

@Diamon. You’re right about Janet. She always had new and innovative dance moves and fresh new material. She also had good management. That’s why I liked her earlier music. LaToya, although having a few good songs between 1980-1982, just didn’t have that true musical talent. I believe that she would have benefited from another profession, such as becoming a doctor or lawyer. LaToya did a lot of things that made people scoff at her, such as posing for PlayBoy, pretending to be psychic, and airing out her dirty laundry on TV, which hurt her singing career too. She might have been a nice person; however, her public appeal was severely curtailed by this type of stuff, and you need a public appeal to sell records.

Latoya couldn’t cut out what she wanted to be. Being MJ and JJ sister those that managed her career tried to put her and even Rebbie in the same league, NOT! All their voices were soft and they need heavy production and music to carry them. MJ was the real singer in the clan with Jermaine right behind him. In this business of show it’s about money and if one doesn’t have a strong something they will get pushed out there being someone they’re not.
@Oxygen257
@Oxygen257 3 года назад
She actually didn’t want to entertain, she wanted to go to law school which her father nixed and forced her to go into the family business. Everything was decided for her. And yes, Jermaine could really sing. He was a better singer than Michael. He had a greater vocal range from falsetto to baritone. He rarely sang in his lower registers. But in his song, “Uh Uh, I Didn’t Do It” he showcases his range from falsetto sounding like Prince and drops to tenor and then gets funky in his baritone sounding like Johnny Gill. But he mainly sang in his tenor voice. He may have used these other voice ranges in other songs, but that was the only one I can think of right now. He was highly underrated and unfortunately in Michael’s shadow because people kept doing what we are doing, comparing and going by popularity. Once I Put that he was Michaels brother out of my head and just LISTENED to his music, technically, vocally and critically, I realized his talent, like wow, this guy is really good. I still play his Let Me Tickle Your Fancy album. I love it. He was also a good bass player and a better song writer too.

I appreciate this video and I do have a measure of respect for her. But, let’s be honest…LaToya can’t sing or dance. However, she kept trying by releasing album after album and going on tour. If for nothing else, I admire her tenacity, as takes a real woman to keep releasing music that she knows is bull$hit and that no one (except for a few people) will buy.
