Great too see again the town in which I spent part of my childhood. We were told as kids, at St Stephens' school, that the priory was home to the lepers of the area -- good to see it taken care of, it was a pile of fascinating old stones when I used to explore it. AND the railway was rebuilt? Fantastic!
Hi! Glad to bring back some memories. The leper colony was at St Leaonards near Polson, which is a mile or two further down the river Kensey. But it does seem it was originally on or near the site of the priory. There is also a window in the church known as the lepers squint which is thought to have been used by lepers to watch mass from outside. There is some debate over that though, as some say the lepers wouldn’t have been allowed to leave their colony. I also remember the priory ruins as a jumbled pile of stones, as a kid. The railway isn’t connected to the network sadly. It’s a narrow gauge track that heads out for about 3 miles towards Egloskerry, and they run a couple of old steam engines that were rescued from quarries in Wales. It’s goes through lovely countryside. It’s been running since sometime in the 80’s and they also upkeep many of the old railway buildings. Thanks for watching 👍🏼
did the town some justice. Launceston big prominent town in the old ages, you can tell by the church, and it had it's own MP, so quite a lot of people came from Launceston back in the day.
I actually live in Launceston, Tasmania! It was great seeing the other Launceston of the world. Our city is nowhere near as old but it is still the third oldest city in Australia! We actually have a building called Cornwall square! What is the population of your town? Ours is about 90,000. We have a tamar river aswell! Would love to see more of these! Subscribed!
spuddie200 thanks for your comment . If I remember rightly, your Launceston was named by its first mayor, who originated from my Launceston. I’m not entirely sure of the population here, certainly a lot smaller. To make an educated guess I’d say around 15’000. I do plan on more local vids, but been a bit busy with grown up stuff recently. Appreciate the sub, cheers! Jeff.
I plan to get there one day. I'm from New Zealand but says in my family history that the last Adams to live in England before coming to New Zealand was baptised in the Mary Magdalene, Wesleyan Chapel, Launceston, Cornwall 1821.
13:49 I was gonna say. the clocks on St Mary's could do with a make over.. when i visited Launceston for the first time around 18 years ago.. the clocks was nowhere in the same condition as they are now... Lets hope it doesn't end up the same way as flexbury park Methodist church did where that had to close permanently due to structural problems...
