Here in Nova Scotia, we’re lucky to have one of Earth’s greatest renewable energy resources in our own backyard. The greatest tides in the world occur in the Bay of Fundy with a range of up to 50 feet
Cape Sharp Tidal partners Emera and OpenHydro, are a green energy leader and an innovative technology are collaborating to solve some of the most pressing challenges of a changing climate-the pursuit of a greener megawatt. Later this summer, they will deploy the second turbine-and once connected to the Nova Scotia power grid, the complete array will be the largest capacity grid-connected in-stream tidal array in the world. This turbine was launched on June 13 2016 at Aecon Atlantic Shipyard in Pictou, Nova Scotia, CA.

It's taken almost half a century for this to get started. The oceans are the only source of renewable energy with the potential to power the world, about time! Thanks to all concerned.

Welp, we were clickbaited. I expected to see it in action due to the title but this is still pretty interesting to see. I never knew these existed! 😊

Very nice opening shot camera pan, to suspensefully give a relative size perception when the ginormous turbine comes into view. 👍

That's an OpenHydro turbine. If I had enough capital I would install many of them to Bosphorus Strait in Istanbul, which has a 5GW current energy potential.

5GW? You could power the whole Middle East with that!

Ffs, to all those antagonists bunging on about fish kills, (1) these things turn so slowly with the gaps between blades that most fish near them or travelling through wouldvl escape unharmed. (2) The blade edges are not sharp (3) some small number of damaged fish is nothing compared to the daily waste any fishing trawler produces. (4) One or 10 or even 50 of such turbines would interfere with such a small area of the Bay's total water flow. (5) There is now a design movement to put conical mesh fish diverters before the blades. Such a non issue. Probably vegans, all these anti turbine people, but great lovers and users of domestic energy from all sorts of other sources which kill far more animals and humans than underwater turbines.

So how much did it cost? How many homes does it supply power to? Cost per Kilowatt? Didn't the first set of blades fail?

generating 2 000 000 watts is 2000 1000watt grow lights. just what i need for my indoor garden. roughly i could grow 2000kgs of weed every 3 months selling at 5000kg is 10 million every 3 months . How much does 1 of these cost.

Great machine! Great comments too! Fish grinder,... too funny! But seriously this thing should make some serious power for a few hours, four times a day, forever. Don't want to be the guy who has to grease the bearings though.

Here is the response from Cape Sharp Tidal's website on that question. No, that’s not its purpose, but fish and mammals will be able to swim through the 4.5-metre centre. Efficiency and safety are the reasons for the open-centre of the turbine design. During this demonstration phase, we’ll be studying how fish and marine life respond to the turbine. In other OpenHydro projects around the world, there is no evidence of any collisions between fish, mammals or seabirds and the turbine and no other negative effects on marine species. Even with those early indicators, we need to do our own research in the unique environment of the Bay of Fundy. When the turbines go in the water, we can advance our understanding with sound scientific data.

2 MW? That's it?
@Sara-L
@Sara-L 6 лет назад
What do you mean, "That's it?" Projects start out small and can scale up if needed. The world's first commercial-scale tidal turbine was commissioned in Northern Ireland's Strangford Lough in July 2008. The 1.2MW SeaGen project was developed by Marine Current Turbines (MCT). The project, comprising of two 600KW turbines, required a total investment of £12m. The project reached an important milestone in September 2012 by producing up to 5GWh of power since its commissioning. This is equal to the power required by 1,500 households annually. The milestone indicates the completion of the demonstration phase of the project.

no thats not it, its the nameplate theoretical capacity which is rarely if ever reached and then only for short periods. Solar and wind typically produce about 30-40% of the theoretical maximum, I dont expect tidal power is much more exciting, but perhaps more predictable. 2MW output, so theoretically 48MWh delivered over 24 hours, reality will be much less.

In spite of Big Oil and the Saudi influence of cutting oil prices by half to thwart these kinds of clean renewables efforts world wide, Canadians choose to live better electrically, and avoid Oil, Diesel, Gasoline, as they are all extreme carcinogens and may cause Global Warming.
